Adding rumble motor to SCPH-1180 Sony Dual Analog

Did anybody here do this? I have a spare Dual Shock, would be a fun way to get the rare, elusive Japanese SCPH-1150 :D

But... I've read that the rumble motor was removed from the US/EU variants not because of the usual reasons (ignorant westerners not deserving of proper Japanese technology), but because the rumble circuitry in the Dual Analog caused fuses in the PS1s to blow up. I guess there might've been some fault in the design and it drew too much current. Might just be an urban legend.

I know it's a longshot, but I wonder if anybody here actually knows and / or investigated this. Very curious.
