okay, it works, plugged ps1 composite into green rca. Sync locked i get picture, flipped on off sync stripper toggle still get video. so caps seems to work fine. fault is in my n64 cable most likely.

not sure do i use wrong input for my scart plug (RGBS that on the corner big spikes) Connected now ps1 with scart rgb, no sync without stripper.

There are 2 separate video sync inputs (called SOG inputs) on the chip.
One is used for RGBS, the other is for the RCA inputs.
The RGBS input is usually what gives people issues, since the sync signal is so varied (just think of the need for the additional 100 Ohm resistor).
The RCA SOG input on the other hand is trouble free. All sync carrying video signals need to be within small tolerances, or else there'd be severe video quality issues.

This means that on the GBS, we can use the green RCA input to verify whether a source will work under good conditions.
If that test passes, and RGBS does not work, then the issue is surely with the sync signal, specifically how it might differ from the RCA test signal.
If the RCA test fails however (and the source is not a PAL Nintendo ><), then there is some bigger issue with the source that needs investigating.

For PAL Nintendo machines specifically, it might be necessary to add one 75 Ohm resistor to ground in the cable or the console AV port.
On SNES at least, this is true for Composite Video and Luma (part of S-Video). I think it's the same on N64. No idea about Gamecube or Wii though.
You could try adding 75 Ohm to ground to your 100 Ohm to ground for a quick check (or use one 39 Ohm resistor).

At least it's somewhat documented these days. Just a few years ago, barely anyone knew what was going on with these machines :p

Note: The 75 Ohms to ground shown in those diagrams are in addition to the 75 Ohm that should be in the TV / GBS in our case.

so long story short. if sync catches on green of gbs via composite sync, problem is at output of console, fixing that should work via RGBS header without sync stripper. I am correct ?

If a signal works on RCA but not as Sync for RGBS, it means the Sync input path is different from the RCA input path.
It just tells you that your 100 Ohm to ground resistor is probably missing, or is too high of a value (then change to 75 Ohm).

The test is better to at least see that the console and cable (Sync source) work at all.
It's at least something, when via RGBS you only stare at a black screen, wondering what could be wrong.
If you know that your RGB cable uses that same Sync source you just tested, then the error is not the console, but probably the GBS Sync input.
I'm sorry, I can't explain it any better. It's intuitive to me, but try to explain all that stuff :p

All the business about the console end is only for PAL Nintendo hardware, with their weird in-cable resistors.
You've got to replicate that resistor if it's not already in a console mod. (The value is 75 Ohm to ground for the consoles I listed.)

now i get it thanks rama. yeah i got 100ohm resistor from sync to ground. will try to change it.

okay changed from rgbs pinout to RGBHV ? i think near VGA input (was it bad idea) added 75ohm resitor instead of 100ohm (maybe was bad idea)
now it works without sync stripper, riped it out finaly. But in bios ps1 is quite stable.
n64 works too but shakes a little.
Launched grind session on ps1 i get sync loses and

I'm not sure what you mean by "changed pinout" but I understand that going from 100 Ohm to 75 Ohm made it work.
If so, there is still something fishy going on. Maybe the new capacitors aren't correct.

Such borderline working signals will also confuse the auto SOG level routine.
You can override it by sending 'wsog 4' or 'wsog 1'. (I'm using low levels here, since it looks like your signal is still too hot.)

added 100ohm resistor again. works fine now. from time to time screen shifts like few milimeters up and down. (visualy) but it works now. Most likely was something with my sync stripper before. Cause when i removed it and revired and added 75ohm resistor i havent tested it with 100. So tl;dr everything is fine now, except that slight up/down shifting issue
Edit: i lose normal sync looks like when upscaler chip gets too hot. Otherwise now tested sh1. 240p -> 480i transition without loosing sync perfect
Edit2. Nope not a hot chip. Just restarting psx it hangs on sd hd sd hd. Otherwise fine. Thanks rama !

EDIT3: so found out whats going on. ps one (pal) starts and gets recognizet as ntsc 60hz. When game boots from disc it hangs to black screen, i have to switch resolution, wait and switch back to lets say 1024. Then i get picture and everything seems fine, it gets recognized as pal 50hz.

Hm, sure is odd.
It obviously sees the sync signal now. The rest is fully automatic and there should be no issue with 50 / 60 Hz switches.
Could you repeat the PSX startup where it fails to go to PAL mode? Have logging enabled and post the entire log please (best in a spoiler again ;p).

I'd like to see the entire log, including startup of the scaler (where it prints the options).

The new update enables "VGA modes" over Component now :)

I'm not sure what the PS2 is supposed to do when YPbPr is enabled but a VGA mode is selected.
Whatever it is, gbscontrol can now decode and display it.

It works by interpreting the signals as RGB (bottom level clamp), and then masking the sync pulse that rides on the Luma line.
Configuring the clamps for RGB is easy, but the ADC samples the sync pulse and that needs to be masked, or it would confuse the display.
The masking is a little trick: I simply enable the picture in picture function and have the "PiP" sit over the bad sync pulse :)

So yeah, you can now use every conceivable PS2 display mode with just the regular Component cables.
OpenPS2Loader supports patching games to 640x480 up to 1280x1024, which works well and looks great!

(One note: The 640x480 VGA mode and regular EDTV 480p@60 look identical to the scaler, so it can't be automatically treated correctly. Choose EDTV 480p instead, or use VGA 640x480 @ 70Hz or higher.)

Brilliant as always Rama!:)

Did I read earlier that the cfw might be able to output component, as in ypbpr? I probably misread or misunderstood....

bios on ntsc 60 shows but wobbles up and down (image i mean)

when game boots i get black screen

i have sent last comand y (720p)
then i got image on screen

Edit: On ps1 phat it works as it should bios is on PAL 50hz. Only slime gives me wrong. With phat one there are no problems at all.

Okay, I think I found the problem.
Try this option and reset the scaler:

Also, please fetch the latest version and upload that. There are a few sync related improvements in it :)

Soo. Looks like if i dont change anything via scart it works. Once i start to change something sync starts to act strange. Thinking that capacitors from china could be wrong. Will buy few here localy.

Another question. Does digital scanlines only work for 240p ?

It really depends on what you change, in combination with the permanent options, such as auto loading custom presets.
It helps to sometimes wipe the ESP8266 flash from options and saved presets by choosing to overwrite all flash and WiFi settings on an upload.

The caps could be wrong. I wouldn't know without seeing / measuring them.
If it works and is stable when you don't change any options, then I'd assume they're good though.

And yep, scanlines are only available in 240p mode. I use the deinterlacer engine to show a FIFO line buffer content every 2nd line, which is empty normally.
In 480i mode, the deinterlacer engine is put to work as intended, with the line buffer showing the previous field.
By the way, I really like the results of that now. No comparison to the OFW.
I can easily watch DVDs with it now and never notice it's a gaming upscaler :)

Without changing anything its fine.
Thanks.

hey rama, did you see my question earlier? It's probably a pipe dream, and I'm reading too much into something that was posted.

Read up on the Component Sync Level mod in post #1: viewtopic.php?p=1066995#p1066995

Once the resistor is correct for 1.0Vpp terminated, the Component out capability is just a bit to toggle.
Tell me if you want to do it, and I'll add some code to support it :)

Oh, and you'll need a VGA to 3 RCA cable or adapter.

Yes, very interested! :D If I read post #1 correctly, and if I wanted to permanently mod it for YPbPr output, I would simply replace R26 with a 430 ohm resistor?

Coincidentally, I have a VGA to 5 BNC cable from this very project, could use that with some BNC->RCA adapaters and leave 2 BNC's unused. Am I correct in assuming the pinout at the VGA connector would be the following?

1 - Pr
2 - Y
3 - Pb

Probably? I think all VGA <> RCA designs would put the 3 analog video signals onto the same pins.

Regarding the mod, the new output mode will require adjustments to the ADC and VDS and there'll be yet unknown problems.
In any case, it'll require work and I don't know how much yet.

I also can't make it detect the preferred output mode (ie: read the resistor :p), so I'll have to think of something for that.
So for now I was just asking to see if I'll have at least one other tester before I do the mod here myself ;p

Yes, count me in. Let me know how else I can help, beyond testing. As always, thank you for all your amazing work!

Possible to utilize the pushbuttons to toggle output modes? I'm sure that is a massive oversimplification of a very complex problem, but just spit balling here. :)

redcatex:
I added some power checks so gbscontrol now can detect and recover from the GBS board having no power (but the ESP8266 being on).
This may trigger on your setup, so try it out and see if things change :)

NoAffinity:
Okay, I'll get to it.
Making the output mode a user option is fine, I guess. I'd put it on the web ui though.

Hello Guys.

I new here although I have been visiting these forums for years and reading about very interesting topics, but so far I am encouragement to register.

Recently buy all necessary for run this CFW on my GBS8200 and all ok. But yesterday proof my setup and first my ESP8266 Wifi dont connect properly and loose the connection constantly so try several times (I read this situation is common). In one of this test I mistake connect the 3.3v from GBS to my ESP8266, I connected the 3.3 v in pin of ground and ground in pin for 3.3v. I got Scared for this situation and power off the GBS and reconnect all. And all working normally but now my ESP8266 dont broadcast the Wifi Network. I dont know if broken my ESP8266 but I need one form to test this situation. The Upscaler works fine but it looks incomplete Screen, cut the borders a little I want solve this but if no wifi connection I no may change the configuration. Please I need yours help.

In case of my ESP8266 is burned, Is there any form to change the configuration without WIFI?

Ryoandr:
I use the development branch when exploring new features with effect on the whole program structure, and where I don't yet know if I'll keep them.
It's basically my beta channel, and I delete it when I don't have anything in beta.
You're good if you follow the branch with the most recent commits ;)

NoAffinity:
Lol, it's just that I want to reuse what's already there. Also, the buttons need extra soldering work that surely only few people will do.

Shiver_169:
The WiFi issues only appear when a source is connected and the scaler is working on it.
To minimize this, just keep your source off and try to connect then.
GBS and ESP8266 have several reverse polarity protections, so I bet your devices are all fine.

Component out is available now, but don't expect good colors yet! ;p

On my PC TFT, it gets processed as sync on green. On my cheap LED TV, it's interpreted as YPbPr.
On the scope, it looks to be proper YPbPr (blue and red are hovering around 0Vpp).

Sweeet! And dangit, my 430ohm resistors dont show up til tuesday. Will test once I can wire in a 430ohm parallel switch.
