It's because I'm such a pussy. I had to use a bottle of red wine to make it through the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I started to watch it when I was 17, but wussed out when they picked up that hitchhiker, because he was freaking me out. Finally watched it when I was 30 or something. The family dinner scene is my favourite.

I love horror and Texas Chainsaw freaks me out. A reoccurring dream I've had since childhood is leatherface chasing me down the neighborhood street.

It's gritty, and does a good job highlighting the desolation of rural texas (theme used by zombie in house of 1k corpses and devils rejects, to great effect); and our introduction to leatherface is excellent.

Now you gotta watch the TCM 2; it's more of a comedy. dennis hopper is hysterical.

What does being a fast and furious fan have to do with it? The last released fast furious, which was terrible and only one he did, was also the director of Beyond.

No. The last F&F, which was the worst of the lot, was directed by James Wan, writer/director of Saw.

Justin Lin was responsible for the interim entries which are widely considered to be the best. Lin is the director of Beyond, which is possibly the best of the reboot trilogy.

You should see it, it's really a fantastic piece of movie history. They literally captured a surreal nightmare on cellophane.

Seen at least most of TCM 2, I remember catching the radio station scene on TV late at night and hearing "they live on fear" that's been sampled by Skinny Puppy (I'm a fan of their music). The pelvic thrusts of Leatherface with the chainsaw is pretty crazy.

edit: Oh also, Adebisi's in it as NotChilds - unfortunately he's just as useless as NotMacready. Generic Black Buddy, goes "sheeeit" once and that's about it. The only comparable challenge to MEWMEW's authority comes from characters who are either cartoonishly villainous or categorically the motherfucking alien. Oh well.

Childs was dope. And let's all be honest... not one but TWO black dudes made it to the bitter end... the movie was ahead of it's time. It's a head of current times!

You also have your facts wrong. Lin did four entries in the series: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious (2009 reboot) Fast Five, Fast 6.

FF7 is dogshit, easily the worst of the series. You want to use that as a factoid to point out why Beyond is bad (which it isn't), it's better if you know what you're saying. Two different directors can easily offer two completely different quality levels of film. Being 'only one-off' has absolutely no relevance whatsoever.

It's a cheese fest that *knows* it's a cheese fest. It doesn't pretend to be anything else, and it's glorious for it. I defy anyone to watch that movie stem-to-stern and not smile or laugh good and hard at least once. The signage *alone* gets me every time.

The last "horror" that had any effect on me was probably the original Martyrs (2008) - Pascal Laugier; but the elicited feeling was more anger than horror, as it felt like Laugier was trying to abuse the viewer as much as his on screen characters. Powerful film though.

Action scenes range from reasonable and comprehensible (e.g. the grand final shootout in a convenient abandoned industrial building, long but with good pacing) to completely over the top (e.g. motorbike surfing), often succeeding at showing off characters (e.g. Xander Cage's peculiar way to repair a TV antenna) or technical excellence (e.g. Donnie Yen's gun-fu). Only a few are silly.

Characters are also nice; it's similar to The Expendables or Fast and Furious, but with angst-free good people. This is an advantage, because it focuses the narrative on how our heroes are going to kick ass, their raison d'être, rather than on fake "depth".

I like this maxim, and the analogy. Beyond spraypainting the turd itself, or dunking it in fluorescent paint, or rolling it in glitter... you could get the exact same shit, preceded by a stiff elbow to the jaw and faceplant DDT into the muck. It won't hit you right away, tbh you might even feel kinda good at first... but you've just been mugged and left facedown in the same old shit! (I call the last one "Force Awakener" :O )

Rewatched Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
Still as great as when I watched it at the cinema .
The movie is about the making of Nosferatu (1922), with the premise that the actor Max Schreck was really a vampire. Great acting by the complete cast really, but William Defoe & John Malkovich are outstanding.(Still) One of the best movies of the 2000s (and there aren't really that many in that decade) for me - if you haven't watched it, give it a try.
