Need help with PS2 c-sync mod

Post by thebigcheese »

I've been trying to swap my PS2 to c-sync as per citrus3000psi's c-sync mod (http://www.dansprojects.com/ps2sync.html), but I'm having trouble with it. I was chatting with him over Twitter, but I hate to take up all his time so I'm posting here in the hopes that the collective minds of all of us can figure this out. My PS2 is an SCPH-30001 R system with a GH-015 motherboard. Naturally, this is not one of the images featured on the mod page, so I dug up the service manual (bottom of this page https://www.retromodwiki.com/wiki/PS2) and traced out what was going on. I've wired it up per this image:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/fFGlTEPg5GZkcjlg2. I've verified that all the connections are good and that I did actually connect to the right places per the image. In my chatting with citrus he also verified that those are the right connections to be making. However, the image I am getting looks like this: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qHcPzqhVhESLZvCx2.

Images of my install are here https://photos.app.goo.gl/dCENXuH59Lyky1Za2 and here https://photos.app.goo.gl/v1fpV319PcQU21kN2. In the second photo, I ran out of wire and didn't have any more wire that thin, so yes, I just extended it, but it is solid. I've also checked all the other connections at least 5 times with a multimeter and verified that they are connected correctly. Just out of curiosity, I also tried disconnecting the wire that disables SOG and that made no difference.

Anyone got any ideas?

in your first install picture, the SOG disable one, remove that wire and just link the pads that it connects to, it goes to ground. That wire can actually pickup AC interference really easily, and its sitting right next to where the AC input wire hooks into the board.

As for the point your grabbing csync from, id avoid that, its a direct connection to the GS and if your set draws on it well, its not a good idea.

Grab sync from the pad below, the ones labelled Hsync Vsync Cync on the schematics.

Here's some pics of where I grabbed H V and C sync for my mod. I did run them thru a buffer.
I just copied the Dreamcast cables buffer and it works fine, strong TTL sync.

Really you should be fine to wire directly to the pad without a buffer. I only did that because I run directly to a VGA monitor.
Without the buffer the sync voltage is too low for proper TTL. Wobbly image ect.
Citrus' mods were made with the other PS2 models in mind and those cannot grab sync from after the last DAC because you remove it to disable SOG.
Besides for the loud fan, you got the best model PS2 for this mod.
A nice jumper pad to disable SOG and a cysnc pad AFTER the DAC that should put out enough voltage for low sync levels.

Oh dang, I didn't realize the pad right next to it was ground. Okay, it's now a much shorter jumper to ground, though there is no change in the picture.

In regards to the sync, I was just following the info in the original mod. I would prefer not to have to make a buffer as I don't have all the components for it. I believe the intention was to grab it after it leaves the GPU but before it gets to the encoder since the encoder (I presume) is what tells it to use SOG when it switches to 480p. So, in any case, I have grabbed it off the same location as in the mod instructions, which should at least work since it has worked for others. I do appear to have sync in that I get a stable picture, anyway. I have now tried moving it to grab sync off the pad you are using (just without the buffer) and I'm still getting the same results. Beginning to think I may have messed something up somewhere else inadvertently :(

Update: Put everything back to stock and I'm still getting the weird colors. Which means the mod work was fine, I just messed something else up. I remember that I bumped CP201 with the iron while trying to get the c-sync wire on that tiny via above it, but I checked for continuity and it seemed fine. That's the only thing I can think of that I could've messed up, so I will use the hot air rework to properly reflow solder there and see if that helps. Any other ideas?
