Best output resolution for hdmi consoles

Post by wildchild22 »

I am wondering if there is a list for the best output resolution to set for these hdmi consoles. I see some consoles are native internal 720p for most games and then upscale to 1080p. I am looking to use my extron dsc 301 hd to upscale to 1080p for my plasma and wondering what others use.
I have listed the hdmi consoles I have and the resolutions I suspect is best to set them to. If anyone thinks 720p or 1080p is better suited then I listed please comment.
xbox 360 720p?
xbox one 1080p?
ps3 720p?
ps4 1080p?
wii-u 1080p?
switch 1080p?

I'd say go with whichever looks best to you. Play a game or two that you know well on each of those consoles with the console set to 720p and then again with it set to 1080p and go with whichever seems to look better. If you've got a capture setup, you could compare recordings and figure it out that way.

I have no capture devices presently sadly. The difference is very small or non existent with my eyes between 720p and 1080p on my plasma. Just seeing what others use.

It depends on the game.

Most games on 360 and PS3 are 720p but quite a few are still 900p or 1080p. Wii U is the same. Most games are 720p but a few like Smash are 1080p.

For the Xbox 360 generation your life really gets a lot simpler if you just leave them all at 1080p and let the console do the scaling.

It's going to vary so much game by game that you will really have to find a sort of default that looks the way you like.

A lot of those 720p games aren't actually 720p, but rather close resolutions. Look at this list to see some examples: https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/list ... ons.41152/

If the games are not 720p, setting the console resolution to 720p would be introducing another scaling pass (1120x630>1280x720>1920x1080, vs just 1120x630>1920x1080).

I wouldn't want to mess with adjusting console resolution per game just for a slightly different scaling algorithm.

So IMO, leave all consoles at 1080p.

Yeah I am looking for a set and forget so I will just use 1080p for all hdmi consoles. I will use the extron dsc 301hd for 480p to 1080p scaling.

The Xbox 360 and Wii U scale internally if you set them to output at 1080p, but I don't think the PS3 does. At least with mine it switches to 720p when that's the output resolution that a game uses, so if the HDMI input on the DSC 301 HD is free you could connect the PS3 to it and see if its 720p->1080p scaling looks better than leaving it up to your TV. Though I'm not sure if the DSC 301 HD still adds the one frame of latency when it receives a 1080p signal that it doesn't have to scale, that's the only potential drawback.

The extron does add a frame of lag no matter what. As it has no passthrough mode.

Set your 360 to 720p. Almost no games run higher than that anyway, and the internal scaling is a bit soft. On some (all?) models of the 360 you will also get screen tearing in a number of games when they scale to 1080p. I remember quite a few Capcom games doing this.

PS3 is the same, almost no 1080p games, but the system will change output resolution on a per title basis, so you can just leave it at 1080p.

The scaling on the Switch is poor, but I would still leave it at 1080p most of the time, for games rendering above 720p. The good thing about this system is that you can change the output resolution on the fly, so when you play a game that renders in 720p you don't even need to reboot the game when changing resolution. Try playing Octopath Traveller (or the demo) in 720p, it looks MUCH better than 1080p.

Perfect thanks for this.

Semi-related question. For the gen vii consoles, which are better output via analog component over HDMI?

None? I don't think the analog over digital argument could be made when there aren't any games on those platforms that rely on a composite video encoder for blurring and transparency side-effects.
