Composite / S-video to RGB with DVD Recorder
Composite / S-video to RGB with DVD Recorder
I am looking for a cheap way to convert 240p composite video to RGB for use with the OSSC. It has been suggested to use a DVD Recorder but most of them will probably output 480i.
Does anyone know if there are DVD Recorders which will output 240p?

The OSSC has no HDMI inputs though.parodius wrote:How cheap ?

Yes, a HDMI to VGA converter is needed, read through the article I've linked to.

He needs to buy this:
http://www.retrotink.com/#Products
And this:
https://www.videogameperfection.com/pro ... a-adapter/
If he lives in the USA he can buy all of these together at the same time here: https://castlemaniagames.com/shop?keywo ... hip-083118 However they are sold-out on CastleMania Games.
If he is in Europe, VideoGamePerfection only has a pre-order list up, which can be found here: https://www.videogameperfection.com/ret ... erve-list/
Aside from these, if he doesn't want to wait the only way to buy them right now where they are available and in stock is directly through retrotink.com

The RetroTink 2x costs 5x the price of a used DVD recorder and the video quality is quite soft and noisy. https://youtu.be/mdUlcIR1yh4
If I can use a cheap 20 euro DVD recorder that would be a nice solution.

Re: Composite / S-video to RGB with DVD Recorder
Unless you have pretty extensive processing onboard, your chances are good that the Scart output is just a decoded passthrough of the inputs. I remember a friend buying a defective Pioneer for 1 EUR on ebay and it was fine (except for the broken disc drive). If you stick to the machines that don't offer HDMI and/or upscaling, you should be in luck.
Re: Composite / S-video to RGB with DVD Recorder
I have two legacy DVD recorders (a RCA DRC8335 and a Panasonic DMR-ES10) with no digital outputs and they both add significant input lag. I'm talking about the kind of lag you don't even bother testing. It's the kind of lag that makes you yell curse words and laugh out loud. It's ridiculous. It feels like forever between presses and reaction on screen.
I think the RCA outputs 240p and the Panny always does 480i. Great comb filters for video, useless for video games. Avoid those two.
Please post any model names that do the job properly.

Re: Composite / S-video to RGB with DVD Recorder
I would avoid any device that uses the LSI Logic DiMeNsion chipset, which would rule out quite a few mid-00s JVC DVD recorders. I have a JVC D-VHS deck that uses the same chipset and the lag is pretty bad (unplayable) when I tried to use it as a composite/s-video to component decoder (it also outputs all video to MPEG2 via firewire last I tested). All output was 480i as well.
I have a Retrotink-2x on order. I'll have to test its image quality out with the XRGB2+ I still have hanging around when combined with the OSSC.

I, for one, don't wish to play the electronics lottery until I find a unit that doesn't add lag and doesn't screw with 240p. I could very well end up spending OSSC money before finding a unit that works the way I'd need it to.paulb_nl wrote:The RetroTink 2x costs 5x the price of a used DVD recorder and the video quality is quite soft and noisy. https://youtu.be/mdUlcIR1yh4

I'd much rather spend the ~$100 for the RT2X knowing up front that it properly supports 240p, and can just pass that and 480i along to my OSSC, and can be used in isolation if I need it to. As a bonus, it can be powered from USB, and would save significant space over both my 1U RGB decoder and any used DVD recorder I might come across, which I'd never use for DVD playback, because I have multiple consoles that can do that already. (I'd still probably need a VCR to decode RF consoles, if I ever get one.)

A kit from Japan that changes composite to RGB. V2 here doesn't allow for S-video, but if you can locate V1 used anywhere, that one does.
