Opinion on these JVC BVMs?

Post by 2mg »

Preface - long post with noobie questions.

I'll probably have to choose between these three:
JVC TM-H1950CG
JVC TM-H150CG
JVC TM-A140PN

TM-H models are essentially same, 150CG is 14', 1950CG is 19', without input cards they do up to S-video, 750 TVL.
A140PN 14' has no input card option, only up to S-video, and 320 TVL (can someone please explain TVL like I'm an idiot?).
If you need manuals, PM me, but they are online.

If anyone tried them, I'd like to know this:
1.) Is there any point in even considering A140PN?
2.) Are they rock-solid for 240p/288p?
2a.) Can they handle 480i?
2b.) Can they handle off-spec SD resolutions (200p)?
3.) Do they have de-comb filters and can it be toggled?
4.) PAL60 support?
5.) Can they handle the "PC-like consoles" ala C64 or Atari?
6.) Is 14' enough for comfortable gaming, or should I go for 19'?

BTW, if I get my hands on their IF-C01COMG RGB/Comp. input card (or clone), I need some clarification:
1.) What kind of sync is "Synchronized signal (HD/Cs, VD)" or "vertical, horizontal and complex synchronized signals" ?
2.) "G on Sync cannot be used with RGB input" - what does this mean/which consoles are affected?
3.) Is anyone making RGB/Comp. input card clones (sorry if illegal request)?

Lets go through the list.
Is there any point in even considering A140PN?
Yes, if you want as tiny 14" desktop sized CRT. I personally would love a monitor that sized.
Are they rock-solid for 240p/288p?
Yes, especially the H1950CG, I have a H1900SU and I love 750 TVL
Can they handle 480i?
Yes, 240p is just a clever 480i trick anyways.
Can they handle off-spec SD resolutions (200p)
To be completely honest, I've never tried such an offspec resolution, I dont think so unless I know more information.
Do they have de-comb filters and can it be toggled?
Yes, but it only matters if pushing composite. Maybe through service menu options but I don't think it can be toggled.
PAL60 support
No.
Can they handle the "PC-like consoles" ala C64 or Atari?
yes, only through composite, S-Video and RGB with correct adapters for RGB, which you will most likely have to build yourself.
Is 14' enough for comfortable gaming, or should I go for 19'?
It is comfortable, but go big or go home.
What kind of sync is "Synchronized signal (HD/Cs, VD)" or "vertical, horizontal and complex synchronized signals"
This is out of my realm of expertise, but it has to deal with inputs through SDI and HDSDI, I think this might help explain.

"G on Sync cannot be used with RGB input" - what does this mean/which consoles are affected?
Generally higher resolutions (480p+) benefit and for consoles like the PS2 its required for 480p output via RGB.
Is anyone making RGB/Comp. input card clones (sorry if illegal request)?
I don't think it is illegal, but cloning these cards are possible, just google "JVC Clone Card" when searching the model number of the card.

Hopefully these answer basic questions about PVMs
