Using MegaDrive pads on Master System

Post by DiegoPonga »

Hi there!

I have a modified GameGear so that Master System pads can be plugged in. I tried it and it works fine!

The thing is I also have a Joyzz, which is AMAZING. Having a lagless, wireless controller is a must for me... However, it does not work for my modified GameGear.

I surmise it is because of the signal, so I was wondering if there is any lagless adapter for it. Does anybody know anything on this?

Thank you very much!

The Genesis pad must be de-multiplexed. I recently made a Neo Geo to Genesis adapter (which does the opposite,) but it has a switch to toggle to Master System mode, which I presume just provides straight inputs as the Master System would be expecting.

If you are handy you can assemble the demux kit that Console5 offers, slap a DB9 cord on the end meant for the system and stick it in its own little enclosure.

Theres a good chance the GameGear controller port was not wired with 5v. Its only really used for rapidfire controllers.

Open up the gamegear and wire 5v to the correct pin and it should work fine.

I'd say he specifically said it has 5V...

Isn't there any adapter for Genesis/MD pads? So I can use one on Master System on some earlier consoles/micro-computers. For instance, if I recall correctly, ZX Spectrum used the same DSub-9 standard.

You probably already know this, but have you tried the Master System mode button combination? From the Joyzz page:-
https://krikzz.com/store/home/52-sega-g ... oller.html
"SMS controller mode: Hold for 3 sec. MODE+START+B. Required for some SMS games which is not compatible with genesis controllers.
All compatibility modes (combo 3 and 4) will resets to default after power cycle on receiver"

Yes I did! It does not work, unfortunately...

I think the problem is hardware related, not software related. That SMS mode you talk about is meant as a workaround for software when using MS games.

However, I believe the problem is hardware related, i.e., neither the SMS nor the GameGear are compatible with Genesis pads, even though they share the same D-Sub 9 port.

You gotta make it or get someone to make it for you.

Are those Neo2Sega adapters available for purchase?

My bad. I'm not familiar with the adapter you are using I thought it was a SMS one.

What you want is right here.

Really? Isn't there anything like an MD-to-SMS adapter?

You'll want SOP 74HC157 and 0805 resistors and capacitors to go along with this. Standard DB9 and DB15 connectors can be soldered right onto the board, but I went the fancy route and 3D printed my own enclosure, using spare ends cut from extension cables. If you don't want to assemble this yourself you could send me a PM I guess if I get enough requests to do a small batch.

I linked to this already a few posts back! You'll have to solder this together or get someone to assemble it for you. Get a DB9 female plug on a cord.

I'd also be interested in this adapter, my current preferred way of playing Genesis is a Hori Fighting Stick Multi (modded with a Seimitsu stick, but somewhat sloppily because there wasn't enough room for the mounting plate on the inside so I had to screw it on the outside) but I really like the idea of being able to use a NG stick for shmups.

Right then. Guess I'll make some, it'll be a few weeks for all the materials to come together.

Can the board in question handle the GameGear start button and route it to the Genesis one?

The Console5 board does provide start as an available button but it would have to be wired in on the Game Gear's side, M16 test point or C38/C30 depending on the asic version of the Game Gear:

Thanks a lot guys for your suggestions! I have to think about it, because my GameGear is currently having a Master System port, and this would require me to remove it and install a new one...
