While you're waiting...

Post by Aggrav8d »

Some weeks ago I was in here boasting about a hot new shmup i'm writing called Shoot Shoot, Bang Bang. I promised the next version (v0.6.0) would be released with a full level.

As it stands I'm still looking for a level designer / graphic artist to design said level. The code for v0.6.0 and 0.7.0 is all done and ready to go but a promise is a promise.

So in the meantime I've knocked this little gem together in about 24hrs which I hope you will find briefly entertaining. I find it's perfect when I just want a 2 minute break from the drudgery of real work.
Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

ciao!

Download Surrounded for windows (this link will show the latest version all the time, and the latest release includes a link to a page that will let you know if you need to get an update.)

Thanks!

I think I should add some kind of unstoppable, slowly moving death ray to force the player to move around a bit. as it is you can sit & spin for a very long time. I also think that preventing enemies from overlapping would be a good idea - sometimes you can shoot a blue guy (they only take 1 hit) but it doesn't die, i suspect this is because there are two overlapping.

Can you actually move about?

I like the way it feels relatively easy to cause a shitload of destruction :)

maybe it'd be better if you could move around in a small circle about a quater the size of the screen like in tempest, but still allowed to shoot anywhere... I dunno, as long as its not full x and y movment all over the screen as that'd be too much like asteroids...

and possibly within that circle of movement you could have stuff you need to defend lol *shrug*

Moved thread to the new dedicated Shmup Development board.

Leaving a shadow link in place on Shmups Chat for the time being for those who may not have noticed our latest board addition yet :)

ftp://ftp.marginallyclever.com/pub/surr ... -0.1.0.exe

- speeds change a bit
- "beam of death" forces you to dodge from time to time
- win32 installer to look (slightly) more professional
- ESDF, arrow keys for moving the ship

This game is released as freeware so feel free to give copies to anyone you like. I'm always eager for suggestions on how I could improve this game.

The beam of death doesn't always kill you and the game could use a custom icon, those will be fixed in the next version.

You might want to work on that Uninstaller a bit. It deleted my Programs menu completely. Just the shortcuts and icons, but still.

Thanks, Ghegs, for the heads up. My installer was a bit too sloppy when it tried to delete the startup menu folder for the game. It's been fixed now.

Just updated to v0.2.0
- fixed beam of death (much more deadlicious now)
- monsters no longer overlap (looks like there's more, but there ain't)
- heartbeat now speeds up as monsters get closer (more effective, imho)
- volume can be controlled from the current.cfg file

I can't move the window of the game, which is really annoying, because of this I can't see the bottom of the screen

otherwise, lovely game ! :)

Yeah, it's some crazy SDL B.S. that fails to properly position the window. The only workaround I have is close the app and restart. Alternately you can run it fullscreen by editing current.cfg

Incidentally I updated the win32 and linux versions to include a play again button, for those of you that wanted it. the mac version always lags behind because I don't own a mac. :(
