Excellent choice. I just watched through it last week, great stuff. It's the kind of military-sci-fi-mecha anime I wish every Gundam series was.

Speaking of anime which isn't that, I've started watching Gundam ZZ. After 10 episodes I have the same problems with it than I did with Zeta Gundam, only this time they've added physical comedy to the mix. Groan.
cool yeah it does look good from reviews I've read - yeah I think I just want to watch everything UC (and tbh as close to the original series era too (I really don't like when the mecha are getting too detailed/bitty towards end of even Zeta Gundam))

so yeah I think I'll watch The 08th MS and then maybe the War In Pocket ones next...

yeah I read somewhere that ZZ isn't great but still, tbh at this stage I think I am going to end up watching everything UC I can get my hands on eventually no matter what :p (or maybe :( ) ;)

I bought Battle Angel on VHS for 99 cents. It almost makes me want to squeal like a fangirl. Almost. /gay

I think James Cameron said he wants to do a Battle Angel Alita movie after Avatar 2. There's a picture of him wearing an Alita shirt on the set of Avatar.

Somehow, I have a lot more faith in him than whoever pitched the American Akira, even if Titanic and Avatar were shitty (and absurdly successful) movies.

In other "Western live action adaptations of classic anime" news, Cobra the Space Pirate is still set for 2013.

Gunnm was my favorite manga when I was younger and fiending over all things post-apocalyptic. I remember being excited for the Last Order series as well, but it was pretty bad. I imagine there's been even more spinoffs, Ghost in the Shell style, since last I checked...

I would utterly 1000% recommend Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 - War In The Pocket which I just finished:
on every level, the art is incredible and the 'original' Gundam variant looks extremely cool. It's also great how it shows 'day to day' life in the colonies - I don't really want to spoilzors anything for anyone that hasn't seen it, but the story itself is just beautiful and utterly, utterly tragic - it is now actually my favourite anime I've ever seen - I'd put it above the original Mobile Suit Gundam even... (well maybe (just))

the soundtrack maybe a little too DX-7/80s workstation centric but I actually think it adds to the tragic feel as you have these 'optimistic' sounding plinky plonky 80s themes in contrast to the utter depress of the storyline - pure epic

Yeah, it's one my favourite Gundam series and has the best chara designs (by Mikimoto Haruhiko of GunBuster and Macross fame). I liked Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory better in spite of the story flaws; I rank it as the best of what I've seen of the Gundam canon 8)

Finished the original arc of Space Battleship Yamato tonight. So awesome. Too bad there isn't a release of the series that isn't Star Blazers, or good copies of the movies on DVD in the U.S. Same with all of Leiji Matsumoto's stuff, really. Trying to catch up on his work. Thinking of starting Space Pirate Captain Harlock next.

Also starting watching Mitchiko and Hatchin. Kinda restoring my faith that good anime can still be made.

^I got quite a few of those myself. Here was my list:
* 1 of Blue Drop DVD Complete Collection (S)
* 1 of Chance Pop Session DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)
* 1 of Cromartie High School DVD Complete Collection (Hyb) (Thinpak)
* 1 of FLCL DVD Complete Series (Hyb) - Anime Classics
* 1 of Ghost Sweeper Mikami DVD Collection 1 (S)
* 1 of This Ugly Yet Beautiful World DVD Complete Collection (Hyb) (Thinpak)
* 1 of Those Who Hunt Elves DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 4 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 5 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 6 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 7 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 8 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD 9 (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest TV DVD Box Set 4 (10-13) (Hyb)
* 1 of Area 88 OVA Series DVD (Hyb)
* 1 of Area 88 TV Series DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)
* 1 of Area 88 TV+OVA Bargain Bundle (Hyb)
* 1 of Clannad DVD Collection 1 (S)
* 1 of Clannad DVD Collection 2 (S)
* 1 of Ikki-Tousen DVD Complete Series (Hyb) - S.A.V.E. Edition
* 1 of Nextworld Graphic Novel 1 (160 pgs) (Osamu Tezuka)
* 1 of Nextworld Graphic Novel 2 (168 pgs) (Osamu Tezuka)
* 1 of Now and Then, Here and There DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)
* 1 of Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)
* 1 of Princess Minerva DVD (Hyb)
* 1 of Sakura Wars TV DVD Complete TV Series (Hyb)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest Season 2 DVD Collection 1 (S)
* 1 of You're Under Arrest Season 2 DVD Collection 2 (S)

Ordered FLCL for a friend, but yeah, I went way overboard and spent more than I thought. The real money burner was realizing that they carry the original You're Under Arrest series for really fucking cheap in their bargain bin and completing my collection, especially since I watched an auction of the entire series go for 250 dollars about 2 weeks ago. It's going to be slightly annoying owning some of the discs in the "box" sets, but I can live with it for the price. Never going outside again.

Give Galaxy Express 999 a shot. It's long but very worth it.

The original series is head and shoulders everything else by everyone else, ever.

But seriously, by all means please do, and add Galaxy Express 999. The original Harlock was a prototypical example of speculative fiction, sci-fi with the goal of discussing serious themes. I guess that the finale will break your heart.

In many aspects, it is the quintessential seinen anime, although at the time there was no distinction among age groups. The '83 remake was shit, although better animated: it was just another "bad aliens invade Earth, let's kill them!" series. I won't even mention the rest.

The animation in both was not the best, by their period's standards, but they are both very well-thought, thought-provoking, entertaining series.

Fun facts:

Harlock was *immensely* popular in Europe, especially Italy, Germany and France, to the point that my generation (born in the '80s) were called the Harlock generation (Albator, in France).

Daft Punk produced Interstella 5555 with Matsumoto because they wanted to work with their "national" and cultural hero. Also, Matsumoto received the highest honorary title for a foreigner, for artistic merits.

...and, Maya is friggin moe :lol:
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

Is this Area 88 from whence the side scrolling shmup (which I like a lot) came? (or vice versa)

PS 08th MS lookin cool so far - I dont really like the design of the people too much, but the mechanical stuff and ships etc. are very nicely drawn IMO...

Um, Macross? There was also a Mazinger Z-based shoot-'em-up by Banpresto, but I forgot the name.

Personally, I only liked the Area 88 OAVs and not the TV series, but now the whole thing is bundled into a 10-dollar package, so you may as well get it for free. The OAV series and manga are classics, and everyone in the scene should give it a try 8)

Hahaha. Dude, you're crazier than an outhouse rat (MST3K reference) 8) AnimEigo's license will expire next month, so those DVDs will be wiped out. The thing about those is that they carry the original 4 OAVs in the first disc... AND that their translations are the best, not to mention they went ahead and dubbed some of those episodes (it's raer for AnimEigo to bother with dubbing :o ). If Section 23 or Sentai (or whatever ADV goes by nowadays) decide to license season 1, then those translations will get butchered.

There is a Salamander anime, but it's not particularly good. Still worth a watch for a shmup-fan I suppose, you can make a game out of recognizing all the bits it takes from the games.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
