NES RGB-IGR installation issues

Post by Cooperd9 »

I have been trying to install a nes rgb kit with Voultar's in game reset board, but I'm having a few problems. I tested the nes rgb without the IGR board installed and it was working correctly, but after installing the IGR board I am having two problems. The IGR board keeps cycling through the various color pallets every second or so and the in game reset doesn't seem to be working. I'm not sure if I've wired this up correctly, I haven't been able to find much documentation to check. What I have been able to find is this one picture of an installation from Voultar on his twitter
(https://twitter.com/voultar/status/1086 ... 36?lang=en) and the github page for the IGR project (https://github.com/borti4938/NES_IGR_fo ... stallation), but that just has some pictures that aren't very clear. I am pretty sure I have most of the wires soldered to the same place as Voultar's picture, but I can't tell what the RO wire is connected to in that picture. I also soldered the 5v and 3.3v to the points labeled on the github page and I have used a multimeter to verify they are getting the correct voltage. I think it is either the resistor R5 or the capacitor C15 but I have tried both and had the same issues. Has anyone successfully installed one of these or does anyone know where to get cleared instructions?

Here is a picture of what I have so far.

Edit: I have done some further troubleshooting, the cycling palates seem to be caused by wiring on the reset circuit. When I disconnect the reset wires from the NES RGB IGR board the pallets stay where they are supposed to be unless I use controller inputs to change them. I suppose I will have to try to figure out what the github is trying to convey for setting up the reset wiring now.

edit 2: I figured it out myself. A working method to wire up the reset is to connect the RO wire (not RI as shown in Voultar's picture) to pin 4 of the power/reset connector on the motherboard, desolder the yellow wire from the power/reset board, and solder a wire from RI to the pad where the yellow wire was connected. Be careful and plan ahead for wire routing, the bottom rf shield will get in the way if you don't.

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I ran into this same issue. I installed an NESRGB-IGR board into my top loader, but it would just repeatedly cycle through the color palettes. Also of note, it only did this when a controller was plugged in.

I was able to fix this by replacing the .47uf capacitor located at C11, just to the right of the reset button on the NES main board. Just wanted to offer this as a possible solution for anybody encountering the same issue in the future.
