What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
This will be an interesting week. Aside from everything else, both Counter-Strike GO and Dark Souls are getting released. CSGO in about 13 hours, DS in two days.

As of patch 1.05 (the recent one), you only need 10 humanity to max out your item drop chance.FIL wrote:Can't for the life of me remember what weapon I beat him with. Unfortunately, it's whipping mly sorry arse, big time. Doesn't help that I found the lightening spear such a comfortable weapon to use that I levelled it up to +5 and used pretty much nothing else since then. It's barely scratching this guy, yet my other weapons aren't levelled at all, so even the heavy hitters are doing less damage. My only other viable option is a +10 longsword, but even that doesn't make a dent. Think I need to farm some green titanite, can anyone recommend where? I need to put this fucking game to bed once and for all.
Giant Blacksmith sells green titanite. Or you could try farming slimes by the bonfire in the depths. You'll need something like the Gold Serpent Ring or Symbol of Avarice to speed the process up. Held humanity helps too.

Counter-Strike: Global Operations
It's not just CS: Source with shadow-casting fences and palm trees, although it does look very nice. There are a large number of map tweaks (the famous music in Italy is gone, and the wine cellar has shifted closer to the center of the map, at least the counter-terrorist side's entrance) and the weapons seem much easier to use now. As a bonus there is a Call of Duty 4 / MW2-style timed kill house run - not an amazing one, but it works. A handful of annoyances are gone - the only trace of primary and secondary ammo (yeah, remember when you could buy a gun but not have any reserve ammunition?) is just some text in one of the default console strings.
The new Arsenal game mode - based on the Gun Game server-side mods - desperately needs more maps, and the "against a player with the gold knife" achievements are rather silly to grind out - on the other hand I bet you could get these quite easily over time. (This is also likely the place you will find Beretta Elite vs. Beretta Elite duels.) It is pretty fun, although the maps are very small.
Demolition is basically a super-focused de_ map mode, with side routes much closer to a central corridor layout, or a mostly open layout (lake and safe house) - meeting enemy fire only takes a handful of seconds. So far my shortest time (on the "shorttrain" map) is 18 seconds, from start to last guy down. There is also a component of the Gun Game mod in here, as each round you get a certain weapon, and getting one kill bumps you up to the next tier. The middle seems weak because you're stuck with shotguns and then pistols instead of rifles and submachine guns, but at least against bots they still worked quite well. You can still kill things in the face from quite a distance with the pistols, and easily - the randomness of the impact point of the first shot is very much toned down compared to previous games (also, I noticed that machine guns climb, so you can actually get good accuracy in full-auto close up by just skewing your view downwards; believing in the Rainbow Six-style reticle limits will cause your shots to mostly or all miss). The last tiers of weaponry in the Demolition mode are sniper rifles, and finally the team's auto sniper rifle. It annoys me that two of the pistols used are given low kill counts to trigger their achievement - I guess there's no mixing grinding with pleasure in this mode for those pistols.
Other errata: I suppose the details of this game have been known for a long while now. I was able to load it a bit early by selecting the "beta" install, and in the middle of playing that became the normal version - huh. Didn't spot any differences. For a while Steam's library menu showed both the beta and grayed-out (no Install option available) CSGO, but this fixed itself apparently. Some of the achievements dinged at odd times, such as the Frugal Beret - I believe that one triggered without being in a mode that awarded ammo (the achievement is for surviving and not spending any money). As the Galil AR and the FAMAS have been the standard "cheap" assault rifles of the T and CT teams for a long while now, it is odd that the Galil's kill achievement is 250 whereas the FAMAS is only 100.
Performance is very good with a Radeon 5800 series card. I even had (because I forgot to turn it off) 2X antialiasing and 4X anisotropic filtering on.
Been uploading a fair number of goofy screenshots. Whoops, time for another Steam update.
Edit: Forgot to mention one of the neat new features - not only is there offline bot play (the one time I tried to find a server it just went on and on, but that was pretty early in the day), but if you die, you can take over a bot! You'll end up competing against yourself, but it's a nice incentive to keep playing your best, and not to play too cautiously because it doesn't necessarily take you out of the game. Another piece of errata though: You have to select "E" to take over the bot, even if you have already remapped the "Use" key (E is the default).

Other update:
Team Fortress 2 co-op update (not that I've been playing this, and I'm not really sure what to expect of it - although I guess that's just the goofiness of TF2 making me not want to believe the bots would act any different from this).
True Crime - the original one set in LA. Ehh - I suppose it's okay, but I didn't give Mafia much playtime either (although I only played through one of the out-of-city storyline missions of that game so far). The repetitive nature and looks of these things grates on me; I guess it's OK that I never tried to buy into the GTA craze back when. I'm doing very successfully in TC (working on one of the "alternate" missions; have 20 good cop points, no storyline failures - only a few mission failures at all and half are temporary, due to not understanding game mechanics), but the combat - especially melee combat - isn't grabbing me. I've got 30% of the upgrades, and while they definitely add some "yay" factors, they don't fix the general button-mashing and slap-happy nature of the beast. And per my parenthetical, the game isn't very generous about letting you know what's expected at times. Spend another shield to retry training because the game didn't let me know that I could actually lose the auto-facing on a dummy which I was supposed to hit with a back-facing attack? The stealth missions, as expected for this vintage of game, are pretty shit too. At least those are livened up a little by some humorous scenes, but it's not much of a concession for having added something useless and also bad.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Virtual On: Force [360].
My friend had it on his Xbox through complicated means, and I went a few rounds with him.
It was fun because it was Virtual On, but it was SLOW. Painfully slow. The 4 player thing seemed to work pretty well, we both had AIs on our team.
But yeah, slow as fuuuuuuuck. Which is a shame, because it seemed like it could have been brilliant. VO on the Saturn is faster.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Hmm, Dark Souls is downloading - but I notice the Just Cause games (both of them) are $2.50 on Steam (the few packs of DLC are $.25 each too). Wonder if worth it. Annoyingly, all the stuff I wanted to get is too expensive still (the Arkham City games - although those are still recent - and especially older Capcom games such as Bionic Commando, the Lost Planet games, RE5 are all still $20 or so each - the Bionic Commando games are $9.99 individually or you could buy both for $19.98...what a deal!)
Lots of hilarious bitching at Steam's CS:GO forum. "The animation makes it too hard to aim predictably" what? Apparently some players would rather be shooting at running geometric primitives so it could be "predictable."
90% on Dark Souls - come on, come on...haven't been so interested in a console game since RE4 or Vagrant Story really! I just hope it doesn't look like shit on my monitor, like I fear might happen.

Another one for CS:GO here.
A few quarrels. When you're getting shot your movement doesn't seem to slow down as much as it does in CSS. Makes it feel like moving around and spraying at close quarters is slightly viable. Of course it will take more time to tell if that's really the case. Everyone can see what you post in global chat - EVEN IF YOU'RE DEAD - same goes for talking on the mic. Yes, if you talk on the mic the other team can hear you too. I'm hoping this isn't the case on most of the community servers, because that's seriously fucked.
I haven't spent much time outside the "find a game" option (which isn't very good, some players had pings as high as 250) but so far I haven't run into any of the new maps in the classic modes? Once again I hope the community servers fix this because that would be a let down. Gungame has always been kind of meh and this demolition mode is balls, so yeah. Of course, given the game's price there will probably be a ton of DLC maps...

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Just wrapped up the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Good god, the awesome.
Prime 1 = masterpiece. A bit easy, but as essentially a 3D remake of SM, it's incredible. Gonna have to replay it on hyper.
Prime 2 = masterpiece + a bunch of crap mechanics slapped on to make it stand out more. Light & dark worlds are fine, but constant energy siphoning and limited beam ammo were just a drag on the whole experience. Enemies def had too much hp in general, too. The last 20% or so of the game was pretty great, though.
Prime 3 = crowning achievement. I was expecting to prefer Prime 1 overall, but Prime 3 just nailed it in every category. Combat & difficulty were just right, weapon progression was ideal (elegant solutions to the constant swapping/charging in the first two), item searching was tons of fun (first 100% in a Metroid game for me) - although I guess the observatory maps kind of trivialize that. Perfect balance between linearity and exploration. And the environments are simply gorgeous. In what other game does an empty space station corridor make you stop and just drool at the eye candy?
So glad I don't have to play Other M now.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I've been inspired to revisit old NES games since discovering gamecenter cx only a month ago. Some friends and I played through Ninja Gaiden recently. Great game, looking forward to 2 and 3 though I hear they aren't as good. I love the controls and the balance of memorization/execution. stage 6-2 was the most fun I've had in awhile with a non-shmup. Rotating the controller around keeps it fresh too.

I GOTS
A FUCKIN CLAYMORE!!!!! EXCITEMENT
Also I let that stupid armored bull/pig thing burn itself mostly to death. I dropped the ladder to Undead Burg a while ago, just farming the 555 souls on the bridge from the dragon, heh.
This is actually my second play - my first play wasn't too successful and I accidentally pissed off the shopkeeper, and then he disappeared. Not having access to the bottomless chest and the repair would have made this unplayable in a hurry. That playthrough made it to about level 16; didn't beat the second boss; I also lost a lot of souls. Now I'm on level 28. Can't wait to pawn off all this low-level shit the zombies are dropping. Lots of deaths early on, not so much now. Unlike shmups, this game is bringing out the coward in me. Whenever I see something that doesn't look familiar or skinny, RUN AWAY! Actually I'm getting a ways into the game, and I might be able to take on that guy with the huge kite shield at the bottom of the Burg. At the bottom of the giant spiral staircase tower that takes you to the second boss, however, there's a really nasty thing with a club. I tried going back a few levels ago and he just one-shotted me. I haven't been doing anything with blocking, though, and my dodges after hits could be much more consistent.
Yeah, I thought I was gonna be tough playing a Thief. Well, who woulda thought - playing with daggers and short swords in Dark Souls will get your ass handed to you! Bosses don't care about crits or backstabs, and in many areas there's not enough maneuvering room to get behind even low-level things. Late in that first playthrough I found a short sword - marked improvement - but after I started a new game, I found some new stuff including the Winged Spear, and also remembered to use the target lock. Those two things make all the difference.
The game isn't flawless - the Havok ragdolls are dumb as hell and a few times I thought some DOOM III upside down spider monkey demon was chasing me, but it was just a stuck ragdoll. Also, enemies have some crazy air control in their jumps. From Undead Burg's bonfire, the third enemy looking backwards (the one that will charge up the stairs after taking care of the first soldier and the crossbow user) usually starts a jump going right into the corner post of a bridge, and then he magically scoots out along the inside of the bridge railing, and then pops back out where I am.
There have also been a few annoying deaths due to suddenly targeting the wrong enemy and doing a leaping attack when I didn't expect it - at least suicide leaps seem to thin the enemy ranks more than they hurt me, though.
People at FROM having fun: The sound of scooting down a ladder is the same sound used when you're quickly blasting along with the four-legged Core in the original Armored Core! Possibly the jump engine sound, don't recall exactly. However, it is the same sound!
The deagle would still seem to be the go-to pistol, but on the Steam forums people have pointed out that the Tec-9 gets one-shot kills from headshots, and has 32 rounds...the Elites are apparently not bad either. They don't seem to be nearly as inaccurate as they used to be.
I believe I saw is some console cvar (starts with mm_ I believe) you can use to limit how much lag is acceptable in match searches (not sure if this is per person or what).
Unfortunately, console cvars don't seem to be saving most of the time. The one I have been putting in every time is fps_max, which is currently "limited" at 300. I have been putting it at 120, which is actually right where my fps will peak (usually get between 80-120 fps), but until I find out something about tic rate I am not gonna put it any lower. net_graph does get saved.
There are some other odd choices in CS:GO that people have been noticing - most of them don't bother me or seem like a possible change of fresh air to me, but many of them ought to be changed for serious play. One change in CS:GO is that friendly spotting of enemies will add a red dot to the radar, which a lot of people have instantly hated (I personally think it's a good idea, anything to keep people from yammering on the mic, but a no-enemies radar definitely has its place too). Another is that the weapons are huge. I love this; combined with actually decent models for once, and we don't appear to be playing with plastic squirtguns anymore. However, the default pistols block the middle of your screen for a bit when you reload. Thankfully, somebody has figured out a bunch of view model fixes, and CS:GO already has options to move the placement of the models. Left-handed models are currently cvar only, which is lol.
I agree about gun game and demolition - demolition is really intense but it's way too thin, especially on some of the maps.
I think Louis had a saying that works here: "This is just like Counter-Strike!" Random SWAT member says "This is just like Left 4 Dead!" However, I don't think that model and asset reuse is quite as annoying in this game as it was getting in the HL2 games, but I do see they've reused that broken-down van model again (just improved the mesh and changed the textures).
Arsenal and Demolition modes aren't the end of the story though. From in-game resources, people have spotted references to a bunch of classic maps getting remade - including Vertigo and Assault! (I actually liked Assault's looks on CSS quite a bit; it was the most interesting of the maps visually when it was released, I thought; classic Assault has a place in my heart too.) Despite the cheap sale price, Valve is going to give this one full Workshop support; I think even if the 1.6 crowd doesn't take to it, enough people will like it and keep it in new maps and modes to keep it relevant for a long while.
It would also be nice, if only for modders, if Valve put vehicle support back in the game. But I guess they might be worried about people not buying HL3...
CS has had vehicles before; it can have them again. A well-done vehicles mode (not TF2 / L4D style cart / van pushing, or an open-map racing mode), even just bouncing around in the back of a Chevy blasting through a city, Lethal Enforcers-style, might have been just as fun as the gun game and demolition.

Spraying at very close quarters is viable - but depends on the weapon. CS:GO is much more strict about movement penalties to accuracy than CSS was, so you don't have people running into rooms and immediately getting headshot kills from their M4. I am worried that this might favor camping and making dead stops to shoot, but on the other hand CSS was ridiculous with shooting from the hip. The single-shot accuracy of the AK and M4 is improved, and people are rediscovering that the AK is a first-shot sniper rifle, just like 1.6 and earlier. The M4 also has some upgrades; it's not as accurate on the first shot but it seems to even out compared to the AK.Marble wrote:Another one for CS:GO here.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Agree fully - the need to have special light and dark ammo was a real pain. The colonial marines / Halo grunts hybrid characters were way outta place too. Unintentionally foreshadowing some later, Other effort there, I guess. I actually have the game on hold before the very endgame - I only just finished up Prime 1 about the same time I finally launched into Prime 2, a few months ago; I think my save file at that room leading up to Prime was from 2007 or so. Of course, I missed a scan somewhere. I missed a scan somewhere in Prime 2 that I shouldn't have - and of course it was one of the last bosses. Makes ya wish for a PC-style save system with redundant saves and not this puny flash memory save crap.Moniker wrote:Prime 1 = masterpiece.
Glad to hear about Prime 3 - guess I'll look into that one sometime, but still not enthusiastic about the nunchucks and Wiimote control.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
There are occasional motion gimmicks that aren't too intrusive. The main gameplay really benefits from the scheme, though. Really fluid and precise, since you can lock on and still shoot where you want. Probably wouldn't work in a competitive FPS setting, but it's great for single player.Ed Oscuro wrote:Glad to hear about Prime 3 - guess I'll look into that one sometime, but still not enthusiastic about the nunchucks and Wiimote control.

prime 3 is the worst of the trilogy imo. it has its moments, but is way too linear with the way it's split up into planets.

Yeah I know, I played it just before the Primes. It's entertaining but nowhere near the level of the Prime games. Just glad I don't have to follow nigh perfection with "pretty good".ryu wrote:otehr m is not that bad. if you can find a cheap copy it will most likely be worth the money.Moniker wrote:So glad I don't have to play Other M now.

Other M is worth the money for those who'd rather play games than make love to the internet.
If you play computer games with mouse & keyboard, you shouldn't have any problems with the controls. Whether you have some desk-like foundation to put your hands on where you play console games, however, is another story... Your lap should be enough, though, provided you sit properly.Ed Oscuro wrote:Glad to hear about Prime 3 - guess I'll look into that one sometime, but still not enthusiastic about the nunchucks and Wiimote control.

So I picked up Ninja Warriors for the Super Nintendo about a week ago. It kept locking up so I cleaned it a few times and it seems to work far better now. I credit-fed my way through normal mode and found it to be quite an awesome game. Stage four was probably my favorite with the helicopter tracking you and the boss unleashing satellite-guided laser beams. Cool shit. The ending made me feel sad, as all stories about robots tend to make me feel

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I feel that Prime 2's atmosphere, environments, and boss battles were the pinnacle of the trilogy. Prime 1, while stellar, had some more or less stock environments (though some really great ones, like Phazon Mines and Phendrana) - Echoes to me oozes with a whole lot more creativity. Beam ammo was never really a problem, and the Ing environment was wonderfully hostile and desolate.
Of course, one look at my username and you can see my bias!
Prime 3 was my least favorite of the trilogy, to be honest. I actually preferred the gamecube controls, and i hated fiddling around with those energy cells and door locks (totally unnecessary). The bosses lacked the creative spark of Echoes, and hypermode made a lot of levels a joke once you knew how to game the system.
It's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but I prefer the first two for my Prime experiences.
I really like the Ninja Warriors (again). Tons better than the arcade game (and I like the arcade game... except for those big ball-n-chain dudes that always kill me), with a lot more variety and 90s video-game zaniness (like those Mr. Big enemies in their MIB suits and the stone cold Steve Austin wannabes). A lot of depth lies in that game if you're willing to learn the combos.

Sanctuary Fortress = Best area in a Metroid game ever.
Anyway, I'm currently playing Bionic Commando for the Xbox 360. Not Rearmed, the fully 3D sequel.
And oh man, is it ever awesome. I know it's been hated on, but I don't see where that comes from. It's a really good game. The grappling works well. So the stages are fairly linear with radiation at the edges that kill you if you spend time in it, but that doesn't bother me. There's been stages with open areas, and you're not confined to just a small "corridor" otherwise either.
Was well worth the money*. Might actually want to start speedrunning this, I have a feeling cool stuff can be done with that.
*Used copy for 49 SEK, about $7.50

I *love* how the heli cuts that car's roof off with its first salvo, glass flying everywhere. Just gratifying, as is the game's action in general. NWA is pure quality, that three-button system is smooth as hell and it really demands smart play. And yeah, the ending is brutally downbeat, haha... I just wish all the bosses were Badass Android Killing Machines that went out with a bang like the first (or your own if you screw up).mrsmiley381 wrote:Stage four was probably my favorite with the helicopter tracking you and the boss unleashing satellite-guided laser beams. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
everything I've played today, wall of text
The King of Fighters 2002 [DC]. I like how they added Shingo and King, I wondered why they weren't in 2002 on the Neo Geo [yes, I did download an all-clear .VMI, I can't be bothered to unlock things], they were great!
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram [DC]. Played against some friends, won some, lost some. Got at least a handful of people interested in Virtual On, which is always good. Getting more used to the controls, and starting to get a preference for which Virtuaroids I like. I usually play VO(OM) on the Saturn.
I'm still mad how much of a downgrade Cypher got compared to Viper II in VO(OM). Viper II kicks ass. Cypher's shots do fuck all, and trying to come in close for melee attacks is extremely likely to get you killed. Also, I can't aim the SLC move in VOOT for shit.
Power Stone [DC], tons of fun. Lots deeper than I expected, had some human opponents to fight. It still comes down to getting the stones first, but using them well was very important, and trying to keep the opponent away from them while you went after them. Good stuff.
Persona 4 Arena [360]. Plugged in an Xtokki PS->360 adapter, I can't do anything with a 360 pad. Got my ass handed to me by some friends, although I did win like, 2 matches [out of like, 30 or so ;-;]. Not sure if I like it -- I notice when I make punishable mistakes before I get punished for them [good], but then I'm getting hit with painfully long combos, and doing some longish ones without really trying [bad]. Too combo heavy.
edit: fixed formatting, it was a serious wall of text that didn't look good at all

Uhh, this is in CSS, at least on every server I've ever played?Ed Oscuro wrote:One change in CS:GO is that friendly spotting of enemies will add a red dot to the radar, which a lot of people have instantly hated (I personally think it's a good idea, anything to keep people from yammering on the mic, but a no-enemies radar definitely has its place too).
Another dumb thing I've noticed is that there's no penalty for terrorists killing the hostages (once again, hope community servers can remedy this). Well you still lose money, but you don't get kicked off the server after killing a certain amount. That's really stupid, since basing your team's strategy around protecting the hosties/rescuing the hosties/defending a bomb point, etc. and trying to control the map accordingly is a huge part of what differentiates the CS series from other FPS games. Not that you can really talk to your team mates about strategy without letting the enemy team in on the convo now, anyway.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I think the radar complaints are coming from 1.6 players, who of course have shown up after disregarding every other game since they downloaded the original mod for free to make their preferences known

Don't try to use cyphers right weapon for damage, it's pretty much just a chip damage and pressuring tool (not a bad one at that). The right turbo right weapon laser is also one of the best lasers in the game IMO. very easy to sneak in some aimed cRTRW hits when people are moving around(crouch variant doesn't knock down) People usually say cyphers best weapon are the daggers as all the variants are useful and it's the spread attack. The most powerful attacks are crouching center weapon (half cancelled once you learn the timing) and forward dashing center weapon attacks (or back dash crouch for anti-air, RTCW if you're feeling lucky)null1024 wrote:I'm still mad how much of a downgrade Cypher got compared to Viper II in VO(OM). Cypher is also the only VR that can do two air dash attacks in a row which is easy to spam on beginners but against experienced players mainly use them as counter attacks (dash attacks are never safe) and/or end the attack series with CW because it gives you a speed boost until you land. Main thing I'm disappointed with the character is that the fighter mode is extremely useless, the damage and turning speed are a joke so it's just for showing off. wish it had some use because it looks awesome.
SLC on the other hand is pretty good but gimmicky.. the top/most active player on the XBLA leaderboard spams it like a bastard until his opponent figures him out, haha
