TurboGrafx-16 RGB to component out board

Post by HuKaos »

Hi all,

I have a board I assembled from console5 years back and have since revisited the project. I believe I did not understand fully what the board could do and thought that RGB would work for component YpbPr but I have found it doesn’t.

I made a harness and connector that has stereo l/r and RGB all in one that replaces the rf module on the side of the tg16 unit so you can plug it in and disconnect it and maintain a factory appearance.

So, I’m trying to find out how I can go about getting the RGB signal converted to a component signal so that a modern lcd panel tv can use it.

The board has RGB connected from the correct pins on the TG-16 but only audio works no video. Sync on this board is handled by the board.

This is the board I have: https://console5.com/store/nec-turbo-gr ... b-kit.html

I was thinking of adding composite to it was well but for now I’m just trying to get a usable video signal from the unit. It has been verified to work prior to the mod and does with composite, just not component YpbPr.

Any suggestions of hardware or conversion boards I could fit inside the tg-16 or plug into after the fact would be helpful.

So you're really just looking for the most compact form factor possible, right?

I've seen these around, but you'd have to do some cutting and this might not be ideal for you:

That's the smallest one I can think of off the top of my head, aside from using a HD RetroVision cable w/ a TG-16 adapter on it.

Oh wow I never saw something like this before. So currently I've got a clever little port that has RGB and stereo LR in one cable coming out the side. If I have to get an external box to convert the RGB to component that's fine, but this I may have to look closer at, and see if I could cram that into my TG-16 and take the RGB output from the one board I have currently and feed that along with sync into this one and then output that via my clever port on the side.

If you are fine with an external box there are plenty of transcoders out there - most of which use either SCART or VGA as the input connector

I am ok with using an external box to convert the RGB to component but I think I could take this board you mentioned and de-solder the RGB RCA connectors and run them to the port I soldered in my TG-16 in place of the RF adapter and use my harness to output to component. Instead of drilling holes to fit the RGB RCA ports on that board.

Live and learn in this instance as I made the assumption that RGB was the same as component and in this instance it isn't.

Most of the external transcoder boxes seem to not mention RGB to component so I'd be leery of that, especially since this board I have in place currently handles sync on it's own and doesn't use the sync pin from the TG-16 board.

I'm gonna have to ask the seller of that board for the dimensions, I think it will fit in place of where the RF module was.

Below are some photos of the TG-16 and it's current RGB board along with the connector and harness for RGB and stereo l/r out

I'm also thinking of possibly taking the composite video out and wiring that up to the green output as well but don't want to backfeed the signal so thinking of putting a diode inline as to not allow for that. Probably no necessary if I'm going through all the trouble but since I've got this whole thing open why not, just not sure if that will honestly work but I will give it a whirl and see what happens.

I did find this while researching the possibility of adding composite to the green rca.

It may help folks to understand some of the differences of rgb, including myself.

https://thecablesland.com/ypbpr-vs-rgb/

There is a portion in the above link that references

“ Sync on Green, RGsB, SoG or Sync on G
In this method, the wire that transports the green signal is overlaid with the composite sync signal.”

So I’m not sure if connecting the sync cable from the TG-16 to the green output would get this all to work or not but based on the above it sounds like it should.

Placed an order for
https://www.tindie.com/products/retroni ... s-adapter/

Going to be adding that to the TG-16 this weekend, it's a small enough board to fit inside the case and still utilize the connector I have in place of the old RF box. I'll post some pics when it's done.
