I was wondering if anyone has ever done a pad hack with one of these controllers ?

Yeah I did that some years ago. Super easy, just remove all components and wire up the buttons and ground to the DB15 connector.

Yes it was the same one
You can remove the IC and then solder to those pads. That makes for a very clean and easy install.
EDIT: Actually please clarify if you're planning to use this pad on another system like a Supergun or you wish to install it inside an Arcade Stick. If you want the latter then you shouldn't remove the IC of course
EDIT 2: Also I did NOT use one of those controllers, I used an official Sega one. But it should work just the same. Sorry I'm apparently very confused today

Just an update on this , the pcb in those pads is perfect for modding.
They are common ground and its very easy to solder onto the solder pads for each button.
