Sony Trinitron convergence

Post by Elbaid »

Just picked up this 29 inch (27 actual?) Sony Trinitron Sony kv-29ls30u and it has convergence and focus issues which get worse towards the edges. I should be able to adjust the focus easily enough, but is the convergence more trouble than it's worth? It is really bad, even the middle is unacceptable, but the edges are the worst of any CRT I've owned.
I've never played around inside a tv and it would obviously need to be turned on. The picture seems otherwise amazing with a nice flat screen and good geometry for a flat 29 inch so seems a shame to discard it.
Anyone with experience of successfully adjusting Trinitron convergence?

Thanks

Can't offer a bunch of help, but here are some tabs I've had open for a long time on general CRT calibration. I still haven't tried fixing the convergence on my set yet.

And here's a guide for arcade CRTs forwarded to me by Chad from Arcadecup:

As far as I know you can only fix this internally. Just eyeing your tv it does look a little worse than what the average set has. That being said even some of the best Trinitron's come out of the box and be in need of a bit of correcting to get an ideal image. Once corrected as far as I know you won't have to do it again so it's definitely worth trying to get some help to calibrate it. You might be able to fix it by doing a combination of using the couple convergence knobs on the deflection board, nudging the yoke around a bit and using Permalloy strips (takes a lot of practice to use correctly but can help tremendously in the corners, sometimes even for the geometry as well as convergence).

If all else fails and it's really off (which honestly doesn't seem to be the case here) the last solution is the rings on the yoke, but I've never had to do that so I wouldn't be able to advise. Either way I wouldn't even attempt any of this unless you have a friend nearby who is experienced with doing this as you'd be dealing with some very dangerous high voltage areas.

Thanks for your replies.

I've no doubt it requires some internal fiddling which does terrify me slightly, but im sure it's fixable. Just not sure I want to risk a fatal shock over a £25 TV. I'll ask around to see if I can find someone with experience. The screen is fantastic and it even syncs to mortal kombat's odd mode line which many consumer sets struggle with.

Those links should come in handy. Cheers

This is just horizontal static convergence and there should be an adjustment on the neck board.

Yeah I've seen that, almost makes it look easy...

I've removed the rear casing and can see the rings. Still not 100% I dare putting my hands anywhere near them.

Is the internal box stuck to the back of the case a subwoofer? I'm wondering if I can remove all the speakers as they add serious bulk to this TV and I use headphones anyway. I'd like to make custom housing to reduce the overall size. I know this is a change in scope from just improving convergence, but it is a massive TV

I guess you have to find the service manual for your tv to see how to reach the speakers.

Some advice above is either pointless or misleading. The convergence on an arcade monitor or a smaller Sony set is done differently. Download this and you'll find the correct procedure:
