This has been asked again and again. The general consensus is that most here would rather play the original games on their original systems. RetroPi is subpar emulation, a grey area as far as legality, and doesn't officially run effectively on the RPi4.

For gaming purposes I would rather pick up a used PC so you can play Windows games too, plus any Windows only emulators. Obviously how cost effective that is is very dependent on your circumstances.

Yes, people here would rather play on their 1000$+ setups than on something that costs less than 100$.

This isn't a RetroPie support forum. Given the pirate liabilities and the overall grey area associated with this software, you should go to their website and forums (which are extensive) and find information there.

I have a pie 4 4GB with retrotink ultimate and laka..works well..on RGB and components and a CRT.
Retro RGB round up today has news of a new VGA666 with components that you might want to look into it since retrotink ultimate has been discounted.

There are Retropie unofficial build for HDMI setup - I don’t recommend that route..

Look into a MiSTer before you get a Pi. Depending on what you want, it might suit you better.

I still rock my pi 3 running recalbox and I think the emulation is pretty good for what I play.

For my set up I use a cheap hdmi to vga, then a vga to scart cable then to my crt, works great for me,no screen tearing.

Emulators aren't illegal (and not much of a grey area, otherwise Nintendo and Sony would drown emulator developers in legal costs) and other format shifting devices (flash cartridges, FPGAs, ODEs) are frequently discussed here. Emulators are frequently discussed here even.

If you think that places this forum at legal risk, you should take it up with the forum administration, not just bring it up in random threads.

You should probably mention the price (since I'm assuming anyone considering a Pi is very much on a budget).

Seems to be 140$ + shipping + a RAM module is recommended (another 20$-ish?).

I actually thought it was more expensive. Now I sort of want one too.

Reasoning aside, OP would most definitely be better off probing for help setting up RPie in a dedicated resource for it.

Don't be glib, nobody is saying emulators are illegal. The fact that he asked about it here means he's inexperienced with emulation, and he never mentioned homebrews or ports. Unless he knows either how to implement those into a standalone system or what that even means, this is for pirated ROMs. I didn't think that would need explanation, but here I am.

Thanks all.

And grey-area ?
I think the most people here play on MAME, do you really think they all have 100 PCBs ?
Some games are only on MAME, just take a look in the posts who plays.

Is there a 25 year limited on the copyrights ?
If so there are many many games legal already.
And you are saying you dont copy anything illegal yourself ? ( those who talk about the grey area ), i dont believe it.

Most of what you said is nonsense, but take a look here for US copyright info:
https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-duration.html

And I should apologize, the words "piracy" and "pirate" are nowhere to be seen in the Shmups Forum Rules. However, the first rule is "You're legally responsible for anything you post here.", so that's on you if you want to discuss. And Emulation is specifically stated as safe conversation. To further confuse you; under "Not for Discussion" you'll see copyright infringement. So unless you own that original game cartridge, I wouldn't play its ROM.

I thought I was on XDA for a second, where you even mention grey software you get banned...

Regardless, It's already stated that this software isn't yet fully supported on the Pi4. If you really want the answer, check the below link. Keep in mind that their rules are more stringent than Shmups.

And you can not wait for M2 to release everything for modern console.
They release 1 game per year, means you have to buy a PS5, maybe a PS6 by that time.
I just cant wait and need the raspi sooner or later.
