trouble booting cd based games on a ps2

It's modded with a messiah 2. Lately it's had problems, it doesn't load Rez and the music often cuts out in Virtua fighter 4.

this is NOT a knock against big, it was working when he sent it, and for a good while after.

On REZ it doesn't give me a 'disc read error' or anything of that nature, just loads eternally.

got REZ working again...I think it's a problem of me not knowing how to use it rather than a problem with the system (i.e. there's something special you have to do for psone games).

No offense, but some older model PS2s have problems with booting cd based disc. It appears this isn't the same problem, but do keep in mind that CDs not working isn't an uncommon occurance when it comes to PS2s.
