No missing the game is not unusual if you're playing Normal and you're modestly skilled at shmups. "Normal" is tuned to be challenging if you're a beginner at shmups and have no idea what you're doing. Because bombing refills your shield in Normal, you're never at risk of dying unless you run out of bombs, which itself is hard to do. It's basically there for non shmuppers who pick up the game in Steam so they're not daunted by the difficulty.

Hard is where the real game's at. You can't refill your shield by bombing, and it's possible to beat it without ever getting an extend if you don't use the boost mode to score. It's the true "Normal" mode with the others essentially being Easy and Very Easy.

Inferno is wildly on the opposite end with the central gimmick being hilariously unforgiving to the point it frankly sucks to play. There's like no margin for error, and you have to follow incredibly strict routing.

Also, disable the shot type toggle; it sucks. You can change it in options to behave more like a Cave or Touhou game where you hold a button to instantly slow down and focus fire.

Sagaia for GB conquered!

Post by lpslucasps »

I 1CC'd Sagaia for the Game Boy this time around. It's an OK portable shmup. I like the aesthetic and sound, and the bosses are cool. The levels could be shorter though, and the game as a whole is on the longer side - my 1CC clocked at around 40 minutes.

Finally managed to clear Espgaluda. Actually I bought this when it first came out in PS2 nearly 20 years ago, back then I was truly terrible at this genre and I couldn't make it very far. It was in fact perhaps only the 2nd Cave title I ever played.

Fast forward to today and after much practice I was able to beat this in a few days. I love the late 90s/early 00s vibe the game exudes, particularly the OST and stage 3's track. Such a shame it's not more readily available for modern platforms, I understand Espgaluda II is the hardcore gamer's choice but still, I'd love to see what a company like M2 could do with the first title.

Nice!! Clearing Espgaluda is a great one to have under your belt. The final boss is a serious challenge and iconic as far as bullet hell bosses go. The whole OST is pretty killer, but the stage 4 song in particular is one of my favorite shmup songs ever.

From what I can gather, the first game is held in a bit higher esteem than the second one. I do like Espgaluda II quite a bit (Stage 2 mid boss guy with the big gun and the exaggerated death scream is super awesome), but CAVE was developing it as if it was going to be their last title. They really pushed the difficulty in it so players would have something to strive for. I don't think that was neccisarily the best call, considering the first Espgaluda was designed to attract a wider audience. The same thing happened with SDOJ where it was probably tuned a little too difficult as a final send off, but coming off the heels of the much more casual friendly Daifukkatsu, it probably shouldn't have been quite so brutal.

Thank you! I do agree with your assessment on Cave's stance towards the changes in difficulty level for Espgaluda II and later titles. And that over the top mid boss in stage 2 is hilarious! I've been playing it quite a bit these days in parallel to Espgaluda and the difficulty gap is very noticeable, I barely make it to stage 4 before getting summarily toasted by just about anything. I like the game and playing the remastered version is a treat but it's definitely not very welcoming, can't help but think a modern version of Espgaluda (or at least include it in the package with the second title) would have made this remastered release an even bigger hit.

Scratched one off of the shmup bucket list with Super Star Soldier. Did it with authority as it was my first 1LC. Kind of have to do that as it has some rough Gradius Syndrome. This game has sentimental value for me as it is one of the first games to get me into the shmup genre so it was nice to get the clear on this one.

This game is not particularly hard overall, but there are some specific gotcha moments that are consistent run killers. That 4th stage boss was a serious thorn in my side.

Depends on your definition. The co-author of the wiki ST, Bamd, has 14.24. It's absolutely the best non-MAME score though.

Darius II - Mega Drive

Post by lpslucasps »

So, I just 1CC'd Darius II... for Mega Drive. It's more of an "adaptation" than a straight up port, with a lot of notable differences beyond the visuals and sound. It even has a exclusive boss on Stage X! A cool shmup and a good Darius game.

Super solid game, that. Congrats! Image
lpslucasps wrote: Tue Oct 08, 2024 1:48 am Another 1CC! This time it's for Sagaia, the international version of Darius II. It's a significantly different game, in a good way. It's almost a mix of an arrange and turbo mode, with shorter but harder stages and bosses with less HP. It's a bit easier, but it's still Darius-level bullshit.

I was browsing the ol' game list last night - in one of those unfulfilling small-hours moments - and casually 1LC'd the unreleased prototype of Viewpoint 2064.

Not much of an achievement mind, it's piss easy under default conditions - shield bar's so big you have to really put in effort to die before the last boss. Doesn't hold a candle to something like Star Fox or Sin and Punishment in terms of presentation, but an unusual mix-match of STG tradition with Panzer Dragoon lock-play.

A neat curio nevertheless; complete enough to fool a casual onlooker into thinking it's a legit game. All the bosses work, with some pretty cool giant mechabug designs in there - it even has animated space melodrama that plays out between the ship and Alien Eyeball Friend during inter-stage cutscenes.

Complete, that is, until you defeat the last boss - a nicely rendered if unchallenging Hibachi-a-like - and it crashes to a black screen  makes you wonder what happened, since it really only needed some balancing, enemy wave sequencing tweaks, and an ending cutscene to be considered shippable.

Got the clear at Progear (US version) after going at it for the past 1 week. Amazing game, super addictive gameplay, it took me quite some time to get used to the "jewelling" system but once you get the hang of it, the game is very difficult to put down. Very scrubby 1cc though, didn't even make it to the 11 million points mark before killing the final boss. I may try to improve the score during this month, before moving to DDP DOJ BL for the next 1cc attempt on a Cave title.

R-Type II World version 2-ALL
IMO first loop is not too hard because World version have different enemy spawn arrangement and some of the zakos coming from behind got removed, 2nd loop feels like a real difficulty. I got the first loop clear with just full run only attempts that shows how manageable 1-ALL is in this version.

I was originally trying to 2-ALL through Dimensions EX port because it used World ROM as a basis, turns out it's inaccurate as fuck and some of the strats people commonly used in arcade OG it will straight up don't work in Dimensions you have to approach it in different way. Take this one for example the force didn't block that specific bullet and it makes stage 2 way harder than it is, another one is the rotating pipes in stage 5 boss have different arrangement than OG, there's no option to practice loop 2 as well. I strongly suggest to avoid this port for serious play but even then the port still have neat things like real-time switch between 3D remake graphics and the OG 2D pixelart during gameplay, and infinite mode good enough for shmup tourist.

Next up is to play and learn the real Japan version and I'm ready for the pain.

Congrats! Fine cross-regional reconnaissance as always. Image Interested to hear what you think of World after you've nailed the JP 2-ALL.

I've 1cc Psyvariar Revision on Psyvariar Delta (using full Revision settings) yesterday

No Gluon, ended on 5-A, score was pathetic. But I was going for a "Just for fun" run in a break from work, didn't expect to beat the game but did it. Well, sort of.

I've beaten Medium Unit destroying Gluon, but Revision is a whole different beast.

Dimensions is an odd version of R-Type, especially if you have the original on hand to boot up and compare. Like they ported it by hand instead of gussying up an emulation layer, but weren't quite obsessive enough to reproduce the movement and collision quirks 1:1.

As a result, it passes muster, but induces a lingering feeling that everything has - metaphorically - been moved two inches to the left. Nice features, though.

Super Darius II

Post by lpslucasps »

It took me way longer than I wanted or expected, but I've finally 1CC'd Super Darius II, the port of Darius II for the PC Engine CD. This is pretty much a new game, with completely different levels, exclusive new bosses and a remade soundtrack with digital instruments. An ambitious project, albeit not very good. Interesting nonetheless.

This is one of the most demanding clear I've ever done so far, can't be helped since it was released in 1989 a.k.a the year of ultra hard shmups (together with Gradius III Arcade, Same3!/Fire Shark, Darius II etc.)

The japanese version is notorious with it's high difficulty and you get fewer red powerups/DNA shot, they didn't spawn until stage 5 and 6 and all other weapons is very bad in comparison which is why I didn't change my shot. Unlike the first game where 2nd loop got some minimal change, this one is all over the place. The fishes in 2-2 moves at 2x speed when getting shot while firing bullets, 2-3 battleships and 2-5 crawlers/bydo mechas fires twice as much and 2-6 is a true nerve check. You're probably need 2 autofire buttons 15hz for stages and 30hz for boss speedkills because nearly everything in the loops have double the HP.

I got it live on stream after like, more or less 60 hours of playtime. If not for other existing, excellent replays by saucykobold jaimers etc I would've gone nuts routing loop 2

1989 STRONG. Image Like watching a surgeon disarm a bomb.

EDIT: Man, Stage 3 is so comfily familiar, after so much time with Akio's other IREM/Nazca titles. :o Like a Prelude To Gunforce. I'd totally forgotten these poor bastards.
War is hell, kids! (■`w´■)
Scale-accurate to the R9's cockpit, even. I wonder if they're meant to be cyberdudes, or possessed humans. Or kidnapped ones, brr. Or maybe just a gritty detail; brings to mind Last Resort's tiny pilot d00ds.

Let's see what R-Types PS1 has to offer:

- runs at 60hz instead of 55hz like in arcade
- no slowdown in RT2
- different arrangement on the terrains (see pipes in st5 boss area)
- transparent HUD with opacity too low
- need to do codes to unlock stage select/full powerup cheat everytime

Sorry to disappoint you bro but SHITTY MAME is much better in this regard, currently the best way to play arcade RTs and you can setup autofire/practice tools whatever you want and runs at correct Hz and slowdown.
