Philips/mag PR1920 .... RGB Complete

Post by deezdrama »

My nephew brought me a little philips magnavox 19" smart series crt from work. RF only on back. Composite on front. Made in 1999, has a samsung tube.

I cant find any info on if someones rgb modded one of these and cannot find a service manual.

Micro controller SAA5543PS
Jungle TDA8846

Anyone know if this can be rgb modded?

UPDATE.... Mux Mod Complete...

TDA8846 should be RGB moddable. Sometimes the ext RGB inputs are disabled but this can be overcome with I2C interception.

A lot of the time the OSD doesn’t even use the jungle RGB inputs with these chips so you don’t even have to worry about mixing OSD.

Awesome to hear although my head isnt fully wrapped around the mod yet as Ive never done one but have rgb modded several nintendos, recapped several consoles and recapped an entire 27" sony consumer crt recently which was not fun lol, so Im just trying to wrap my head around everything before I proceed.

I have pinout diagrams for the chips, most of these mods ive seen inject the signals at jumpers on the board or somewhere inbetween the micon and jungle, then feed 5v through YS. This is my very basic understanding.
Not sure what I2C interception is or what you mean by not having to mix osd.
Sorry, im sure I sound like an idiot but this is my first go at this and hope to learn what I need to know from doing this mod. Ive read a little about muxing methods but going to keep this first attempt simple.

I need to order 75ohm resistors (what wattage rating should I get or does it not really matter)

I will be using mister fpga and already have alot of bnc cables so will be using female bnc connections on the back of the tv, i guess i will need a bnc to rca adapter for sync.

What type of switch will i need?

Again.... Sorry for all the questions and my ignorance with this mod... i appreciate the help!

For TDA884x jungles the blanking voltage is between 1.0V and 3.0V

So Ive found and labeled in this pic a lower set of jumpers carrying r,g,b,blanking from the micon....
And above it is also a set of jumper resistors carrying the signals.

https://ibb.co/Lrxb0F7

Would one of these spots be a good place to cut and jack in my rgb signal?

Would doing so negate the need to add .1uf caps since there is surface caps on the traces right before the jungle?

You mention the OSD may not use rgb on the jungle for the menu... So do i not need to worry about connecting wires back to the micon? All i need to do is splice in my rgb and put blanking on a switch?

You also mention the blanking needing 1-3v .... Would I just take 5v from the board and lower voltage with a resistor or do I need a buck convertor?

Sorry for all the questions, I can recap a crt or console or install mods no problems but Im not great with schematics or electronics functions so been trying to wrap my head around this and every article or vid seems to use a different method.

If you don’t have a schematic I suggest you get your micom and jungle data sheets and document the circuits by beeping out the micom RGB and Blanking out circuit and the jungle’s RGB and blanking in circuits.

If the micom RGB out circuit doesn’t intersect with the jungle RGB in circuits you don’t have to worry about it. If instead the two circuits intersect you will need to look at doing an RGB Mux

Wow...So there was a service manual, google seems to only want to sell me shit and not give me the results for what I typed in, I should of searched manualslib directly...

I took both the micon and Jungle lines from the schematics and spliced them together in photoshop and color coded everything...
Image

So they do directly connect, and I know what all resistors and caps are on the lines.... but I do not know what any of it means other than there is a direct path LOL.
Sorry I dropped out of electronics class lol.

I have 2 easy access points to inject RGB signal, at jumpers or at resistor jumpers...
Image

I have no idea if resistors/caps need to be added or removed from the circuits if I cut and splice in at either of those points.

Ive seen people using SPDT switches for blanking and seen people use 4PDT .... Im assuming 4PDT is the way to go that way I can see OSD when I need to?

4PDT are used by people who don't know what they are doing.

This is a straightforward OSD mux mod. I'll give you a bit more detail when I have time. Will only need a on/off switch for blanking.

Sounds good, I was going to cut jumpers and run everything to a 4pdt switch and take a 5v from board and half it with resistors.... Ill wait untill you have time to explain the mux method as Im sure its a better way.
I appreciate it!

Looking at your diagram and the photo, the part numbers don't match (as far as I can tell).

If you can make up a diagram from your actual set with the correct parts and numbers I'll design the mod for you.

oh crap, The service manual I found is for the PR1902 C125 and mine is the PR1920 C125. Either I had a dyslexic moment or the model number is so close I didnt notice.

Let me look for the right one, sorry

So manually searching manualib I found the PR1920 C125 model number and it gave a link for the service manual for this chassis board...
The right components this time lol, sorry

The first thing I note is that header 0219 is a text port with RGB FB and Ground....That's where I'd be connecting my external RGB.

See if you can find resistors 3639, 3640, 3641 and 3642 on the TV board.

3639, 3640, 3641 and 3642 are directly below those jumper resistors that are next to micon on top of board.

Please measure resistance from the RGB pins on port 0219 to the legs of capacitors 2223, 2224 and 2225 farthest from jungle. (Hopefully dead short 0 ohms)

.3 to .4 ohm red to red etc

Also theres jumpers right before caps going into jungle

I traced the blanking ... It looks like it enters pin 26 RGBIN on the jungle but when I first asked about this consumer set on reddit someone sent me these pics and show pin 22 BCLIN as blanking on jungle.
Now im confused.
