Show your Tate setup thats not a cab or arcade machine
Finally got my gamesroom up and running!
In the background you'll see 2 monitors sitting on the table in tate.
The one on the left is a Viewsonic 21" SVGA which I use for Dreamcast.
The one on the right I'm pretty proud of. It's an old 21" Quintrix TV that myself and a friend gutted, and replace the chassis with one from Jomac. You take a few yoke and resistance measurements from any tube, and he'll send you a matching chassis to go with it. Instant low-res RGB monitor conversion!
The picture is absolutely amazing. We just made a simple RGB plus sync and ground connector at the back (as well as point for mono audio to the unit's speaker from a JAMMA board).
I use that beast for everything low res. I pump real gameboards through it (direct connect via RGB), AdvanceMAME on Linux (the best and only way to play MAME), as well as various consoles such as my PSX and PS2 with a simple RGB/SCART hack.
When I get time I'll take a better shot of the two in action, and hopefully by then I'll have my custom joysticks all finished up too!
[edit]
Oh yeah, the other cabs are:
* Generic LAI (Leasure and Allied Industries - cab builders here in Australia in the 80's and 90's for most official game redistribution in AU) 26" Lowboy cab
* Scratchbuilt cocktail MAME cab
* Megalo City 29" candy (cheaper Shenzhen knockoff of the Sega Vs City, but only 1 side with 2P controls)
* Scratchbuild upright MAME cab
http://benchmark.mameworld.net/cab1/
Coming soon with be a 1/2 scale "kiddies cab" for my 6 year old, complete with some ultra-cute Sanwa heart and star shaped buttons I found for her. She's not a shmupper however, but I'll change that!

Nope, but I have a pic of me running MMPork through a Presenter SCART>VGA upscaler and a Trust Televiewer scan convertor, at 800x600 resolution.Geezer wrote:Does anyone have pics showing a PS2 or Supergun running via XRGB on an LCD/TFT?
Supergun is a MAK, monitor is a five-year old 15in LG Flatron RZ-15LA31 TFT, which is both VGA and SCART/SVHS compliant, and was chosen mainly for it's flat sides (as a lot of monitors have rounded sides or mounted speakers). Thinking of bagging a 20in Apple Cinema Display for £350 and seeing what it can do.
The same setup with Guwange in MAME, with a Hori RAP1 v1.
Does it look good with no scanlines? Does the presenter work with other odd sync rates (or only 60hz games)? Just wondering if this is a good alternative to an XRGB2 for pcb upscanning. Sorry if I already asked you this before...I forget easily.Icarus wrote:Nope, but I have a pic of me running MMPork through a Presenter SCART>VGA upscaler and a Trust Televiewer scan convertor, at 800x600 resolution.
The apple cinema is 16:9 right? If you are sticking with a a pc lcd, might as well get a 4:3 20" version like the dell ultrasharp 200FP with rotating stand (BIN on ebay for $179US).Icarus wrote:Thinking of bagging a 20in Apple Cinema Display for £350 and seeing what it can do.

I've got this stupid idea to build an LCD based cab (ala viewlix).GaijinPunch wrote:But the question must be begged, Dave, why would some w/ a number of cabs be bothered w/ an upscaler?
I also would have thought two boxes would introduce a bit of a delay in the signal.Geezer wrote:Icarus, isn't it easier to just use an XRGB than send the signal through two boxes?
Here's mine - one day I'll get a real man-sized chair:
http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh55 ... esetup.jpg
Actually, usually I have a box where the PS3 is (the one on the floor, not the one on the side), and pop a stick on top of that, and then the small chair is perfect, and surprisingly comfortable.
Supergun to add to the collection this week. That's an old LG TV, and I tate back and forth all the time with no problems...

Works fine. The Presenter unit is kind of like an XRGB on a budget, and it works with every PCB I've thrown at it so far - Cave, prototype Konami GX, Raizing, Capcom ZN-1...Dave_K. wrote:Does it look good with no scanlines? Need something I can plug into my Mac as well.Dave_K. wrote:The apple cinema is 16:9 right? None of those Dell monitors on UK eBay either. Shipping will be a bitch...
It's sent through two boxes for video capturing - the VGA signal needs to be processed into composite, otherwise my capture card won't read it.Geezer wrote:Icarus, isn't it easier to just use an XRGB than send the signal through two boxes?
Picture is sharp as hell both with and without the second box, by the way.
Don't care for an XRGB, also. This works with my existing setup.

I just set this up tonight.
Gateway EV700 17" CRT that I just remembered I had laying around. Right now it's just connected to a laptop running MAME, but I'll be hooking up my DC when the VGA box arrives in a couple days.
What's weird is that even though vertically it's about the same screen size as the 20" TV right next to this setup, it looks a whole hell of a lot better on the monitor. Maybe it's just because I'm sitting right there in front of it instead of a few feet back, maybe it's just because the monitor looks better anyway since it's VGA (duh), but there's a huge difference in clarity.
The monitor itself has no discoloration while it's on its side, even when it's on for a few hours. From what I understand these monitors are pretty easy to pick up for cheap now, so it's not a bad pick if you happen to come across one.

Apple Cinema Displays are just rebadged Panasonic LCDs. Ditto for all of Dell's higher end displays.Icarus wrote:Thinking of bagging a 20in Apple Cinema Display for £350 and seeing what it can do.
Do yourself a favor and grab a Panasonic LCD from a local PC retailer, and save yourself a few hundred bucks if you don't need the Apple logo staring back at you.
Literally, just some snap-in Sanwa buttons and matching violet ball-top.P_HAT wrote:what parts you used to mod stick?
My new Semitsu custom stick should be arriving soon. If I like it, I'll probably sell the HRAP (I paid enough for the damn thing, so there's no point it sitting around gathering dust). I do really like the HRAP, but want to experiment with a Semitsu.
Heh, i'm thinking about semitsu stick.RGC wrote:Literally, just some snap-in Sanwa buttons and matching violet ball-top.P_HAT wrote:what parts you used to mod stick?

Sanwa stick cool for GGAC and VF4, but in shmups =\
P.S. I spend 186$ for hrap2... 120 for stick + shiping but, i think ti was worth money
Yeah, it sucks, I spent around $210 inc. shipping from the US westcoast to UK.P_HAT wrote: P.S. I spend 186$ for hrap2... 120 for stick + shiping but, i think ti was worth money
In all fairness though, I noticed an instant improvement in my shooting ability over that with my previous stick (HoriFS2) - maybe I was just trying "200 dollars harder". Either way, it worked.
The Semitsu sounds better for twitch precision movements since it's meant to have a shorter throw. I'll find out soon enough - just waiting for thisto arrive.
Oh, geez. I want one like that!RGC wrote:just waiting for thisto arrive.
Anyway, nice to see all of the tate setups. My TV has a sloped case so I can't tate it, but I hope to eventually pick up something tateable at a pawn shop.
Speaking of which, does anybody know of a place that sells a LCD TV wall-mount that rotates? I don't know if such a thing exists, but it would be nice to have if it does.

Where did you find a place to deliver an HRAP2 to the UK? And how about the custom Seimitsu? Have I got the Seimitsu spelling correct there?
Amazing custom by the way.

The custom stick is courtesy of Kaytrim's Kustoms, and the HRAP I picked up on ebay about 6 months ago.spadgy wrote: RGC,

Have you tried? A sloped case may work out better, because the TV slants back slightly rather than being straight on.MR_Soren wrote:Anyway, nice to see all of the tate setups. My TV has a sloped case so I can't tate it, but I hope to eventually pick up something tateable at a pawn shop.
Also, if you want to try seimitsu, why not just stick it in the HRAP?

Eh, wife would kill me if I try that before we get a new TV, and I think it's sloped enough that I'd have to cobble something together to support it at a comfortable angle. It's a junk wal-mart model from Phillips and I doubt the internal components are mounted well.ReKleSS wrote:Have you tried? I liked that custom stick because it was very pretty. I've taken a liking to the Mushi-chick (Reco?) after recently seeing the soundtrack figurine. I don't want to muck about in my HRAP while it's my only stick, but I have been looking at the parts on lizardlick a lot. Maybe I will. Figure it's a cheap way to experience the difference.

flip that tv on its side with a book underneath, and throw a seimitsu stick in the HRAP and get shootin!
