Sanwa PFX monitor 15khz compatibility issues (possible fix?)

Post by Alien Soldier »

I was wondering if any of you tech experts found a way to play old Toaplan/Taito boards on your Sanwa PFX tri sync monitor? A lot of stuff works great on these monitors but when it comes to Taito/Toaplan PCBs, it the other way around which is a shame, really.

Here's my experience so far

Refuse to work no matter what (black screen):
- Toaplan Fire Shark / Same Same Same
- Toaplan Outzone
- Toaplan Truxton / Tatsujin
- Taito Bubble Bobble

Work:
- Toaplan Dogyuun (picture is wavy on the left of the screen though, ruins the monitor after a while, sync cleaner doesn't change anything)
- Toaplan Fixeight
- Taito Twin Cobra
- Taito Sky Shark
- Any Raizing/Cave/Seibu/Psikyo/Namco/NeoGeo/CPS1/CPS2 games I've tried.

Games that won't work properly without a sync cleaner
- Taito F3
- Taito Gunlock PCB version

What makes the RGB signal of those boards so different that the Sanwa PFX refuses to handle it and just go with a black screen? Is it the resolution, the weird sync signal or the RGB voltage? Any input would be appreciated.

If you have experienced a black screen on your Sanwa PFX, please let me know which game it was and I'll update the comptatibility list.

I just found this article:

It looks like some guy in the comment section was in the exact same boat as me. That article is 2 years old now... I wonder if someone ended up using that sync stabilizer on a PFX...

No experience myself, bit similar issues with a WeiYa C3129A chassis.

Everything works perfectly except NeoGeo MVS.
Fix was to make VGA cable with the H/V sync combined just for the MVS.

For all other board I feed Csync to the Hsync of the chassis.

After years of searching for the perfect solution for my twin PFX monitors, I can say that Martin Jones' sync pulse generator is the fix you're looking for. It's the only way I can play many pcb's on these monitors, they're super picky about sync timing. Build one you won't regret it.

Hi,

Has anyone else built this circuit. I am having issues with the layout/design. Thanks

For sync related issues, a sync strike plus and Extron RGB interface solves any issues I've had.

I have two tri-sync monitors and both work well for any PCB I have tried. Getting no image at all is usually a wrong sync type issue for me. Sources that sync on composite video or sync on green don't work so well with arcade monitors unless you use a sync strike and an Extron interface.

Sync timing issues usually manifest as a rolling image and can sometime be an h hold issue. I have never had that issue with any of my arcade monitors. Only CRT tvs that need a refresh close to 60hz.
