16x1 HDMI Switch by Tesla Smart

Post by The Rook »

Has anyone tried this:

http://www.tesla-smart.com/page593?product_id=196

16x1 HDMI Switch by Tesla Smart. They are a Chinese company and it looks like they are selling these on Alibaba.com.

I contacted them via chat on their website and was told the unit cost $120. I'm considering purchasing one. I'm looking to hook up 9 (or 10) retro systems via HDMI. I've seen 8x1 switching for around $100 from Monoprice but anything over 8 inputs is significantly more expensive.

If anyone has any experience with this please let me know.

I currently have an 8x2 iScan Duo chained to a 8x1 Shinybow and have been looking for an affordable 16x1 switcher. If you get it, I'm very interested in learning how it works out!

Yes, it is. It's quite pricey new. I was able to get a perfectly good used one on eBay for $50 shipped.

Amazon has it listed for $700: https://www.amazon.com/Shinybow-SB-5608 ... B002S8EI2I

Is the switching capability pretty good on your iScan Duo? I'm in the market for an 8x2 and thinking it might be worth it to spring for the duo with its functions as a bonus.

I'm currently using one of these
https://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-8-Port-Sw ... B005S0YNNM

I should probably just get a splitter for the dual output but the duo is tempting as a possible partner for the OSSC.

You got a heck of a deal on the Shinybow. I'm envious! Was that quite awhile ago? I've been trying to look out for 8+ switches but they tend to get posted with bad names quite a bit. Makes finding the listings difficult.

Bargain price, it looks like its 4k capabilities are limited to 30hz so not great choice for e.g a 4K capable gaming PC but still, 16 ports for £115.81 seems almost too good to be true.

One thing I did notice browsing images of it, there's a bunch of vents in one side that look suspiciously like they might be for a little fan, which would mean this wasn't a quiet switch.

Yes, as a switch, it is quite good. It supports both manual and automatic switching. I've only recently started using the automatic switching, but it has been convenient. The other side of the Duo is that it is a full-blown video processor. Whereas the Shinybow isn't touching the video signal, the Duo does. For some people, this is advantageous - some have had success pairing the Duo with the OSSC to increase compatibility with their TV.

It was in the fall. By chance, when I started looking for one, I saw that a listing had ended on eBay without a buyer. I mailed the seller and he relisted it for me. I picked up the remote from ANI-AV later and both have worked well. I finally got both switches setup a couple of weekends ago. Combined with a W-Hydra, I've got 32 systems and 5 scalers/processors going into my LCD. 8)

This doesn't specifically apply to your consideration of this one unit. But after spending several hundred dollars on a dozen or so hdmi components in attempts to bend my setup to my will. I just have to say that I wouldn't put too much faith into any one part to make such a big purchase. Each piece always has one or two bad interactions that makes HDMI a giant pain.

At this point I'm writing off HDMI as voodoo practices. You can research all you want but at the end of the day you won't know until you hook it up and cross your fingers.

Usually it's EDID that causes issues in switching setups, this can be cured by popping a Dr HDMI on the output of your HDMI switch, and/or on any device that stubbornly refuses to output the correct resolution/audio settings (PS4 and Windows seem the worst for this).

In 4k it's exponentially more complex since these same tools and tricks don't always exist yet afik.

My Analogue NT is finicky with my Samsung TV. I typically have to unplug the HDMI cable from the NT and plug it back in to get the signal to work. I does not display the same issue when plugged into my Sony TV in the living room. It's the only system that causes me problems like this. If I get this switch and it's still doing that maybe I'll look into these Dr. HDMI.

My Super NT doesn’t work when plugged into the viewhd 3x1 switcher I use to get the OSSC switched in without dropping signal occasionally. I found that if plug the super NT into a different switcher (specifically an awakelion 5x1) first. Then chain that to the viewhd 3x1 then everything works fine.

Might be worth trying running your analogue NT through a couple different switchers first.

Off the subject question - has anyone tried Dr. HDMI on a PS4 --->HDFURY2 to BVM? And got video?

I just got a DVDO iScan Duo video processor and that issue I was having with my Analogue NT is no more. No need to unplug and plug back in the HDMI cable. Everything works smoothly now.

And since I was finally able to get the iScan Duo I won't be trying this Tesla Smart switch anytime soon.

I've been using https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01HIPVY8G/

So far it's worked OK with everything but the HDMI N64 which needed a Dr HDMI adding to it before it worked.

There's no support for 4k though so I've had to use a separate smaller switch for that (which has problems of its own.. sigh!).
