SEGA Multi-Mega interference on screen due to power supply ?

Post by snk2 »

I have a Multi-Mega with a region switch installed. I'm using an RGB SCART cable connected to my OSSC. I also have an Everdive plugged in from which I'm playing the games. I'm getting interference on screen, and I'm trying to figure it out what's causing it.

Initially I thought that it was the RGB cable what's causing it, but now I'm pretty sure it's something else.

For reference: the RGB cable is made by me, I used an official XBOX 360 component cable to make it. I'm also using CSYNC for sync. I have the necessary caps and resistors in the SCART plug (75ohm resistors + 220uF capacitors on the R, G, B lines and 470ohm resistor + 220uF capacitor on the sync line). The XBOX 360 cable is well shielded, as I have also made PS2 and Original Xbox component cables from it and they have no interference present.

I have also made another RGB cable using Cat7 SFTP cable which is also well shielded, but the result was the same, so I ditched that because those SFTP cables are very rigid and hard to bend.

Now the power supply of my Multi-Mega is not the original one that comes with the system. Instead I'm using a Mega Drive 2 power supply, which had it's original connector cut down and had a connector for the Multi-Mega spliced in, presumably from some laptop PSU or something. I don't know how it was made, I did not make it myself, this is the way it was when I got the system.

So now I'm thinking, could this power supply be the cause of the interference? Or could it be something else, like maybe something faulty inside the console? I tried to connect the console to different power connectors in my house, and different displays (another TV and to a PVM monitor) and the interference is still there. I also noticed that the interference is different when I'm in the main menu of the Everdrive or if I'm in a game (I also tried with game cartridges and the interference is there with those too)

I have uploaded some pictures of the interference on my tv in the main menu of the Everdrive and from in-game in Castlevania The New Generation cartridge.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't help with too much of the technical stuff. But I'm pretty sure the SMD2 powersupply does not supply enough power. You might be better off with an after market power supply, with 9.5V/1.2a I think. I believe that is what I am using for my CDX (although physically located in another country)

I have been using this console with that power supply for more than 20 years without other issues. Could the psu have damaged something in the console?
