I keep thinking I want to go back and play through JC2 again, but I think I completed pretty much every mission in the game so I would probably get bored very quickly.Illyrian wrote:Randomly dicking around in Just Cause 2

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Beat Syndicate campaign, then played around in the hilariously broken, idiot-filled multiplayer. Can't say I was overall disappointed with it, at least. Beat Phantasy Star Portable after that and found the entire thing to be ass overall. Started Phantasy Star Portable 2 and was instantly more impressed. Might end up playing that more than Binary Domain when I pick that up.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I just cleared Cave Story+ which I had gotten from a Humble Bundle a while back. It starts off kind of slow but gets better, especially after gaining the ability to fly around using the machine gun and booster (kind of reminded me of Sub Terrania at that point). The boss rush at the end was pretty awesome. The only dumb part is that the full-screen mode used the ugly nearest-neighbor type of scaling for some reason.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
If you got the machine gun & first available booster, you missed out on the true final stages, the ultimate equipment, and the good ending. Worth playing through again, IMO.ED-057 wrote:I just cleared Cave Story+ which I had gotten from a Humble Bundle a while back. FYI even if you reinstall your OS Steam remembers your save file, so you don't need to play through it again to get to mercenary mode.shmuppyLove wrote:I keep thinking I want to go back and play through JC2 again, but I think I completed pretty much every mission in the game so I would probably get bored very quickly.Illyrian wrote:Randomly dicking around in Just Cause 2

I beat Kid Dracula for Famicom on a credit. Definitely on the easier end of the Castlevania spectrum, but it's not without it's tricky spots. The copious amount of extra lives they give you during the bonus stages sure helps (one time I got 18 lives on one stage). Kind of a crappy game, but it's got style at least.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I fired it back up last month for the first time since I was a kid. Definitely the best GameBoy entry. There's a really great part towards the end where you're fighting a big dragon in a tunnel. I've been playing through each game in the order of release and snapping a pic for The Castlevania Instagram Project. How hard was Haunted Castle to beat? That game kicks my ass harder than most CV games. I imagine you have to take it pretty slow?

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
It's a real pain because the controls are so terrible. The graphics & animations are also VERY ugly so I consider it to be one of the worst entries in the series. However, I don't find it nearly as hard as Vampire Killer which is downright unfair at times. For a good laugh check out the Amiga version of Castlevania.

Haha... it's Castlevania's final battle via Yellow Submarine's album art.

Yes, yes he does. If he's going to get the best ending.

I played Belmonts Revenge last night for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. It actually kind of kicks ass. Good level design, tight controls, and great music. One of the better games in the series up to this point.circuitface wrote:I fired it back up last month for the first time since I was a kid. Definitely the best GameBoy entry. I'm almost done with Elnard, the JP version of Seventh Saga. I've been revisiting old 8/16 bit rpgs now that I have a nice RGB+high fidelity sound setup. Elnard has some truly amazing music... too bad the composer never did anything else. The game itself is a mixed bag though.

Just came back recently to Lufia: The Legend Returns! I am so damn glad that I STILL have that Game Boy multicart which contains THAT game, because it's really a great RPG!

I'm playing some Dishwasher Vampire whatever it's called. It's a very pretty game, but seems VERY one-track so far.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yeah I played some of the sequel. The combat is fairly deep for a 2D brawler, but it is really just a series of arena fights. Not that DMC & Bayonetta are any different in that regard. You gotta really like the fundamental gameplay, coz that's all there is, and not a whole lotta eye-candy to distract you.Marc wrote:I'm playing some Dishwasher Vampire whatever it's called. I have a Final Fantasy XII save that's pretty close to 100% completion. Right now I'm trying to chase those last few Bestiary entries, and I've also opened a new save file that I'm trying to turn into a Perfect file (high level at the start, good weapons early, sequence breaking and glitches).
Funny how both games I'm playing right now have chaining.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Still playing this, now I'm fighting Chitose, who will constantly kill one of my party members, and in the meantime let me get in an asston of hits, and then when I can't revive the third party member anymore, she decides to actually fight me [Luca], and kill me before I can recover enough HP.null1024 wrote:Tales of Innocence [DS], getting wrecked fighting Chien/Cerberus.
I'm actually liking the fact that I'm having somewhat challenging boss fights though.
For the one quoted, I had to make sure I was Chien's target so my teammates could survive at all, and I'd be able to revive myself through them when I died, repeatedly.
Also, this translation seems really bloody professional. Absolute Zero is awesome.

There are two major versions, with very different difficulty levels.drauch wrote:How hard was Haunted Castle to beat? That game kicks my ass harder than most CV games. I imagine you have to take it pretty slow?
I actually like Haunted Castle's graphics, they're cheesy and chunky, but not bad. I mean, just look at ol' Shufflin' Rick there (to be fair, Splatterhouse does more with fewer graphics onscreen at a time than HC does, which is pretty gaudy and overboard at times). I think everybody's been spoiled by elven CV hero(ines) anyway.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yea, I beat the easier Japanese version of Haunted Castle and don't really feel like going back.
The Castlevania Challenge rolls on as I cleared Belmont's Revenge on Gameboy tonight on a credit. Very solid game all-around and a pleasant surprise.
Up next: Super Castlevania IV. I've played it a little in the past and thought it was weak, but always wanted to put some more time into it to be sure.

SCVIV has an extended Easy Street segment for the beginning; gets hard(er) later (much later, really).
Kind of agast at the idea that anybody could dislike SCVIV's looks and music. It's different, sure, but that's just part of the charm for me. Also, they took out the Getsu Fuuma Den alien burrower enemies; we should all be glad.

The graphical design in SCVIV is the best interpretation of western mythology that japanese game developers have ever done.Ed Oscuro wrote: Kind of agast at the idea that anybody could dislike SCVIV's looks and music.
The music is basically video gamey 60's jazz done orchestrally. Completely awesome.
Fucked up video game hard bop:

And yeah, i absolutely love the game. My favourite Castlevania.
Could have something do with it being the first CV i ever played.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I still find the atmosphere of the endgame boss rush ("Room of Close Associates") quite stunning. The bleak skyline, opulent surroundings and darkly simmering music give it a regal yet muted, unmistakably morbid air. Real "Demon Castle Dracula" stuff!

By the time you get to Henne Mines you can have the Zodiac Spear and a bunch of other goodies from Salikawood/Nabreus Deadlands. Tiamat won't be an issue.Illyrian wrote:Have fun fighting Tiamat for hours!RNGmaster wrote:I have a Final Fantasy XII save that's pretty close to 100% completion. I might also run a normal game w/o level grinding concurrently, just for lulz.
