Just got a Framemeister

Post by shmupsrocks »

I finally got an XRGB mini and it's working great. I updated the firmware to 2.03a and changed these settings:

OUTPUT_MODE DVI
DVI_OUTPUT 1600X1200
SYNC_MODE OFF
IMAGE_MODE PICTURE
SCANLINE ON
DEC_LINE1 70
DEC_LINE2 100
DEC_SMOOTH 80

My 4:3 Dell LCD has a 1600x1200 native res. I'm playing arcade PCBs. I optimized the monitor's settings and input lag seems reasonable at this point. Any suggestions for improvement?

The only issue I'm having is the image doesn't fill the screen. I have black bars on the left and right. I've tested with Gunbird 2 and Strikers 3. I'm not sure how this is happening since the 240 line source is an integer away from 1200.

Unfortunately, while the Framemeister supports 1600x1200 output, it can only scale up to 1080 lines. If you try to go beyond that it just gets cut off. I have mine set to output 1280x960, and my monitor does a pretty good job of scaling from there.

That's really too bad. It will be nice to have an OSSC too at some point.

I wonder why mine isn't cut off though...?

EDIT: Are you on 2.03a? If not, maybe scaling to 1080 is the new behavior when resolution is set higher than 1080, instead of scaling all the way up and cutting it off?

Yes, 2.03a. As far as I've been able to figure out, there's no way to have it fill all 1200 lines for a proper 5x240p integer upscale; it just letterboxes 1080 lines of picture in a 1200-line frame.

Ah ok I thought you were saying that your image would be cut off if you tried to output at a res above 1080p.

So we aren't even getting integer scaling with a Framemeister. :(

The Framemeister has internal 4:2:2 processing, so integer horizontal scaling wouldn't make much of a difference.

And yes, you have a limitation in resolution to 1080 active lines. If you're using 1200p output (either in 16:10 or 4:3) you get a massive underscan area around your image.

The custom scaling settings are pretty powerful though, so you can do pretty much whatever you want WITHIN the above limitations. On your 4:3 UXGA display you're most likely best off with going for a 4x integer scale on the vertical using a 1280x960p output to your display. This way you avoid massive underscan and you can probably get rather good scanlines.

1280x960 looks good, thank you.

I tried Kyukyoku Tiger 2 on the F3 and unfortunately the image shakes about once per second. I tried changing SYNC_MODE and SYNC_LEVEL but they didn't help. Any idea how to fix this? Do I need a sync stripper?
