Best FV310 240p Solution

Post by Wigz81 »

I’m currently looking for a decent 240p solution for my CRTs. I have an extron crosspoint that I’ll be using for switching. I’ll list my consoles and what mods they have for compatibility. The idea is that I want everything running over YPbPr component. The added expense of scart and finding Pvm/BVM displays doesn’t really interest me. The Super Emotia has already been recommended to me. I also have an extron Rxi 203 RGB interface that I picked up with the crosspoint. I believe I read that I can use that with a VSC unit to convert 480i to 240p. That method is far more financially pleasing than coughing up the funds for an emotia unit. If it’s possible that is. Any recommendations or help would be appreciated.

Consoles and displays I currently have:

Nintendo AV Famicom w/ NESrgb
Nintendo SNES JR w/ Voultar RGB
Nintendo N64 w/ Voultar RGB
Nintendo Wii
Sega Genesis 2
Sega Saturn (JP)
Sega Dreamcast
Sony PS
Sony PS2
PC Engine w/ SuperSDSystem
RPI 3B+ w/ Retrotink Ultimate

Sony KV-27F120 (extra 4:3 display)
Sony KV-27FV320 (Tate display)
Sony KV-36FV310 (Main display)
Sony KV-40XBR800 (4:3 HD Yuck)
Sony KV-34XBR970 (for PS2 Mostly)

All consoles with the exception of Dreamcast are running over component cables.

So for my dreams of 240p goodness can I run it console>crosspoint>VSC>rXI>CRT?
What is the best way to wire everything up for easy switching?

Thanks in advance for the help. Mainly trying to avoid paying for an emotia and the corio2 units prices are also getting high where as this method would only cost me an extra $25.

Your sources do all output 15khz already. For which sources did you anticipate a 480p to 240p solution?

Im still learning the ropes a bit. For a consumer set such as my FV310 with a console outputting 240p will my tv display it as 240p or will it be converted to 480i?

I believe im looking more for deinterlacing than downscaling. Its easier to find info as it applies to pvms not to unmodded consumer sets.

Your FV310 displays 240p just fine. For a proper conversion to 240p you need 480p sources. You got that if you equip your DC with a VGA box (which you can then run into an Emotia or something similar), but from a PS2 that's much more difficult since many titles only support 480i output. And after all 480i is what most of these titles were designed for. A conversion "down" to 240p isn't suited for each and every title and I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.

Yes, if the output is 240p then it will display as 240p on your FV sets. The only time you get 480i is when the output is 480i, which should only happen with DC/PS2/GC and Xbox games.

I wanted to do 480i to 240p too and never found an ideal way. Some Sony sets have a button that fakes it by displaying some text in the corner, but it's not really ideal either as the picture is not like a true 240p imo. Ultimately I found the best solution is to find a tv that displays 480i nicely and hopefully it will grow on you sufficiently (any late Sony FV should display 480i quite nicely I think). I personally would still pick 480i on a crt for those systems than 480p on an lcd.
