Guh, I loathe threads like these cause they make me go look at my systems and look, a 75001 and a 79001. Have they ever had issues with real discs OR burned backups? No. But my damn lizard brain is whispering 'they might not be the best revisions....'

I likely won't go buy a replacement cause I've never been a min/maxer, but it is still grating. Now if there were differences like 2chip vs 1chip picture quality, or analog/digital rgb conversion N64s, that'd be one thing.

How do TEST PS2s fit into this? Can we expect similar behavior from models with roughly-matching model numbers?

I have a DTL-H30301; would that roughly match my SCPH-39001 in terms of performance/reliability?

I don't think it will work with Component. Pretty sure it only outputs RGsB be default. My console is modded with CSYNC out, so I was able to do RGBS. To revert you'd need to remember how to get back to the settings and change it blindly. (Shouldn't be too hard). Or go into recovery mode with the matrix chip.

BTW, it does poor job. It is just skipping every other line. Its not worth the time. 480i looks much better.

Sony resolved most IOP issues by the time of the 79xxx series. It's only really the 75xxx that's a little more problematic.

I'd easily go with the 79001 over any earlier Slim. The earlier ones seemingly had a ribbon cable (attached to the laser mech) that would eventually bend and make a circular gouge in discs. The orientation of the cable was changed and the problem seems to be fixed in the later slims, at least as of last time I researched it a couple of years ago.

Have you actually tried it? It may not be listed for your monitor, but it may be able to display it anyway. I have a 1280x1024 flat panel that can display 960i.

And you don't need a matrix chip to do 960i, 960p, etc. Older versions of GSM have it available

What are the upsides of getting a V8 over a V7? And how can you tell what is a V8 from a V7? I have found contradicting info online, like someone saying that a V8 is basically a GH-022 Motherboard + B100 Bios, but other website class a GH-019 + B90 as being a V8.

This is what someone posted on another forum:

A v7 will have motherboard legend GH17, or GH 18 or GH 19 or GH 22 and markings on the BIOS in the range B70 through B90.

The v8 will be model 39000 or 39006, GH 022 and BIOS marking B100.

"00" is the region code for Japan and "06" is the region code for South-East Asia.

For NTSC U/C it's "01" and for PAL it's "02", "03" and "04".

Again not sure if this is true as I found contradicting infos online.

So what constitutes a "V8"? And do NTSC U/C V8s exist?

Fat ps2 for sure. The hard drive is a definite bonus, plus I tend to find the fat PS2's to be more readily available, not to mention cheaper.
