Does any store sell these already setup with the newest firmware? I would LOVE to try one out...but honestly don't have time (or the required energy) for a new project and learning how to do something else technical, program another device, etc. -- especially when I'm pretty happy with my OSSC, XRGB-mini, and DSC 301 HD setup I have going.

Well, but if you happen to be in the EU, I can build and send you a basic board.
With the other gear you have, you probably have all the cables and adapters already.

My board is 8220 v.3 that has orange pots and black buttons. I applied all rama's mod except ferrite bead mod and potiometers mod without success to eliminate random wavy interference from Playstation 2 system. It looks like this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8YYW_z3tBw. I just desolder 3 potentiometers today that almost eliminate wave interference (has some but barely noticable now).



I discover a trick to desolder 3 pins potentiometer easily. I use twiser and do moderate pull middle pin of pot and apply heat to the pin that can easily lift the pin up because pin metal is thin and easy to bend. After the middle pin left from hole it easy to desolder to 2 pins by bridge leads to heat both pins and life pots from PCB.

I can't see any issues in that video, but here's something you can try:
Change the SDRAM clock in the web ui > system tab.

I do offer them pre-built here in Brazil (with acryllic case). However they are not cheap (about US$ 120), since exchange rates and import taxes (up to 60%) make things really difficult. For those that speak portuguese, I have 3 videos on my YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/rigues) showing how I built mine (first with an Arduino, them with a WeMos).

Rama this is the first im seeing this advice. Ive got some mild waviness to the image that i havent been able to get rid of woth the various recommended mods that might affect it, quality cables all around. What do you recommend changing the sdram clock to?

Hi rama, I tried your ram clock freq changing. It works best @144MHz or @122MHz. I think wave is less now but I notice some faint random wave when I move my face near the screen. It does not clean as vga signal from VGA port of PC video card. However, it does not noticable distract while regular viewing. I am very very happy for your gbs-control. Project is very fun and I am exciting everytime when I mention your work to my gamer friends. Thank you.

I haven't figured it out fully yet but here's my theory on it:
There's one Vcc and one ground plane from which the entire SOC draws power from.
The SDRAM requires several digital pins to toggle at high speed, causing disturbances in the Vcc and ground planes.
These disturbances affect the analog stages in the ADC and the DAC.
So far this isn't unusual.
Highest quality board designs would decouple the analog and digital stages and use filters, but this isn't the case on a GBS board.

So now we have data transfers that happen in a "beat": image data on active video, no data on blanking.
If the beat happens to align unfavourably to the digital noise, a wave pattern develops.
(Otherwise, it would be just very faint noise in the image.)

The SDRAM clock change alters one of the frequencies, sometimes preventing the "beat" + digital noise buildup.
The digital noise becomes just random noise again, and can't be seen on the display anymore.

There are a few ways to minimize visible noise, and I constantly tweak them so that my test boards don't show it.
But random chance parameters can make it so that some of you guys get noise by default anyway.
Change your SDRAM clock and save a custom preset then.
A proper hardware fix would certainly require new PCB and lots more cost.

Edit:
With regards to what SDRAM clock is best, you need to find one that works for you.
All clocks are valid and don't overspec the SDRAM, as there's a div2 clock divider step in every preset.
The chosen clock needs to be fast enough so that the picture doesn't distort, but it can be too fast, and then lots of pixel errors show up.
Between 108 and 188Mhz seems to work best for me.
Don't forget to test this in an interlaced source mode, as that enables the deinterlacer, which needs more bandwith.
Chose a clock that doesn't develop waves (or minimizes them) and that has minimal general noise in the picture.

The price is unfortunate, but I can see lots of labor is involved. As long as it's still a good bit cheaper than alternatives, that's still good :)

Tom, it may not be related to your case, but I have found out that the power supply can introduce interference on the image. I have some cheap ones on my parts closet that make the image DANCE when used, looks like a raster effect. With good quality ones, the problem goes away. A ferrite choke on the cable, near the power input, greatly reduces the issue. Got some cheap ones on AliExpress a few months ago, around US$ 1 for 5 pieces: https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/32945880 ... b90a0WHTr2

I search ferrite choke around my home and found some. Picture looks a little bit more stable now. Thanks.

I agree with the power supply and ferrite tips. It's fairly often that I just twist my cables a little around the power input jack, and immediately the image changes.
(Time to clean the power connector and barrel then!)
Another good idea is to always try another power supply, just to see if it has an effect.
This is more relevant with 5V supplies than with higher voltage ones, probably because of the lower margins to Vmin of the input regulator.

Rama, about that wifi AP behavior, I also get that, GBS page is very slow to respond or doesn't at all. And very hard to connect while console is on.
Also I can't launch the connect to wifi page so I can't test how it behaves on a network.
Oh there an update, gonna test it ignore above for now.

Ok so, in AP mode, there are still a lot of problems while a console is on. The web page get unresponsive, and it also affects GBS behavior, like a preset change can take tens of seconds and can even make the monitor go in standby due to lack of signal.

When connected to home wifi, everything is smooth and responds immediately.

This is with the latest commit

On a side note, I tested this with 3 SFC and 2 cables (1 with composite as sync, 1 with luma as sync), and the behavior is the same whatever the combination is (so it's not NTSC subcarrier doing some things)

The EMI that causes this comes from the scaler SOC.
Whether it affects WiFi or not depends on the H-PLL locking onto the source at a specific frequency.
If that frequency happens to be in an unfortunate range, the SOC produces EMI that drowns out the weak WiFi antenna of the ESP8266 module.

The ESP8266 WiFi will then loose contact until:
- the H-PLL changes frequency (console switches video mode, console switches off)
- the WiFi channel is changed (avoiding the problematic EMI peak)
- the ESP8266 module / antenna is moved further away from the EMI source
- some other factor magically fixes it, usually only for a short while (WiFi is weird)

I'm trying out some ideas. Currently attempting to force a recalibration after a preset has loaded.
I know about the blocking by the way, but I'd rather try to fix WiFi in general than hack around it.

It's not, it works just fine here.
You need to make sure to work with a connected ESP8266.

Update:
Okay, I think I've tried every trick in the Espressif API reference. Nothing even hints at an improvement :/
So software fixes appear to be useless. It needs to be fixed in hardware.

You'll probably be able to connect just fine if you keep your source off, so the scaler doesn't do any work.
Another way to avoid issues is to change your router's WiFi channel.

I can confirm that with the source off I can access the control panel. Funny thing is, it works fine with older firmware (from march), on the same hardware, same source. I tried extending the antenna on the ESP8266 with a diode leg, but that did not solve the issue.

Other software versions may work or won't, it depends on what I set the sampling clock in that preset.
There will always be a range where it works on a given WiFi channel, and where the EMI will block reception.

I can only recommend moving the ESP8266 further away from the GBS at this point.
Antenna modifications can work, but require careful calibration. It's not a reliable solution.

Edit:
Maybe someone reading has more ideas.
Things I've tried and tested hint at the H-PLL / ADC sampling clock being the main (only) factor.
I've ruled out the 27Mhz main oscillator and its PLL derived clocks, including the display and memory clock.
The memory bus isn't the issue either, as even disabling it fully has no effect.
Yet a small change in the ADC sampling clock immediately brings back or chokes the WiFi.

Hi Rama,

I was wondering if it's possible to get a 240p/120Hz signal with black frame insertion for 240p source, instead of 480p. That would give a way better image on 30kHz CRTs :D

I have no idea if it's doable or not, I understand if it's impossible :oops:

Assume it may work, but you'll have to work on it yourself ;p

Oh I see! But I must admit I don't fully understand what are the registers you are talking about :oops:
Is that something I can change in your UI or directly in your code?

First page of this thread has a link to all the available documentation (on Google Drive).
The register definitions 1.1 PDF lists all the registers.

You can connect your ESP8266 to your computer via USB.
Open up a terminal (there is the Serial Monitor in the Arduino IDE), and now you can use my dev tools.
"t" toggles bits
"s" sets entire (8bit) registers
"g" reads out and displays register contents

t3t00t2 means "toggle segment 3, register 0, bit 2", which is "VDS_DFIELD_EN".
From there on it's flipping bits and watching what happens on your monitor.
If it's out of spec or otherwise unusuable, try "wvt x", where x is a line count number.
"wvt" programs all relevant vertical timing registers. "wvt 1000" sets 1000 lines, which is an x960 resolution.

can the esp8266 wifi channel be changed in AP mode ? Could it be enough to avoid interference ?
I had a bit of problems even while connected to network, my home AP was using channel 1 in auto mode, tried forcing channel 13, and seems ok now.

Wait, actually, it still happens, but only when I try 640x480 preset. The instant I press it it gets unresponsive, and if I press another preset and it manages to acknowledge (which is not always, or very slow), it gets fine and responsive again.

The AP mode channel is software selectable, yes. But this is just a band aid, as you've noticed.
Depending on the preset and many other factors, the problem comes and goes.
It would be a solution if channel hopping was a feature that APs and connected devices had.

I already explored software solutions. The problem needs to be solved physically.
Shielding, moving the ESP8266 away from the EMI source, these things work.
It means abandoning the ESP8266 plug on adapter method.

I understand that it's a band aid, still it's better working (in my case at least) with most of the presets so that's that.
By default ESP AP is in channel 6, where do you change channel, I would like to try a different channel for AP.

Hi Rama,

I am trying to use your custom firmware with a SNES but am just getting a black screen. The stock firmware works with my weird syncbaby snes to vga adapter but not with my hd retrovision cables. I have removed the C11 capacitor and added a 100 ohm resistor between sync and ground. I am using a wemos d1. I can see the web page at least!
