Sony PVM-20M2U Broken Sync?

Post by zFleeman »

Hi, shmups. I'm kind of having a panic attack right now, and I really need some advice on how to fix my Sony PVM-20M2U.

I was working on my MiSTer FPGA setup -- trying to attach my MiSTer's I/O Board's fan to a 3.3v pin in order to reduce the fan noise. Well, I think I connected the fan's cable to the wrong spot, because the display started to slowly dim. After trying to turn the MiSTer and TV on and off again, the display started to scramble and screw up. I was outputting video to the display via a VGA cable with external sync, an RGB cable.

Now, at first, I thought I broke my I/O board, but connecting different devices to the RGB/Component ports and the SVideo port, it became apparent that I overloaded (or whatever) something in my PVM. I at one point hit a 5v pin with a wire that was connected to the VGA power's 3.3v pin. I think that's what did it. I uploaded a video of what I'm seeing with every input. I've played on this display for maybe a total of ten hours with the MiSTer after buying it via this group.

What could have gone wrong, and how can I fix this? I'm devastated that I may have permanently damaged this amazing display. I'm hoping it's just a capacitor I can replace, but I'm horrified that it's much worse.

My main concern is that I won't be able to find the damage. Besides a bulging capacitor, what else could I look for? Also, could the damage be directly on the input board?

I also shared this on the PVM/BVM Facebook group. I'm sharing here hoping to get some second opinions. https://www.facebook.com/groups/4438761 ... 743460423/
