Any shmuppers in the NYC (Manhattan) region?

Post by Strikers1945guy »

I believe Manhatten is the area I should be asking lol. I'm canadian but will be travelling to NYC in late October for 3 days to go see a concert. I figured on going a day or two before the show to sight see as I've never been to New York before. Not exactly sure where I'll be staying hotel wise yet but I'm landing at the LaGuardia airport and the concert is at the Beacon Theater so around that area if that gives any indication on where I'll be.

If anyone is walking / bus route around that area I'd be more than happy to meet up if there's a local arcade anywhere or if anyone has a cab setup we could play on and grab some food or whatever is cool :)

Not sure how much customs would bother me bringing a PCB with me if I found someone with a cab I do have some awesome cave pcbs you could pic from and I could bring 1 if the opportunity arises.

Cheers !

I'm down. What dates will you be here?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Land around noon October 21. Concert is like 7pm Oct. 22, Go home late flight next day. So I could meet any day really. Day I arrive after like 2pm, Next day until maybe 5pm? (its all seating so I don't need to be early), Or before I have to catch my flight the next day.

Any local arcades? :) Or do you have a cab?

The pcb/jamma/supergun scene is a bit too rich for my blood at the moment. That said we have do have a few places we can meet up, have a few beers, and play some games. Don't expect much in the way of shmups, but the selection is still pretty good.

We will probably wind up one at either http://barcadestmarks.com/games/ or its counterpart across town.

You can check the other location out here: http://barcadenewyork.com/games/

I'm partial to the St. Marks location since they have Gyruss, Prehistoric Isle 2, and Daioh in the way of shooters.

However it is also worth mentioning that the food at the 2nd location is far superior.

They are both easy to get to, so perhaps I will leave the decision to you:D

As far as what day we do this I am open. I get out of work at 2:25 on those days and should be able to be in the area by 3:30.

Anyone else from the area want to chime in?

Gyruss & Diaoh are awesome ! I'm not big into fighting games, but I do love some racing / Music / pinball stuff as well for sure :)

Back home there's 1 arcade in my whole city and the only shooter they have is a small cab running a Strikers 1945 board and the monitor has horrible screen burn, so anything we do would be awesome. I'm down either day. The day i arrive would be awesome since I don't have to be anywhere the entire evening, so going to an arcade and then getting some beers & food would be cool. Next night I have to be at the beacon theater by like 6pm or so, so we would be rushed. I should land in BYC around noon and then bus it / cab it to whatever hotel I manage to find for as cheap as possible... hotels aren't cheap around there! They do have hostels but I've never gone that route before. Might go for that, I wont be travelling with anything more than a backpack so I wouldn't be worried about leaving stuff in the shared room when Im not there as I wont have anything to leave lol.

Anyone else from the area want to join?

Lets do this the 1st day you are here then.

Since you like pinball too I have just the plan: We will start at Barcade St. Marks and then head downtown to Two-Bit retro arcade for some more games and pinball. It is a 15 minute walk.

In between Barcade and Two-Bit we will stop at Video Games NY and 8 Bit and Up. As well as grab something to eat.

To confirm: Wednesday October 21st. 3:30/4 at Barcade St. Marks

And yes who else wants to join?

You should post in this thread, Strikers! http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=55012

I'll be down for Barcade and a bite to eat. Not sure I'll be grabbing much from either VGNY or 8bit. Unsure yet if I'll be able to come to Two-Bit, either, but I'll try.

Sorry for the double post, but there are also other pinball places in Manhattan. There's modern pinball which has a huge selection of machines up on 26th and 3rd - technically walkable, though a quick $2.75 train ride would be easier. Or a bus ride up.

Sorry for the late reply. Air Canada changed my flight and when i called to ask what the hell was up I got a run around. My original layover had me in Toronto for like an hour. They changed the second flight and my layover was like 4 hours so I wouldn't be getting into NY until really late Wednesday night.

They wouldn't give me an explanation but offered to let me fly Thursday morning at a much better flight and better seat than what I paid for so I took it. As long as I get there for the show. My Hostel was able to not charge me penalty for changing my 2 nights to 1 so that worked out.

But yeah, sorry fellow shmup people, we will have to do this another time. Take care !

After many text messages:D this is now back on at a different location:

Come out if you're around. Look for a pair of crutches.
