GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Have you tried using your snes and the scaler without the LM1881 circuit? I know some of my consoles work better without it, so I made it switchable. Might be worth a shot in your situation. Typical values for caps inline with RGB/S lines are 220uf, so that might also be worth a try.
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Been using this scaler a while recently and just wanted to point out a few problems I have encountered that I didn't see mentioned before:
1. Screen tearing ?!
It happens on only certain games and during particular transitions. Eg. Dead or Alive 2 , Soul Calibur 4, Half Life Decay all 60hz on NTSC PS2 with RGBS in. Sometimes is very noticeable and annoying too. I have not yet seen it happen with a shmup game.. I tried different resolutions on the scaler and that didn't help so I'm presuming its just struggling with the picture. I doubt its the games fault... Also worth noting I didn't see it happen even once if I use the component in.
2. Switching NTSC/PAL modes
Is frankly hellish sometimes and a lot of pressing Auto/Down button until it sync back to the signal and then the geometry is all wrong again etc.
If this CFW project can address those issues in a smart way it'd be great! Good luck with it and hopefully its ready soon

Hi Guys!
Is it possible to get the GBS-8200/8220 to sync on non standard frequencies, eg between 16-23KHz, for example MDA 18KHz?
Or is it only 15, 24 and 31KHz thats possible?
Thanks for reply!

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
240p stuff is perfect with this, wish there was a way to completely bypass the deinterlacer for 480i stuff though. Hope someone figures it out, that would make this scaler pretty much perfect for my needs, which is just to capture retro stuff since my capture card is HDMI only.
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Can anyone tell me if these are any good or not? I might be using one of these on a neo geo mvs. I've also heard there are fake ones on the market, is this true?
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Has any one tried the newer raspberry pi(quad core)? Are the pins the same? Is gbs control compatible with it?

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
I havnt tried any Pi but there is also the pi zero at $5 if you can get it. I'll try the digispark pro version first though.
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
I bit the bullet and bought the pi2. I'l keep you updated.
My setup consists of a gbs8200, a retrovga slg, a hdmi 720p vga scaler. My goal is to swap the HDMI scaler for one that doesn't scale. I want the gbs to do all the scaling. Also I ordered Helders component board, I want to component mod my dreamcast since nothing I have will take the 15khz vga signal.
**edit** I received the pi. Didn't include the 3.5mm av cable. Ordered. I am replacing the 720p hdmi scaler with the mini vga2hdmi. The white one that doesn't scale. All scaling will be done by the gbs.

Is there a way to use the gpio pins to act as the keyboard keys in the menu? I plan on building an upscaler box from an old DVR case and do not want to use a keyboard or wireless remote. I was thinking like up down, select and back.

Has anyone tried autodeinterlace against a game that switches all the time?
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Hi all, I'm trying this out and it is not working right I know it's something I'm doing.
First off I have a RPI 3 and im assuming that might be the issue.
I know it is sending commands because the screen changes in odd ways.
This is what I get when the menu button is hit.
[img=http://s19.postimg.org/p8hu61w5r/1458453781437.jpg]
Sometimes the screen is fully the color at the top with a line near the bottom..
Also the gbs seems really hot.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Hi,
I purchased a GBS-9820 and connected my PS2 over component cable, change settings to YPbPr in the PS2 OS.
But the image qualilty is really bad.
I have some images here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/yamca/alb ... 6874634112
I can not get a clean image from both my PS2 (component) and Dreamcast (vga box).
I will try raspberrypi CFW solution, but if I use this how I am going to hook my ps2 via component?
I read related topics in the forum but couldn't find a solution to improve image quality.
Thanks,

Hi all,
I tried this with my rp1 rev2. PAL dreamcast connected to vga with a vga box.
Everything connected correctly,
- GBS SDA to rpi 3
- GBS SLC to rpi 5
- GBS GRND to rpi 9
- JUMPER shorted on GBS
- installed cfw script on rpi
After I powered raspberry pi and GBS then load a setting from the list nothing happens. And on screen osd does not appear with F1.
Am I missing a configuration?

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
I dont think the cfw in its current iteration has profiles for vga and component input
you should still get the menu though so something isnt working

In my case, the only way to receive the menu was by holding CTRL + ALT + F1. After that, the menu should appear.

Hello. I'm considering buying one of these 8220's and while doing research I stumbled upon this topic.
Can anyone explain to me, as noob friendly as possible, what exactly this CFW solution is doing? Perhaps if someone has a video demonstration of this in action that would help me understand in much better detail.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi, i have some problems, how can i fix the vertical lines?
Im using Mega Drive 1 jap, scart cable and 680 resistor on sync.
Please see the video.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
so i decided to help a friend of mine out and put together something for up scaling his snes and ps1 and thought that you guys might enjoy the result.
the small strip board next to the gbs board holds a sync splitter, voltage regulator and a 328p running a variant of the code for the digispark mentioned earlier in this thread.
album
I made a mock up of the gbs board while designing the enclosure so if any one ever needs a cad file just look Here

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
So how i get YpBpR/Component input working on the OFW after trying the CFW?
It dosen't seem to get sync. The RGBS mode works still fine with both FW.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Am I in the right place?
I'm looking for an inexpensive method of line doubling my 240p RGB signals (Genesis, Saturn, SNES) so they can pass through my RetroVGA 2 scanline generator.
I already own the Audio Authority 9A60 to pass RGB/VGA to YPbPr on my HDTV.

This is certainly the right place if you are looking for something inexpensive. These boards should do the trick for simple upscaling.
On another note, does anyone have any info on being able to flash these boards instead of needing a Raspberry Pi?

Sorry for the double-post, but I also have to ask, how do you plug in component when the Raspberry Pi is connected? Or can you run the software without the Pi connected to Y?
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
why does everyone seem to use 2 pieces of wood (or plexiglass) supported by standoffs for the cover?
Plastic electronics project boxes can be had in almost any size at major electronics retailers and they dont cost much.
the added bonus is that they seal up and keep the dust off of everything.
I use them a lot.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Does anyone have pictures of their setup with I2C SDA, SCL & GND connected between the Pi and Port 5? I've only seen pictures with ti between Port 5 and 6. My GBS has no connections on Port 6, so I'm not sure how to go about it. Thanks!
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Project boxes can't be easily precisely customized by a CNC or laser cutter, and finding one of the exact size and shape required may be difficult. Furthermore, they are poorly ventilated (you would probably need a fan to put something like the OSSC in one) and are poorly suited to the task if you need to make more than one of anything.mvsfan wrote:why does everyone seem to use 2 pieces of wood (or plexiglass) supported by standoffs for the cover?

It looks like even when something sort of like that does get used (see the Engine Block AV version of the dbGrafx Booster) they need to be factory-customized to work for mass production, and even then it seems that it isn't really an ideal size (much thicker than the internals would seem to be).
