I so badly want to disagree with you on this

I really don't understand that attitude.

Why would you go into a conversation wanting to disagree?

It's not the conversation, it's the movie. Before I ever watched it, I was pretty certain that it was going to be nothing shy of a disaster of a movie...nigh-unwatchable. There are still things about it that I don't care for (I still don't categorize Justin Timberlake as any kind of actor), but the package itself was surprisingly well-put-together and it drew me in almost in spite of myself. Even Timberlake's presence is tolerated by way of everything else being pretty top-notch.

It's kind of like "Fight Club" with me. I *hate* that I love that movie, but I absolutely do, in spite of the fact that I hate the primary actors.

Ok, I still think it an odd choice of words, but I get it.

Timberlake is not an actor but a good director can often wean a performance out of anyone. I like to cite Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan as an example.

Fight Club is a pretty expert novel adaptation, in like Shawshank Redemption it does its own thing and is just as successful a vision.

While I thought True Detective was good, it's not nearly as good as Hannibal, and that's a friggin' Network show.

I like hannibal, but only because of Mads Mikkelsen. vs true detective, the caliber of writing is incomparable. the killers methodologies become more and more ludicrous with each Hannibal episode. what was the last one? oh yea, a hydraulic cave bear helmet... what the fuck.....

I also just saw time travel movie Time After Time. Kind of hammy, and I wasn't captivated from the off, but quickly I found myself utterly besotted. Something strange and distinct about it I bloody loved.

And I watched The Outsiders last night. Obviously a great movie; a darker Stand By Me.

Extremely entertaining movie! Especially if you like 80s movies. Features a young Jim Carrey, Geoff Goldblum, Damon Wayans and Geena Davis.
Truly bizarre movie about sexually frustrated aliens coming to visit earth. Why? Who knows. Who cares. It is hilarious.

Godzilla

I think it turned out far better than could be expected from a hollywood Godzilla movie, although my expectations were admittedly low after the disaster that was the Emmerich version.

At least Godzilla looked like Godzilla, sounded like Godzilla and largely acted like Godzilla. The enemy monsters were pretty cool, too, and the overall scale of destruction was quite satisfying. On the other hand, the percentage of human drama vs. rampaging monsters should have been reversed at the very least. There was far too much of the former and too little of the latter. On the bright side, the drama bits were a little less cringe-worthy than in other recent movies (World War Z comes to mind), and Bryan Cranston's performance was actually quite enjoyable.

What I really liked about the movie was that nothing the humans did had any effect on the progress and outcome of the story, as the monsters did their thing and never even showed a passing interest in what those silly little humans did. If you think about it, that makes a lot of sense. Makes you wonder even more why the movie wasn't 100% rampaging monsters, though.

Mad Dog Vs. the brothers, and Mad Dog Vs. Jaka are ridiculously awesome scenes.

The sequel isn't just an amazing action movie (it isn't a stretch to say best ever), but it is a damn fine movie in its own right.

Nothing, and I mean nothing will prepare you for the final showdown, in fact the less you know going in the better.
I had almost unrealistic expectations for the sequel, and I was not let down. You will not be either.

On the strength of y'all's praises, I got the first one off of Amazon Instant Stream. Don't go this route. It "assesses" whether your PC can handle HD (mine can) and decides whether you're allowed to download the HD version ($3 more than the SD version. Amazon didn't let me go HD, even though I've gotten other movies on HD from the same service. Assholes. I still payed the HD rate.) Gonna hafta go the customer service route there, I guess.

Anyway, excellent action flick. Like Dredd, except with kung fu, but less photographic flair. Dunno why they decided to desaturate the entire film. Now I have two go-to 20XX-era action flicks. Mad Dog vs. the Bros was indeed epic. A bit overlong maybe, but goddamn, extremely well done. That fight's finale was incredible. Other favorite bit was protagonist bashing thug's skull three times, descending, against a ceramic wall.

A certain scene nipped the heels of the eternally supreme Bathhouse scene from Eastern Promises. And that's a pretty high bar.

I'm actually going to miss the final showing of the "bakuon" version next week b/c of a music festival. This is bitter sweet for me as I've gone every time they've shown it, and tried to bring whomever with me I could. There's another showing during work hours I might try, but not holding my breath. I saw it in the theater 3 times last year, and twice so far this year. I think states what I think of the film. It ages far better than me.

I did, however, score the original vinyl in pristine condition for 6800 yen which is a steal. I saw a not-mint, "sample" copy on YJ clear 20,000 days later.

I popped the first in last night because of this thread. Even after seeing the sequel 3 times I have to say a couple of things:

1- The original is still bad ass. There was no point where I thought "I'd rather be watching Raid 2 because it does XYZ better than the first". I haven't watched it back to back yet, but I have think it will feel like a play with two acts.

2- There are certain lines spoken in the first that relate to things in 2, I know Evans wrote the sequel first, but it is still very cool.

Just got home from seeing Neighbors.

Some pretty great gags in there, and admirably avoids your typical comedy trope of 'getting serious' for a bit in the 4th act (well, there were a few brief slips, but quickly aborted). Probably wouldn't see it a second time. Still, don't regret the cost of the ticket. I also am hopelessly in love w/ Rose Byrne (mainly known from the show Damages). B-

Damn, really want to see Raid 2!

Went to see The Great Hypnotist last night, Chinese film with all that stuff Hollywood movies don't have, like scripts, plotting, dialogue, acting, storylines, etc.

Not a great movie, but the premise is at least fresh and I liked having the whole thing between 2 actors in a doctor's office. The twist wasn't predictable, but sometimes the explanation is unnecessarily over detailed in Chinese movies (although no way near the ridiculousness of Hong Kong cinema.)

Interesting and engaging nonetheless. And not in 3D.
