Konbo arcade cafe, Edinburgh

Post by JackieHarris »

Figured I'd start a proper thread about this now that we're open!

Konbo is a Japanese arcade inspired cafe in Edinburgh. We have candy cabs running a range of games (all original PCBs, of course) in a pleasant cafe environment, with good quality coffee & locally sourced pastries, cakes, plus some Japanese sodas and snacks. 2 Blasts, 2 NACs, 2 Astros, imported stools and a mix of vintage and repro arcade art.

We just opened this past weekend, and we've had a great response so far. A nice mix of casual and hardcore gamers, all different ages, plus people just coming in for a quiet coffee and a cake :)

We've got a dedicated vertical cab, so there's always at least 1 shmup running (we'll try to get a hori one on the go at the same time where we can).

Please come visit us if you're in the area. There's a full list of games, plus opening hours, directions, etc. on the website: http://www.konbo.co.uk

Here's some photos for now:

went along today for a couple of hours and it was very good .nice clean setup with everything working nice and ketsui was on so i was happy .the vertical blast city is optimum with a buttery smooth seimitsu with a short throw(i guess this is the ls-56 from how ive heard it described by people in the past) and already i think i prefer it to the ls-32s i'm used to.4 credits for a quid is great value and the fact you get 4 tokens means you can have 4 goes on different machines rather than sticking a quid in and ending up leaving credits that you can't be arsed to play(this was a common thing in casino)
will be back soon.. peoples should probably use this thread to let other local shooter players(if there are any  ) know when they might be popping in.

Been in a few times this week and had a blast on DDP DOJ, G Darius, Third Strike, New Zealand Story and SF2ST and now Ketsui's installed. Should be heading up for a few hours tomorrow. Great place with plenty of games that seem to get rotated very frequently. Good to meet some folks that are into their STGs and fighters too.

Great value and amazing games, friendly staff too. The Japanese snacks and drinks are a nice touch too.

Thanks for the nice comments! :)

We're getting some dedicated shmup players coming in regularly, and our high score table is picking up. DKA paid us a visit today and gave us our first on-site 1CC (DDP DOJ) which was pretty exciting! :D

We're trying to always have 1 vertical & 1 horizontal shmup going at the same time. Should be a double CAVE setup of DOJ and Progear tomorrow if anyone's interested.

Looks fantastic. It exactly the right type of place for a modern arcade. Clean, great cabs, sticks etc. Next time I'm up in Edinburgh I'll certainly drop by.

I wish something like this would open in central London. I remember talking to the owner if Casino about turning it into a cafe before it closed down.

We're running an inter-cafe scoring competition next week between ourselves and Bobble Cafe in Lille, France. Blazing Star is the game, 1 week of scoring, prizes for local & overall winners:

This is the first shmup event we've run, so hopefully there's some interest! I'd really like to run a dedicated shmup night sometime - it's just a matter of whether there'd be enough demand for it.

I'm gonna try to head up for a bit this weekend to improve my Blazing Star score.

A shmup night would be great and the Thursday Fight nights have been popular so far. You could always mix in a couple of the more popular fighters to cater for everyone.

Nice to hear there's a bit of interest for a shmup night! It's on the 'to do' list ;)

Meantime, our scoring competition with Bobble Cafe went well, so we've got another one lined up later this month with Sugoi arcade in Finland! This time Ketsui is the game. Sounds like Sugoi have higher local scores than us, so this could be a challenge.
