Dreamcast VMU Battery Question...

Do you need the battery in the VMU to work to be able to save Dreamcast games, or is it just for the "handheld gaming" features of the VMU? There's a VMU batter FAQ on Gamefaqs, but I didn't find any answer to this question.

Just for the "handheld gaming" aspects. Without a battery it functions just fine as a memory card.
