I've released revision 3 of XOP Black, it now has another level (EX 2), and I'm pretty sure I finally axed the crash bug people were having. Took me a lot of effort to find it, trust me.

I've also moved all of the new features from XOP Black (Controller config, new scoring system, seperate highscores, etc.) back to the original XOP. Download it again if you want to check it out .. or if you really like the original XOP :P

XOP Black Revision 2 Changes

- Enemies can no longer collide with the player.
- Code for DAL coins seeking player improved.
- Increased difficulty of last boss and true last boss.
- Added Insane difficulty - only unlocked after completing XOP Black on skill Very Hard without using a continue.
- Changed graphics of some bullets.
- Added more variety to level 3/4 enemy movement.
- Extra life bonus now scales with skill level.
1 million at Easiest and increasing by 1 million for each higher skill level.
- Two Extra life bonuses added, instead of just one.

XOP Black Revision 3 Changes

- Increased difficulty of level 1.
- Added EX 2 level.
- Extra life bonus added for completing level 4 on wave 1.
- Changed graphics of some bullets.
- Level 3 miniboss shot reworked.
- Level 4 miniboss shot reworked.
- Increased difficulty of later levels on lower skill levels.
- Added individual highscore tables for Extra game modes (maniac, massacre, sludge).
- Score attack lives reduced to 10.

Does it run in fullscreen? Does it have option in commandline to run in window?

You can change to 560x600 windowed mode in the Options menu. You can save this setting but only after testing the resolution.

I love everything about the game except the following things

the music in stage 2 drives me insane.

And the fact that you have to clear both waves without continuing to get the "true form" of the final boss. That's a little much.

If you changed that stuff I would play this game on a regular basis.

Other than that I probably would pay money for something like this.

It's actually higher res than most low-res arcade games (400x300 instead of 320x240).

I've been working on another new EX level for XOP Black just for the hell of it . It has the dreaded walls everyone loved (coughcough) from the first XOP.

Also added a bonus feature .. there are blue portals hidden in the 4 main levels, running into them sends you to a bonus area where you blow up some guys for extra points .. of course they fire back at you! After 10 seconds you are sent back to the level, and all bullets on-screen turn into coins. Can be used to get a bit of a higher score if you time it right.

To Udderdude:
Here is a pair of replays of getting owned in your game's very hard mode, as requested:

Once again, congratulations and good work. This is a fine piece of software.

Thanks. The replays were cool. One thing about the bosses is if they have destroyable parts, you really need to blow them up .. or things get ugly later on.

Putting XOP/XOP Black into Tate might be possible, but it would end up cutting off some of the screen to the side. I'll have to do some research.

I am working on a final revision for XOP Black which will have an 8th level. Yay!

I like your weapon system a lot, it's simple but well balanced. I enjoy that without having to worry about powering up a ship and everything you still kill stuff at a reasonable rate and there's a good variety of popcorn and non-popcorn enemies. Let's you focus on dodging and scoring.

Nice pacing on the levels, great bullet patterns, and all this for free... Great work. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to see another XOP title but it's great to see you're still working on them.

Also, I've always liked the scanline art style for the games... It brings back the arcade feel. :D

Batsugun is teh pwn. IMO

Anyway, I'm planning to add some custom config file for XOP Black's display so you can screw around with it and set it up however you want. Think MAME screen config, except with text. No clue when it'll be done :p

XOP Black tate test : See if it actually works :P

Step 1. Download and unzip latest XOP Black
http://rydia.net/udder/prog/download/xopblack.zip

Step 2. Download Tate program
http://rydia.net/udder/prog/download/xopblack_tate.zip

Step 3. Unzip xopblack_tate.zip into the folder you unzipped xopblack.zip to. When it asks you to replace xopblack.exe, say YES PLZ :O

Step 4. Set monitor you want it running on to primary monitor (sorry, no way around this, Allegro sucks ...)

Step 5. Run tate1.bat for 640x480, tate2.bat for 800x600.

I just played through the first loop, got the 1cc.. it crashed on the second loop though. I'm pretty impressed with the game, good job! I would have liked a powerup system however, the whole time I felt just kinda powerful, not super-powerful. I will definately play this again, it was fun.

I just grabbed the latest and played for the first time. I remember enjoying the original XOP but this kicks its ass. And mine. :) I'm thinking about starting a shmup of my own and this is awfully motivational. If I do get it together to find time to do so it'll likely take me a while to get my skills up, but... well, it's always going to be in the back of my mind if I don't dig in and start coding my dream game. But that's for another topic down the road...

First time through, I played on Hard, died on the second level. But I blame the awesome soundtrack for disrupting my concentration. I know, I know, no excuses, get back to the game...

Mmm... tate. I'll give that a try... :)

Keep in mind Tim wrote almost all of the music for XOP Black.

Absolutely awesome game! I love the resolution and the music. The nonstop random bullet patterns give me a headache on very hard, but in a good way! :D
Thanks very much for this, will post some scores the next days.
