Easy way to clean NES controller port corrosion?

Post by Brad251 »

I have some corrosion on the pins of my NES controller ports on the console. I was thinking about disconnecting the controller ports and soaking them in white vinegar for 10-20 minutes? Would this be safe? I also thought about getting some electrical contact cleaner, putting a few drops in the disconnected controller ports, letting it sit and then cleaning it off with isopropyl alcohol? Is this safe?

What method that doesn't involve soldering would you guys recommend?

I've been getting corrosion off of battery contacts with white vinegar. Works great.

I'm just concerned that the white vinegar might affect the plastic on the consoles controller ports.

How bad is the corrosion? I would just put a dab into the sockets and clean with a toothbrush or something. That way you can avoid the soak. I don't think that vinegar would affect the plastic, but if you mix the vinegar with water you should be fine.
