Depressing.

When you're in Japan perusing Tinder and that ilk, you realize most of the females on there fall under a similar umbrella as the retarded "American" girl that wanted to go to Zara but could not string a sentence together in English.

On a lighter note... I've only seen one recent Japanese film, and it was good. Umi yori mada fukaku / After the Storm by Koreeda. My first of his actually, but it moved me to watch Dare mo Shiranai which was... baffling, but great.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was much better than Logan and Guardians 2 combined.

Babe
Is this a classic? Probably not, but I still enjoy the heck out of it as much as I did the first time I ever saw it. Good Pig!

It's hard not to see the '80s as the peak: John Byrne on Fantastic Four, Chris Claremont on X-Men, Frank Miller on Daredevil, Walt Simonson on Thor, David Michelinie on Iron Man... talented creators who really got the characters, and enough history to play off of without being overwhelming.
I wouldn't say 70s Marvel was all that terrible... Englehart and Gerber were fairly good on Cap, Defenders, and Man-Thing, and I have a soft spot for Gerber's brief stint with the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Then there's the Korvac Saga and Jim Starlin's Thanos arc... you can even find a few decent Fantastic Four stories if you're willing to wade through the muck.

Fall of The Jedi Episode One
This is the Q2 edit of The Phantom Menace. This is an even more tightly wound edit of this than Hal9000's and moves pretty fast whilr feeling like a real Star Wars movie. C3PO and R2D2 are minimal in this as is Jar Jar, but everything works well here. I think this, then the two Hal9000 edits for the other prequel trilogy movies work well together.

Japanese cinema has been so bad for so long I'm surprised anyone is still counting.

Nailed it. Funny, cool and dramatic, great cast etc. Fits so well with the rest of the MCU (which I really love as well, so if you don't, then you can lower your expectations).
Expectations lowered.

The Circle (2017) - James Ponsoldt

Shit, shit and also shit.
t.v calibre writing . Screenplay that devolves chronically as it goes on. Can it get worse? Why, yes, yes it can;
Emma Watson; can not act to save her life. Pure fucking torture to endure. She seems to have an exceptionally dislikeable on screen presence. There is no way she would have made it through casting, back in the day. Obviously being force fed to the world by those who have big plans for her.
The fact that she is going "full George Clooney", mixed with a dash of our U.N overlords deeming her a useful ambassador for whatever propaganda du jour they are pushing, adds an even more stinky dash of shit, to the shit.

Also, Tom Hanks - Born with an exceptional "nice guy" face, voice and manner; problem is, years of watching him can lead to self-loathing from knowing you are being fooled. I for one, reached that point a long time ago. Tommy boy, is the cinema equivalent of diabetes. Fuck!

Last but by no means least, is that Director/writer James Ponsoldt seems to have cast and this pair accepted these roles, with no sense of irony.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Even better than Big Hero 6; it makes Avengers: Civil War (of which it represents a chronologically overlapping sequel/side story) slightly less bad in retrospect.
Typical Spiderman situations and clichés are treated without the traditional excessive drama, boldly leaving out the "proper" origin story (in particular, the "before and after" comparison) to focus on Peter Parker's friends and on Peter's transition from amateur to Avenger. The protagonist is less lonely and far more realistic than usual; the enemy is also far more normal, at all levels (psychological, physical, moral...), than the traditional tragic, doomed, desperate monsters. Not by chance, many more characters than usual end up knowing Peter's secret identity (and of course he doesn't make a particularly big deal of the situation).

The semi-realistic and low-key treatment of Spiderman is not only very consistent and well-made, but it shows a promising way to adapt comics to good stories and get rid of thick encrustations of melodrama. Moreover, these achievements don't interfere with subtle and unsubtle references, jokes and general fanservice (for example, the last post-credits scene is both philosophically and thematically important and more genuinely silly than the whole of Deadpool).

Will check those two out next -- cheers. I scoped him out on IMDB and he's got a lot of output. For shame I didn't keep up with the actual good Japanese output while living there.

Inland Empire

Figured I would squeeze this in while we had an off week with Twin Peaks. Started it on a plane, but had to finish on the ground. Not sure where I stand on this. Part of me would like to watch it again to try to decipher it a bit more... the other part of me feels that Lynch either didn't get the budget he wanted, or didn't know how to wield the new technology (digital) on his maiden outing. Had I watched this before starting Twin Peaks, I would have been very, very weary.

EDIT: Just read this was shot in standard definition. Uh... what's the point of the blu ray? Digital just doesn't age well, and this is proof.

E.T.-I can't believe I wanted this long to see it again. Still every bit as good as I remembered. A nice bonus is that the Netflix version is the unedited version. Guns and no cheesy CG! I heard the Blu-ray is unedited, as well.

Naked Gun - Hilarious movie. Not quite as good as police squad, but still very well done. I prefer the more deadpan version of Drebin, but this version works too.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Man, in this age of movies and TV shows literally designed by AI algorithms is it even conceivable the crazy experimental shit they threw millions of dollars at back in the 80s? Half hard-boiled detective story with sex and violence and alcoholism, half goofball looney tunes. Shit, you see a man being fatally shot complete with squibs in this kids movie! Let's hear it for cocaine!

Nowadays kids movies are completely sanitized and they keep the adults awake with pop culture references.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Roger Rabbit 2 is something the director wanted to shoot for decades now, but modern Disney has absolutely no interest in doing it.

The last movie out of Hollywood with the potential to offend anybody I can remember was Jarhead. That... was absolutely hilarious to me. They marketed the thing as some kind of epic badass romanticized war film (some of the most beautiful false advertising of all time), so all the meat heads who don't know you can google movies before watching them walked right into the reality grinder. Hearing about the depressed faces of marines on their way out, priceless.

I never thought of it as a kids' movie and was surprised when I first found out it was from Disney, a company known for family friendly movies.

You're probably right. I guess the reason I thought it was a kids movie growing up is my family went to Disney World right when the film was coming out and they had a big kid-friendly exhibit on the making of the movie, not to mention an abortive attempt to insert straight-cartoon Roger Rabbit shorts into their actual kids movies like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids."

It is a kid's movie. Not much more risque than old Looney Tunes episodes. For ~8 years+. It's not Barney the Dinosaur for 2 year olds. There's a wide range of development, there.

One of the incomprehensible mysteries of life is why did anyone produce over 300 episodes of Teletubbies. It's literally meant to be watched only by babies, and would be outgrown faster than they could be appreciated. If 9 month olds can really even tell the difference between 100 episodes to begin with.

All of the Richard Williams feature films I've watched have been massively entertaining, but some also bear the unmistakable mark of running out of money, or studio interference, or both.

Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure is a fun, trippy cartoon that oscillates between psychedelic imagery and heartwarming musical numbers (Ann's voice actress sounds like the sweetest person you'll ever meet). The ending is kinda rushed though, as it feels as if they had some more ideas to develop before the funding ran out. And maybe a few too many songs though (though several are great!). It's definitely worth a watch though; while some parts drag, it has many scenes with lively energy and talent.

The Thief and the Cobbler is pretty incredible, though you would never know that if you watched its bastardized Disney release, which killed the movie, raped its corpse, and froze its dead, raped body on display for general consumption. The original, what remains of the unfinished movie (via the so-called "ReCobbled Cut" of the film) is essential animation watching, to be dumbfounded by how they could possibly have animated some of the stuff you see on screen.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is probably Williams' masterpiece, in terms of coherent, cohesive, finished works. Its animation hits all the right notes and is wrapped around Zemeckis' impeccable direction from a great corps of actors and actresses.

I had no idea Richard Williams was involved with that. I only remember seeing a few of the Chuck Jones Raggedy Ann and Andy cartoons with the Wolf that bared a huge resemblance to Wile E. Coyote.

I was also pleasantly surprised for the same reason. I guess it finally hit the Marvel Studios production committee that there's only so many sequels you can milk if every movie is about preventing a world-wide catastrophe in New York by punching bad guys and protagonists going from zero to hero in every single sequel over and over, so the better option is to take it slowly in terms of character progression and to focus on small-time crooks every now and then. There's no three-minute long training montages where Peter goes from bumbling buffoon to flawless master web-slinging athlete, here he still keeps making rookie mistakes as he's adjusting to the big time superhero business. Tony Stark acting like his mentor/father-figure was an entertaining setup, even if they pushed the whole 'Peter is still immature and wants to impress Tony in order prove he's a real Avenger' way too far. I even liked how it even made fun of your usual Spiderman clichés where Peter is mostly running through suburban neighborhoods instead of slinging around skyscrapers as usual. Like your friendly neighborhood Spiderman, so to speak.

It was also actually funny at times, the one moment I remember the most is the bank robbery by four gangsters wearing masks of The Avengers as Spidey casually intrudes, while in the background there was a poster advertising insurance against identity theft. It's something one can easily miss, but it did make the whole scene stand out to me a lot more. Though the movie does suffer when it comes to the memorability of the action scenes, the yacht scene had me mostly thinking about stopping the train in Spiderman 2 and how similar that was. The other stooges aside from The Vulture were forgettable, sadly.

There was also a post-credits scene where another one of those Captain America PSA videos starts playing, as Captain America starts lecturing the audience about the dangers of racemixing by using the movie itself as an example for how a dystopian America would look like. I thought it was rather weird and out of place, but it didn't detract from the movie too much.

He's your usual high school friend alright, though not to the point of being a irresponsible cringeworthy dunce, unless you get really hung up over minor background details. He suits the setting and tone of the movie without being overdone Generation Y-bait as is usually the case. There are a lot of things in the movie which I would have normally considered as blatant trying too hard, but surprisingly didn't. Partially, at least.

A Gothic ghost story I guess? Promising start . Ends in campy schlock horror.
Pity really, very beautiful to look at;

and the score was fabulous in parts.

Also, Dane DeHaan as the lead . . . not slighting his acting ability, its more that I find him "off-putting". He looks like he is in his teens and that voice, Jesus! Sounds like a female body-builder after too much androgen. Reminded me of trying to watch some the cast of Inception (2010)

Worth a look, though. Lots of "physical" horror, so be warned.
