Adding Scanlines for PS2 3001 using Component Video out

Post by Invader_lex »

This a guide for a project I did recently to add scanlines to a ps2 if you don´t want to mess around with transcoders and adapter and you just want to use the Component inputs in your HDTV, it cost less than 10dlls if you buy the parts for a DIY Scanline Generator or 20dlls for a Chinese pre assembled one.

This mod will work for every game that can output 480p natively and every game that can be forced with GSM or Xploder to output 480p, The Guide is for a model 3001.

Theory

Reading the service manual, and studying how a Scanline generator works, it seems that to add scanlines the generator need to tap the RGBHV signals, the signals are not re routed or cut just tapped as seen in the diagram.

The Generator works using the sync signals to electronically send part of the RGB signals to earth, basically darkening half of the lines. (If you short all of the RGB signals to earth (0V) you get a dark screen)

If you just can tap the signals in a PS2 in theory you could add the darkened lines before the RGB signals enter the PS2 internal Video encoder.

According to the Block diagram of the Ps2 3001 the 5 analog signals originates in the GPU and are routed to the analog video Encoder.

If you put the SLG before the encoder the encoder will recieve a signal with scanlines and output a component signals to the AV multi Out.

Where to tap Signals:

RGB are near the the GPU you can solder 3 wires to the 3 resistors R244. R245 and R246

Sync signals can be tapped just before they enter the video encoder in the other side of the board

I used a pre assambled board and the 5v from the USB port for test

End result.

I assembled my own DIY SLG with fixed resistor instead of potentiometers to a scanline level that I like and drilled a hole in the back with a switch to turn on and off the SLG. The scanlines are darker in this application maybe because The 3 resistors R244. R245 and R246 are in parallel with the resistance of the SLG, I used 3 fixed 1kohms resistors, the SGL3000 use 250ohms pots, the Chinese Copy use 500ohms pots.
