Streaming setup advise for Mac users

Post by mikehaggar »

Hi folks,

Does anybody have any solid recommendations for basic external streaming capture interfaces for a Nintendo Switch / HDMI using a Mac? I know bootcamp is an option, but my girlfriend wants to start streaming switch stuff and wants to avoid windows if possible...some suggestions would be great. She has a pretty nice Mac (quad core i7), so at least there's that.

I use the Elgato HD60 but it does seem to desync the audio from the video sometimes with certain sources. This is using their proprietary software for recording, with OBS and streaming it seems ok though

Specs for HD 60 seem like it requires a dedicated AMD or NVIDIA graphics card, she just has Intel HD integrated chip....so not sure if it will be able to handle it.

Cool, is this what you use? Got any examples of streaming you've done with it? Any issues you can think of or does it work pretty well?

The chinese amazon page/typos make me a little nervous lol

I normally use a Datapath on a Bootcamp'd Mac, but I have used this setup in OSX. Let me see if I can get some time this weekend to do some capture on it.

I did a quick recording using a fresh install of OBS. 1280x720, MP4, x264 encoder, using the Indistinguishable Quality preset.

this could use some easy brightness/contrast tweak

This is great, thank you for checking on this! Can I ask what the specs of your Mac are?

2015 MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, 2.8ghz Quad-Core I7. It can also do 1080p just as easily. Let me try and get some Switch footage for you.

1080p Switch capture, High Quality preset: https://youtu.be/8v3phlEh9S4

1080p Switch capture, Indistinguishable Quality preset: https://youtu.be/o8f2c_XTK6c (definitely chugging a bit here with high CPU)

Back on Windows in OBS, here are some captures:

Windows Puteltal 1080p Switch capture, Indistinguishable, x264 low CPU preset: https://youtu.be/BnEKyfrQAaU

Windows DataPath 1080p Switch capture, Indistinguishable, x264 low CPU preset: https://youtu.be/F1YTYqFSiF0

Definitely getting better framerate. Let me go back to Mac and see if the x264 low CPU preset is what's making the difference.

Holidays delays, sorry about that.

Thanks for all of these, I appreciate it!

Question: How is the HDMI passthrough on this device? Is there lag or is it a true lagfree passthrough in your opinion?

There’s lag. Not enough to tank Animal Crossing, but you wouldn’t want it with Cuphead.

Understood! I think she’s going to be streaming mostly non-timing sensitive games, so it probably won’t be a problem. Just in case though, do you know of a good or lag free HDMI splitter? I was going to create a separate thread for this anyway as I need one too, but asking just in case

I have an Extron DXP 8x4, but that’s overkill.

Here’s what I’ve used in the past:

IBIT 4x2 HDMI Matrix Switch Ultra... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071PFDWJK?re ... b_ap_share

About to pull the trigger on this, can I ask what the GPU on your mac is? She just has the standard Intel HD, wondering what your mac was running...I don't think you mentioned that part in your system specs.

I think it's the same caliber one (I don't remember choosing an upgrade): Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.
