Shmups with VGA support on Dreamcast

Post by parodius »

Hi,

Somebody made a list of the shooters available for DC on the Trizeal thread :

Border down
psyvaria 2
mars matrix
ikaruga
shiki gami no shiro 2
zero gunner 2
chaos field
bangai o
giga wing
giga wing 2
Gunbird 2
twinkle star

I only own Gunbird 2 right now, and don't have a VGA box/cable, but I'd be interested in knowing which ones in the previous list support VGA ?

Is there a web site that lists all the games providing VGA output ?

And last but not least : I know that the DC-X boot disc can force 15Khz RGB output for games that don't do it natively, is there one that can force VGA ?

Thanks !

Gunbird 2 doesn't support VGA, but if your VGA box has a TV/VGA switch you can trick the game by booting it up in TV mode and then switch it back to VGA and play it on a monitor.

It looks great and is in true low-res, but the downside is it has minor graphical glitches when you play it in VGA. The Zeppelins in the sky stage's shadows are possitioned incorectly and the game intro isn't perfect.

Slowdown like a bitch at some points, too. Lots of places where it's normally non-existent.

The accuracy of this FAQ is questionnable though : it says Gunbird 2 is VGA compatible. And it obviously isn't : you guys mentionned it, and there's no VGA label on the back insert... so it makes me wonder about the rest of the list.

So, to your knowledge there's no other option than the VGA box's switch trick to force a game in VGA mode ? No boot CD does that ?

Don't even bother trying to play Gunbird 2 in VGA. The slowdown and graphics glitches completely ruin the gameplay.

Bangai-O doesn't work in VGA, either. The rest of the games in your list are okay, but I'm not sure about Twinkle Star Sprites.

Indeed. I forgot about that. I haven't played my DC through VGA for a while.

If I Rember correctly,

You're thinking of the US version of GigaWing 1. Gunbird 2 is the only reason I even bothered to get a RGB adapter for my DC.

I just tested this out, Gigawing will not play at 15khz rgb, but will play at 31.5khz/VGA rgb. Strange...it just keeps rebooting if I try at 15khz.

So I have confirmed that all of these will play in VGA except for Gunbird 2 (slowdown issues) and Bangai-O (strange screen issues).

if a game is vga compatible, does that mean itll also work at 15khz (or whatever most arcade monitors use)? ive been planning on putting a dc in my cab and havent thought about this aspect.

Only the PAL version of Gigawing supports 15kHz RGB.

It's independent, though the vast majority of games support both. I will confirm that all the games mentioned in this thread are 15kHz RGB supported, besides US and JP Gigawing.

And does the PAL Gigawing have a 60Hz mode ? Or does it run 60Hz on an NTSC console ?

parodius - Yes, it has the option for either 50 or 60hz at startup.
