Brooklyn Mini-Meetup

Post by chronicdog »

I would consider meeting up with a few players to talk shop and play a few games. Id say we could goto Barcade (http://barcadebrooklyn.com/) but their focus is on the 1980s arcade scene.

I have an apt we could do it in, but it would have to be strictly limited to 6-8 people. I have a bunch of arcade sticks (couple good ones rest kinda just OK), pretty much every system sans current gen, a 20" Sony WEGA CRT, a 42" plasma, and a nice ASUS 144hz LCD monitor which is TATE-able. For MAME stuff I mostly use my Ouya but it seems some of my roms arent working, maybe one of you could help me with that. I have a Windows HTPC machine I could install it to. We could also live-stream it to Twitch with an Elegato I recently picked up, and Im sure some clips and hijinx will end up on youtube.

I have a bunch of import 360 games like the standard Cave stuff, Otomedius, Akai Katana etc, a couple rare games like Border Down on Dreamcast, some interesting Wii virtual console stuff, and a pretty healthy collection of NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS2 games including Gradius V. You guys could bring whatever you want to.

I can provide the coors light and snacks. Ive never been to one of these meetups, but I host poker games all the time so Im used to having a decent sized group over. Im in Williamsburg.

The plan would be, we each take turns playing through one game we are pretty good at, showing some tips on how to play it and basic strategy. Im thinking 3-5 hours is probably good but I probably wont make any other plans for the evening and Im generally a night person if a few of you wanted to stay late and play some other stuff like Donkey Kong on MAME or Street Fighter II HD Remix or whatever. Just an evening of having fun and meeting some local players.

Im thinking this would be on a Saturday in December. Reply below if this sounds relevant to your interests.

I'm down if this is still on the table.

I have some DC stuff I can bring - Under Defeat, Mars Matrix, Sturmwind, and Zero Gunner 2. Or we can meet up at Barcade.

Let me know.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

OK lets try to get a couple more players, I dont have any specific timetable for doing it so lets see if we can get anyone else.

Im in the process of finishing a retro gaming A/V cart, which has a tate-able CRT, should be finished in a week or two.

I have an Xarcade which works with my Dreamcast but I know its not ideal for STGs, although Im used to it. My other sticks are all for PC/360. Just got a few new 360 imports too ^_^

Im also a big fan of run n gun games, namely Metal Slug, 8 and 16bit Contra games, and Hardcorps Uprising.

Wish Barcade had more shooters! Maybe we can meet there and walk to my place, its close by.

Im still game to do this, I guess its gonna be two of us. On the plus side, I got a couple imports for 360 by Qute.

Wednesday nights are best for me, but a Fri/Sat/Sun night could work.

Hey man,

I'm still down. Weekends are definitely better. The next two weekends are good, the weekend of the 28th is no good. A weekend in March would also work.

I'd be down for this. I do a lot of fighting games myself but I'd be down to play shumps for sure. :)

Hey Sabin!

Are you active in the fighting game community here? I have a good friend who runs the 8 Bit Dojo Sunday nights at 8 Bit and Up. People come down and they play fighting games for a few hours.

Weather is getting nice gents. We should do this soon!

Some light entertainment, and also I wonna get this shit off my chest...

So, I got invited to NYC, they've booked all my return flight and accommodation already without asking my full name :!:
Example: in my trade they know me as Chef CHI... you don't start planning/booking things using that title and not asking a simple question... what's your full name Chef :?:
So, I've been trying fruitlessly wasting my time calling back and forth to the US airlines correcting my name on the ticket cos it doesn't match the name on my passport :!:

Anyways it's all sorted now, from calling to Virgin Atlantic, to Expedia UK, to Expedia US, waiting for them to call Virgin Atlantic, then more waiting for them to call Delta Airlines, and then more waiting for my payment to go through... what a fucking drama, I could've made a film out of this

 Back on topic

Good news: I'll be at the Eventi Hotel on the 7th May...
Bad news: I'll be leaving on the 10th...
Possibility: depending on my performance, they might extend my stay, which i doubt after a simple mistake :!:

Please PM me your contact number if we could hang-out for a drink and play some shmups during 7th-9th May, evenings of course
PS: First timer in NYC

Regards, CHI

Edit:
My bad, 7th-9th May, I'm leaving on the 10th

That sounds good CHI.

I'm not sure what time you're getting here Thursday, but I'm free:

Thursday evening
Friday night after the Ranger's game
Saturday afternoon

We can hit up Barcade on St. Marks or Two Bit for beer and games. If you're interested depending on when we meet we can also visit Video Games NY and 8 Bit and Up.

Check your PM's.

Anyone else want in?

^Great stuff :P

Your number has been saved...
As mentioned before, most likely I'll be free in the evenings say 6pm onwards...
Mornings and afternoons I'll be busy with meetings and prepping, don't ask :!:
I know someone who lives in Brooklyn, I'll try and drag him out for a night or two...

Due to my short stay, I'd probably do some sight seeing before I head back to London

Ok something has come up, I might need to extend my stay...
I need some help on recommendations for accommodations/hostels or even your sofa
I've figured might as well stay a bit longer while I'm there, an extra 5 days that is...
Your help will be much appreciated...

Sadly I don't have the required room to house guests at my current residence. Hopefully I'll have a bigger place in the future.

I did a little research for you:

http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/New-York/USA/Reviews

I haven't stayed at any hostels here, but a bunch are well reviewed.

Also you might want to try Air bnb:

https://www.airbnb.com/

I have used airbnb, it was a good experience. I would suggest searching Jersey City on Air Bnb. It is a quick train ride to Manhattan and the rental prices are much cheaper. Good luck!

I just realized, any connection with TS Sabin or is the name a coincidence?

I haven't played shmups anymore but I'm in Queens and could come down since I've missed CHI several times in London :P Can't really help with accommodation since I'm in AirBNB :(

A big shout-out to Stevens for putting-up with me... Even though we did not get the chance to meet but I managed to keep in contact with... Long story short, the company who invited me over managed to fit everything in the days I was there, basically not giving me a day-off!

Stevens, I'll make-it up to you on my next visit, watch this space, I will be back...

There's also a Barcade in Chelsea that has different cabs (notable 4-player Simpsons and X-Men cabs). I prefer St. Marks because it's 5 minutes from my house, but Chelsea's worth a trip every once in a while.

Wish I had seen this thread earlier. I would have loved to come out for beer and games!
