Viletim N64RGB + UltraHDMI installed - video noise on N64RGB

Post by RetroModern »

New beginner modder here and looking for some advice. Just installed viletim's current N64RGB universal board on vdc-nus chip, hooked up cs# to pin 3 "S" (didn't cut trace for composite video sync on pin 9 "V"). This is being output to a PVM 20M2MDU via snes scart (csync) cable from retroaccess to monitor. Used my own 30awg wire instead of the supplied ribbon cable.

I also installed the Ultra HDMI kit which works perfectly (after some newb mistakes on the flex cable). No issues at all.

The issue I have is that the video image on the N64RGB side to the PVM has some noise especially on backgrounds. Color seems mostly right other than this issue. I'm testing Mario Kart 64 and I see shadows/artifacting(?) in the intro/splash screen clouds and sky. Same during the blue sky in Luigi's Raceway. It looks like purple streaks around clouds. Haven't tested many games as it was getting late and wanted to call it a day.

My question is if the sync choice of not cutting the trace on pin 9 is affecting it? Or should I use CS75 to pin 3? I'm fairly sure my 30awg wire is under 30cm but could be shortened if necessary. I have double grounds from rgb board (one to pin 6 on multiout; one to wire loop to heat sink screw).

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

This morning, Bob mentioned in his weekly podcast a flex-cable adapter that borti has been working on that incorporates resistors that help clear up visual noise when you have both an N64RGB (both his and Tim's) and an UltraHDMI installed. I haven't seen anything on these forums about it, but here's a small amount of information and a handful of photos borti posted on Twitter:

There really isn't much different between installing the resistors on the board or closer to the N64.
I just cut the spare pads on Tims board and put the resistors there and it cleans it up.

The pad for clk is actually the big bottom one. I cut the top one but it goes nowhere.
