Thanks! Any particular reason against the SCART? Or a suggestion as to an alternative? I'm primarily a Genesis/MD collector/player, and the Genesis/SCART cable seemed to be the most common choice for RGB setups
I prefer the VGA connector or BNCs for RGBS. Don't like plumbing in audio in the same plug. Also don't care for the physical characteristics of the scart connector

Ah, well actually I left the SCART audio unconnected inside the TV for two reasons, one is because I'm using the SegaCD base, and some people insist you get better audio directly from it rather than the pass-through to the Genesis' AV-out (though I'm not sure how true that is), and two, looking at the TV's schematic diagram, it looks like the RCA audio connectors are switch-jacks, so the audio channels get mixed to mono when there isn't a physical plug connected to force it to stereo. It should be fixable by cutting the trace between the channels, but eh, why bother if the first point is true.

As for VGA or BNCs, a cursory search didn't turn up any ready-made Genesis-out cables... but either way, the work's done and I'm not planning to re-do all now (though if you did have a product on-hand I wouldn't mind taking a look out of curiosity)

The service manual has a list of all capacitors (and all components for that matter, I believe it was ~120 electrolytic caps for the KV-32FS100 ), but I don't know which specifically will aide with geometry, sorry

That does merit asking though; to anyone who has re-capped their TV, how much did it help/affect your picture geometry? The service menu settings have helped worlds for mine, but I've still got a little warping the settings won't fix (in addition to convergence issues at the corners), so I too am considering that as the next step

There’s actually a pretty simple way to work out which caps to change for geometry.

Look for the horizontal and vertical ICs. They will have numbers like IC501 and IC601 (it will vary from set to set). Then look for electrolytic capacitors that start with the same number, e.g. C512, c604. They will be the ones to target.

Oh, and extract the list from a service manual. If the service manual is a scanned one you might have to use some free online OCR tools to get the data into a useable format.

So hunting though the diagrams, I found IC561, which I think is the vertical IC? It's labelled "V OUT" on the wiring diagram, and the part description is IC STV9379. Looking up a spec sheet, it's called a "Vertical Deflection Booster".

As for the horizontal IC... I've not had any luck there, so I put together a list of all ICs from the manual to try to search for it:

So while the (suspected) vertical IC is actually labelled "IC", I found a transistor (Q502) on the diagram labelled "H OUT", TRANSISTOR 2SD2645-YB. A google search turns up a datasheet says it has "color TV horizontal deflection output applications", so... I guess that's the horizontal IC? The thing is, all of the capacitors attached to it are surface/film types...

Just had a squiz at the service manual, I’d be looking at the electrolytic caps that start with C5. I normally prioritise the higher voltage ones.

Note that neither of the two caps on board GK ("C650" & "C1450") had voltages/tolerances in the service manual table, and I don't have my set open/apart right now to check them. Both caps are connected to a line labelled "AUDIO VCC", and the VCC/VCCL pins of IC1405 (which I couldn't find a datasheet for), so I think they're filter caps for this IC...? Don't think they'd be high voltage, but I could be wrong.

Yes. It acts as a part of a voltage divider with a 75 ohm resistor that is in the TV set to drop 5V down to 1.5V for RGB Fast Switching/blanking (on factory scart sets anyway)

Yes. Scart standard is Composite Video as Sync. We inject csync or luma because its either what we have or because we might get cleaner images.

This would depend on the console. That seems like it would be attenuating 5Vp-p sync to 1Vp-p suitable for a TV. 5Vp-p is also know as TTL sync - Transistor to Transistor Logic levels are 5Vp-p. TV's want less than 1Vp-p (usually 0.3Vp-p) sync so needs resistors. Once again the resistor works with a 75 Ohm resistor in the TV to make a voltage divider.
Had another question related to this line of questioning. I found this website selling SCART cables, and they have cables that use the CSYNC signal from the MultiAV out pin 3. It sounds like this is a better(cleaner) option, but had a question. When using this cable, can I still patch into the yellow composite input on the back of the TV for sync, or do I now need to use a input that patches into the S-Video input?

Sorry still new to this and trying to learn. Is retrogamingcables a good site to buy these from?

I picked up a Toshiba 32" CF32F50 a few weeks ago, that I want to try the RGB mod out on. Had no luck finding the service manual, but found the old SAMS Photofact at the library. May see me post again on here within the next few weeks as I try to figure out how to try this out. Thanks again! :)

Hey all, I followed the Ba-4 guide for my kv-27s42. Verified everything in the TV was connected right by firing up before starting the mod. After the mod, when I switched it in (with the blanking switch in neutral so there shouldn't have been any issues with blanking at least), the set seemed to cycle a few times in 5 seconds then went dead. Now I get no standby light and nothing at all when it's plugged in and turned on. Doesn't seem to be any fried components. I also don't think it's the fuse since multimeter tells me it's only got a few ohms resistance. Will replace it tonight just in case. I tested all my signal and sync wiring and got all the expected values. The only thing I can think of is maybe soldering of r086-088 was a little messy but it looks fine to me. Anyrhing that would prevent the TV from powering up like protective circuits for shorts or bad signal plugs plugged in? (I have sync going into a video). Any way to test other parts of the power supply?

In the service manual for your tv under Diagnostic Test Indicators it will list the fault's.

Yeah it basically says make sure it's plugged in and that the fuse isn't blow. I've checked the continuity of the fuse and the cord and it's fine. I also took a reading between 120 Vac in and ground and it says 7M ohms. Is that typical or should it say OL?


Edit - e board varistor reading is 2m ohms, is that ok?

Update - fuse and varistor are ok (varistor matches drawing R reading). I saw one bit of solder splatter on the back and removed it, but that didn't clear the fault. I think IC521 might be turning the set off because it is sensing the wrong voltage. Connector CN601 brings high voltage successfully from the E to the hot part of the A board, but the other connector CN604 doesn't seem to be bringing 7.5v standby. When the hot pink is measured against A board ground, I get 0 volts. I guess this means there is still a short somewhere still? There is still either splatter I somehow overlooked, or I somehow got into another trace when removing the resistors for the mod. Any thoughts of other troubleshooting steps?

Hey guys, my TV is the FV300 featured in this thread primarily.

I moved it from downstairs to upstairs and hooked it up to my PC that's using CRT_Emudriver and I'm getting a picture with a sync issue all of the sudden:

This is the same PC that was displaying the pictures in this thread (punisher, metal slug, etc). Since I tested this TV, that pC went into an arcade cabinet, and i had to change the settings of CRT_EMUDRIVER to the settings for a Wells Gardner K7000. I have since gone back and attempted to re-set the settings thinking that might be the problem, but it didn't help. ANy suggestions?

Any update on using pin 16 from the scart head as the blanking signal?

Guys, I managed to make the RGB mod with a Sony Trinitron KV29T75, different chassis presented here on the forum. But I noticed that the image is still not good, there is interference, I believe it is the VGA cable, because I use a PC on the TV. Has anyone ever experienced this? I have no idea how to solve it.

If we assume that the blanking from Scart is 5V through a 180R (this is the way it is on many scart cables)

So the BA5D puts 5V through a 1KR, then a diode, then 3K3R to ground

(5 - 0.7) * 3300/(3300+1000) = 3.3V

So we will target getting 3.3V from pin 16 (looks like some scart switches aren't going to work)

So the voltage divider...

3.3 / 5 = x / (x + 180) = 350Ohm.

Let's say 360 ohm because that's the nearest standard resistor size

(360 / (360 + 180) ) * 5 = 3.33V

Ok, so that's going to be our termination resistor for pin 16

The existing R012 and R1087 are 3300 ohm. 3000 + 360 will be close enough to that....

For BA-5D

Remove R012

Add a 360 ohm termination resistor to Pin 16 then send it to the leg of D008 closest to jungle via a 3000 ohm resistor.


For BA-5

Remove R1087

Add a 360 ohm termination resistor to Pin 16 then send it to the leg of D1012 closest to jungle via a 3000 ohm resistor.

Hey, thanks for this wonderfull guide, i just need a little help with my tv, the chassis says its a BA-5 but the pics dont look anything like mine, so i was wondering if someone would be so kind to help me decide what do i need to to mod this huge stone heavy tv, thanks for any help.

It's not up to others to work out how to mod your TV. We've laid out plenty of instructions here, learn the concepts and apply them.

I'd be checking out that PIP port...

Hi everyone, I am really very interested in making mods to crts, I just made a mod to my Sony KV-21FV12 / 5 TV with BA-5 chassis, the way I made this mod was to lift the legs upwards and there solder the rgb cables with a resistance of 75 ohms to ground with 0.1mf capacitors and solder rgb cables to the holes where the jungle twigs were. All these cables that come from the jungle and the Micon connect them to a switch and from there to a scart, also to the switch I added the 5 volts and blanking to activate the rgb and deactivate it. I used a vga connector because the scart has not yet reached me. I see that everyone does this mod only for consoles and my question is why they don't try arcade games, jamma pcb's. I did it to test with arcade games and the contrast and colors are very high with the 75 ohm resistors grounded, I had to use lower resistors to make the video more attenuated. Although in some games the vertical frequency is unstable since the image goes from top to bottom and I cannot control it with the service menu. Someone has a similar or experienced problem with arcade games.
I still don't use this mod for consoles and I don't know if resistances less than 75 ohms are going to affect the consoles signal.

The pinout is the same, my mistake.
The only thing is that I've tried soldering to D008 it's no good.
Using a 2k2 resistor but soldered to L304 and blanking works

I did just like last time. Isolate RGB out and RGB in pins. Isolat the video 5 Y Cb Cr pins amd use as an entry point for rgb.
There's gnd nearby just solder 3 75 ohms together and one leg to GND and the 3 to the Y Cb Cr pins.

I've also recapped the entire A board, geometry and convergence are spot on. Really nice to see this kind of perfection on such a huge tube.

I made an rgb mod with a trinitron with BA5 chassis and the image is really beautiful, but I am surprised with what I just saw in your mod, I see that you can access the osd menu and the video game is displayed, how did you do that? In mine I have to press the switch to swichear to the color menu and then to swichear again to return to the rgb of the game. in case your jungle chip has 2 rgb inputs? Or how did you manage to see the menu while the rgb of the game is active? Cheers
