Mayflash NS woes for using arcade sticks on Switch

Post by mikehaggar »

Hey all,

So I have a few older modded TE sticks for the 360 (they were modded with MC Cthulus back in the day to support RJ45 cables to all retro systems as well as 360 and PS3). I want to now use one of these with my Nintendo Switch as I'd hate to buy another stick if I can avoid it.

After reading some reviews online, I decided to try the Mayflash NS, which claims it can allow you to use most controllers on your switch.

I received it yesterday, and for the last few hours I've been trying everything to get it to work, but it doesn't recognize either arcade stick I try. (I'm using RJ45 to USB, same way I would connect the stick to a 360 or PC).

Any suggestions for anybody in a similar situation? Is a different converter better? Should I suck it up and just buy ANOTHER arcade stick?

Can you simply replace the board to a switch friendly one? Like one of the newer Universal ones?
I've had success with a Hori PS4 stick and the Magic NS on the switch. I'm assuming you tried both Switch controller modes? (Red and purple LED?)

I tried every single color, not just those two (red and purple).

I'm not very tech savvy, back in the day I just paid somebody to mod one of these for me. Replacing the insides seems like it would be difficult?

Here is a picture of the inside to see what I currently have in case it gives anybody any ideas...

I'm not super familiar with a lot of the encoders and what not. (Most I have done is replace the buttons and give a stick a custom paint job)But that one in there looks like it may be an older revision of something similar to this

Maybe someone more familiar can chime in.

Given how difficult it is to get a Brook Universal Fighting Board into the OG version of the Mad Catz Arcade Tournament Edition, I'd honestly get get an all-new stick and call it a day. More info here:

If you had a TE2 it would be a lot easier:

Also keep in mind that Hori is going to start selling their new Fight Stick Alpha next month, so might as well get one of those.

If less clutter is your priority, and you don't mind spending a whole weekend planning this all out, consider gutting one of your Mad Catz TE cases for a Brook Universal Fighting Board. That would replace every other PCB and you shouldn't have to solder anything unless you need PlayStation L3/R3/Touchpad. To keep retro functionality, consider the Brook Retro Board which you can stack like this guy did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob2Nr43SW1o Seems a little confusing at first glance even for me, but you shouldn't have to solder anything.

Might also want to get PCB feet for mounting:

Door replacement for more buttons:

And of course your stick harness:

Since you won't be using the original TE turbo panel, might as well get a new plexi cover with the following specs:
Plexiglass Thickness .125" (3mm, 1/8" thick)
Cut Turbo/Contro Panel? No

Hmm, after a little research, I stumbled onto this adapter.

https://paradisearcadeshop.com/products ... -converter

It specifically says on the page that the MC Cthulu is compatible! So this means, in theory, just running a USB cable from either of my sticks into this converter should work...

Does this seem reasonable? Has anybody tried this converter?

I've used that exact one. It does work as advertised. Most of the Brooks stuff is a little fussy at first but once you know how to connect it works fine. Go to the controller selection screen on Switch and use the adapter with your stick for the first setup. I think after the first time it will be quicker to recognize your stick but the first time took a bit of fiddling.

Wow, I forgot I even had that converter! Bought in June and just unboxed it right now. It works with my Toodles TE Kitty (a board specifically for Xbox 360 Mad Catz sticks and similar to MC Cthulhu in that it adds PS3 support), and it works. So good on Toodles for getting the auto-detect right. (EDIT: Doesn't seem to recognize Left and Right Trigger... hopefully that's just a TE Kitty thing :? )

But man, you really do have to go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication > On to get it to work! Had to read Amazon reviews to figure that one out.

It's a $40 converter, but it's worth trying out! I hope it doesn't add input lag. Not having to buy another stick or do any complicated modding is worth trying it out.

The Mayflash NS I first posted about has all of the same setup (with doing the wired pro controller enabling and all that), but it just does NOT recognize my stick no matter what I do.

I guess the Brook adapter has more compatibility.
