PS2 Vgaboxes and laptops

Post by Randorama »

Ok, hoping that this topic has never been covered , is it possible to use my laptop to use the PS2 vga adapters like these ones? I acually use a standard PC monitor instead of the laptop's LCD, so the video signal should be like PS2->laptop->monitor. Beside that, is it actually worth 50 bucks?
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

What you link to there are upscan converters. They take a 15KHz signal (suitable for your average TV) and double-scan it up to 31KHz (suitable for a VGA monitor). They output a 31KHz RGB signal that is designed to be plugged directly into a monitor.

If your laptop has some sort of VGA-in, then these will work. If not, then you're better off with some sort of TV-capture device. Do be warned however that a lot of these units (particularly the cheap USB versions) have noticable lag which will affect gameplay. Do your research before buying these sorts of devices.

FYI, outside of the Hori upscan converter pictured, the rest do a crappy job at best. XRGB2 series of upscanners are best, next best is anything that upscans using component input (like the Hori one), the rest are just crap.

Also to agree with elvis, you don't want to go the capture method to display on your laptop because of the lag. Just go straight to the VGA monitor if thats what you use with your laptop anyway.
