Magewell Pro Capture AIO - 240p

Post by TheDrifter363 »

Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask, I haven't been able to find much information about this capture card. How does it handle 240p sources? I know a lot of the old consoles have weird refresh rates, so I just wanted to check on this. Initially I was gonna go for the Datapath VisionRGB E1S, but this card has a newer chip by Analog Devices, the ADV7842. It's niiice. Lol. I'm gonna be using it for my VHS and Hi8 captures too, since it'll really benefit that. The AIO has a DVI and DB9 port, so it can do VGA, YPbPr, S Video, and Composite Video for the analog domain. Plus with that Scart to DVI adapter, it should with Scart too. It can take all sorts of sync. I think I read somewhere about the cards with DVI ports have the ability to do custom resolutions/timings. How's that? Anyone have any idea? I don't even need to know about this specific card, just the ones with a DVI port, instead of HDMI. Let me know, and thanks for hearing me out!

Depending on who you ask, Magewell's capture cards are the best in the land and will sync to just about anything out there, including damaged tapes and "dirty" SCART-style sync-on-composite without needing a sync stripper on models with analog support:

Speaking of tape, the only downside I can think of is that Magewell chose not to implement the 3D comb filter of the ADV7842. If you're using tape decks with S-video/component instead of CVBS composite, 3D comb filtering doesn't matter, which is probably part of Magewell's thought process there.

I did see mentioned some time back the DE9 analog inputs may be interlaced-only and not NES/SNES-friendly (needs de-jitter mod?), at least under Linux, with the DVI port's analog inputs being fine (which includes YPbPr). No idea if firmware updates have fixed this, but I would assume so.

Some damn fast 240p/480i switching though:

(That said, you can tell it to capture in 480i and clean up the capture in post to clean up mode switching frames)

Speaking of the ADV7842, if you want a bare board with a ADV7842 on it for playing with all it's features, there's a test board just for that:

Hehe dude you're awesome! Thanks! You might notice some of my posts, especially on that 480i/240p switching video! Lol. I was talking to the creator, asking about that colorbar sync dropout frame, and he didn't try to tweak it to see if there's a different screen for sync dropouts. It's very minor though, and not always noticeable. But this is me just saying thanks. Finally someone who has experience with this card! Lol.

Edit: I'm actually gonna take a look at everything you posted. I may have already seen some of them, considering I've been scouring google and videohelp for everything about this card, or hell my entire workflow! Good thing I discovered the ADV7842, seems like a miracle chip!
