PS4 Astro City

Post by Trevor spencer »

Hi

Has anyone had any luck putting a PS4 into a 15khz cab ?

I'm thinking PS4 - HDMI to VGA converter - UVC - Brook PS2 to PS4 converter plus project box for controls.

Just curious if anyone else has done this before.

Thanks

The main problem is your resizing from 16:9 to 4:3. Either you take a secondary scaler in between that let's you choose your exact screen area and output that to an older 15khz converter like the UVC.

Or you can use the Retrotink 5X which allows you to input 720p and output 240p from that by just utilizing the inner 4:3 area.

OK I never thought of that , I'm using a 360 in there at the moment but that can display 4.3

That's right. The PS4 can't, so 720p in 16:9 is your minimum output.

If you were OK with 480i in 15khz, you could use an Extron VSC. Those allow you to input 16:9 and resize and zoom and mask directly during the conversion to 15khz.

For 240p output that won't work. Then you need that secondary scaler or the Retrotink.

Does sound like quite a faff but I'm still quite intrigued. I do have a OSSC knocking around so that should work.

I believe the non-Pro PS4 can also do 480p, but not sure about 480i.

Having a PS4 in an arcade cabinet would be pretty cool with all the indie retro-style games and emulated stuff, and most of the emulated vertical shmups have tate as well I believe. I think most of them will let you stretch out the image to fill the screen, so you could output to a 4:3 monitor and not have sidebars, but some games like the 8-bit style Gunvolt game have status stuff on the sides and won't let you stretch the image.

Yes PS4 can output at 480p with a PS4 and PS4 Slim.

You should try PS4 -> HDMI -> HDMI to VGA -> UVC.

There are great shmups on PS4 btw:

Ketsui
Esparde
Battle Garegga Rev 2016
Ikaruga
Psyvariar Delta
Raiden V
Vasara
Sisters Royale

I did try that but it didn't work just like Fudoh said , the UVC was saying it was 1024x768 due to the 16.9 res I presume (720x480 not 640x480.)

I think the only ways are like Fudoh suggested which is a shame would be nice if someone designed a cut down version of the retro tink 5x with just downscaling and a all in one enclosure with controller support for PS4-Xbox One-Switch.

I can only dream.

The PS4 Pro can also do 480p, but only if you connect a display that does not offer any higher resolution in its EDID data - it cannot be selected manually. No idea if it could be forced into 480i the same way.

Thanks for clarifying! In this case a small EDID minder in the HDMI path might help.

Once set to 480p, do the above mentioned titles really support 480p 4:3 output?
