Abel Ferrara is a pretty cool dood. I still need to see Ms. 45! I'm a big fan of the original Bad Lieutenant, yet I still really appreciated Herzog's ridiculous Cage film. Definitely worth seeing, especially since Cage is in top batshit form.

Speaking of Abel Ferrara, I just bought the recently released steelbook of King of New York. A great film.

Currently working my way through the Telegraph's Operation Blackjack, otherwise known as the Jericho series (the decisive boxset).

Also bought the 25th anniversary edition of 1982's Wild Style. The acting is shoddy, but of course that doesn't matter at all. Its a piece of history.

Adaptation is a great Nick Cage film.

I see Adaptation as more of a great Charlie Kaufman flick that Nic Cage just happened to star in, akin to, say, Punch Drunk Love being a great Paul Thomas Anderson flick that Adam Sandler just happened to star in. Both of these films were written and created in such a way that having these guys in the lead role is just another puzzle piece to what makes them such unique, great movies.

Went to see Untouchable last night. We were the only ones in the theatre, so helped ourselves to free VIP seating.

It's playing here now, and quite close. However, French w/ Japanese subtitles isn't my idea of fun.

Forgot one of his best. Leaving Las Vegas. Just now saw he got an academy award for it. All that and Elizabeth Shue's cans.

Also just watched Aliens Special Version. Got the BluRayz Anthology for $30. Can't really say much that hasn't been said about this flick before!

Live and Let Die aka James Bond vs. Blaxploitation

Roger Moore is a fine Bond and this is a great opening for his interpretation of the character. Fun, but a little too heavy on the 1970s schtick. I know it was the times, but it really makes the film feel dated in retrospect. So many afros

Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah - More 90s mayhem. Ghidorah's "origins" this time around are quite interesting. Probably one of the more ridiculous human sub-plots of the series, which certainly isn't a bad thing. At one point I thought I was watching Terminator 2, even. Monster fights are good, but nothing spectacular; although one may note this was Mecha King Ghidorah's first appearance, which is groovy. My love for the film would probably be a little more if I wasn't forced to watch the dubbed version, as it's the only one that exists via region 1. May have to splurge and get the R3 DVD at some point, as I don't see it getting a re-release anytime in the near future.

The R4 Australian release from Madman is the best quality DVD version currently available. A trickle of Godzilla movies are seeing blu-ray releases in English now, but not the ones in Sony's R1 catalogue yet.

GvsKG is what I like to call a glorious mess. Its plot is hopelessly nonsensical, but it's much more interested in throwing cool scenes onto the screen, so it's hard to hold its failings against it. Any scenes of the android running are pure gold.

I've been rewatching some kaiju films myself. Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, Rodan, King Kong Escapes, Mothra, and also Latitude Zero all this past week. I'll probably watch King Kong Vs Godzilla or Gamera tonight. I've been in a kind of giant monster mood I guess. I've been buying up the Bandai Creations Fusion figures too. The good ones anyway.

I saw Godzilla: Final Wars (I think that's its name) the other night on SBS (months ago).

Seemed like it was trying to be Power Rangers, Fast and Furious, ET and Godzilla at the same time. Hell, it even had one bloke who looked like something out of Street Fighter speaking plain English to everyone else understanding and replying in Japanese with subtitles. Nice entertainment film though, pretty colours etc.

Meh. I'm a dirty pirate. Latitude Zero is definitely fun and worth checking out.

Honestly I'd be willing to pay a few bucks for digital downloads but after selling my collection of like 300 DVDs and BRs off last year I just don't feel like acquiring physical movies anymore.

There is a new one in production meant to be released in 2014. It is being filmed in Canada I believe.

It is a new western version but I think they are maintaining the real likeness and not the awful 1998 American version.

Yeah, pre-production they mentioned that Final Wars in 2004 was their last film for 10 years, subsequently tearing down some of their old studios and such. I'm a bit apprehensive since it's not a native release, but hopefully they can prove me wrong. I forgot where I read it, but the director said something along the lines that it would be really serious; a film he has been wanting to see for years. We'll see, I suppose...

The new Godzilla movie is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and made through Legendary Pictures. At the least, the property is in the hands of people who respect it this time. Tristar's meagre effort was doomed the moment Emmerich and Devlin were signed, due to their utter disdain for the character and the kaiju genre.

After all the praise everywhere, my expectations were as high as Ma Ma's high rise, reaching up from the rubble of Mega City 1 into the smog above. Let's just say I was blown away. I need to go see this again or buy a fucking huge 3D TV when it comes out on Bluray.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark - the new blu-ray release. A couple of people have taken exception to this - it has quite strong colour tones, but to be honest that's kind of how I remembered it in my mind anyway. I think it's a pretty good release, and where the film really isn't the best of quality they've avoided the temptation to apply hateful DNR.

I'll be watching the rest of the box set in due course.

Just a few months back, Lucasfilm loaned their own original 35mm print version of Raiders of the Lost Ark to the Modesto, CA based State Theater to be properly shown just for one day. The year before, they loaned their personal 35mm reel copy of the original 1983 theatrical version of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It sure is great to know that Lucasfilm will gladly loan out their 35mm print versions for special occasions. Comparing the original 35mm print to the recent Blu-Ray version of RotLA is quite something indeed.

Totally!! It blew me away as well. I should totally try and see it again before its out of theatres. Thankfully my buddy has a 47" 3D capable TV, and he grabs all the 3D movies that come out, so I can see it again that way too.

You funny 3D people It wasn't easy to find a cinema running a 2D showing of this. I was already not a regular film goer, but that eye bending 3D they've decided to ram down people's throats with a 3 foot pole really is the end of it.

I really *hate* 3D as well normally, but as important parts of this movie is shown "filtered" by a reality changing drug and it's effects, seeing it in 2D must feel like seeing a widescreen movie in pan & scan 4:3.

I keep thinking about this film all day today, and that hasn't happened for quite some time.

For me this past week I've seen both Prometheus (in 3D so well implemented you immediately forget its there and therefore may as well be watching old '2D') and Drive, so I've had my fill of 'close to great and less than average'.

I'm open minded to this newfangled 3D, but my problem is that I've never been actually aware of seeing traditional 2D TV from in 2D. That is to say, when I watch, for example, the original Die Hard in 2D, I don't see a flat 2D Bruce Willis. My eye interprets it as a 3D image. And the fact is that to me the new stereoscopic 3D feels like much the same thing; an illusion of 3D on a 2D screen. I admit it can look great, but I doesn't seem like a huge step forward to me.

Better than Prometheus though.

Each viewing only makes its storytelling flaws even clearer and clearer. The first 15 minutes of that movie is one of the best I have seen in almost any movie, it's after that 15-minute mark that it totally derails into weird drek

Can't this be done well at times? Isn't this technically what they've done to Blade Runner Final Cut and the Aliens box set? I have both, and was pretty impressed w/ the quality. Clean, but some 80s film grain left in there.
