PVM-2950Q - Skewed Geometry
So I picked up a PVM-2950Q a while back for an absolute steal from a guy who bought a warehouse and it happened to be in there, turned on the monitor and the display menu came up so I bought it. I hadn't had cables to test it out until today, and now that I have the geometry is all... warpy. The edges are all different, even after messing with the tilt options. It's usable, it's just not perfect, and not as nice as the 20" I was planning on getting rid of if this one worked right. Are these like arcade monitors, can I just shotgun or replace specific caps and have everything back to being A-OK, or is there something else I should look into first, or, or, or...?

Post a picture so we know if you're being OCD or not.

Definitely not the OCD type. The top is skewed too, but I'd moved the image up so at least one edge was correct, haha. Tried my best to capture it.

It doesn't look bad at all from what I can see. I think you need to put a test grid on it so we can see better what's going on. An easy way is to the 240p test suite from this forum, or to put the file for something like this on a PS3 or Xbox 360:

If it's just the edges you're worried about, you'll never get them perfect. This is analog technology controlled partially by magnets. Best you can do is just overscan the image by 2 or 3% on each side.

Unfortunately it doesn't overscan horizontally. It's definitely much more warped on the right side than anywhere, but I've pushed most of that off the screen, haha. It's just very much not the same as my 20", which almost perfectly squares up with the edges.BazookaBen wrote:It doesn't look bad at all from what I can see. I don't think I have the means of getting that image to the screen, unfortunately. Outside of the SCART -> BNC adapter I use with the SFC/FC I don't think I've got anything that will even connect. I've got a VGA->BNC adapter but I've yet to get soft15khz to work on the PC.
And a quick Google shows SFC compatibility for the test suite, but I don't have a flash cart for that, only for the Famicom.

Yeah, I do see the right side is warped noticeably at the top. Some monitors have the ability to tweak that via the service menu. Not sure about yours though. If it's older, there may be an internal pot that can adjust that too.
Definitely try and find the service manual online and see what you can learn from that.
Also, you should go ahead and pick up some RCA>BNC adapters. They're super cheap, and they make it really easy to hook up consoles with component video.

The internal pots are how everything is adjusted on my 20".BazookaBen wrote:Yeah, I do see the right side is warped significantly at the top. A quick Google says I need the remote to hit the service menu on the 29". Looks like I'll hit up eBay tonight and order both that and some RCA -> BNC adapters and return to this in a week or so.
Thanks so much for all the help so far!
Still nothing to hook it up to to show the disc versions, but thank you.mickcris wrote:there are a few disc versions also

I have the same monitor and have the same issues that you are having. Mine are more at the bottom-right, but really similar. I've considered getting an ISF calibrator to do it, but don't want to spend that money if the issue is caps.
Any Sony remote should work to get into the service menu. I use a modern LCD remote and it works fine. Display-5-VolUp-Power in fairly quick sequence.
Let me know how you make out...I'm very curious to hear your results.

As noonan said, any Sony remote will work any Sony TV, they haven't changed their remote codes probably ever. My consumer Trinitron works my brand new LCD and vice-versa.

I'll see if I can find one on Craigslist or something. I don't have any other Sony displays, unfortunately.

You must have a universal somewhere or an A/V Receiver or Cable/Satellite remote where you can program the display....

Don't have Cable service, and the only other televisions in the house have their LG and Dell remotes, the receiver has an Onkyo remote..noonan2678 wrote:You must have a universal somewhere or an A/V Receiver or Cable/Satellite remote where you can program the display....

Re: PVM-2950Q - Skewed Geometry
Has anyone been able to save service menu adjustments with an alternate or universal Sony remote?
IE an alternate button that produces the same IR code as button "12"
To save, you need to press the button "muting" or mute followed by the button "12"
The only button really needed for anything important that's not typically on most Sony remotes is a "12" button.
Sony offers no remote codes for it:
https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-re ... 950Q&LOC=3
This site claims to have the IR codes for the RM-854
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/co ... 0q/page-2/:
Their IR code for "12" is only instance google will find on all of the internet for that IR code.
