my US ps2 is experiencing problems

lately i have only been using it for dvd playing (with a bit of Shiki 2 for a mix), and i am having playback problems. during the movie the image will get a bit fuzzed, and then black out to the default "Video 1" display on my trinitron tv. the audio continues, no problem. i checked the cables and everything seems firmly planted, any ideas?

edit: i forgot to mention this has happened to me with several different dvds (underworld, constantine, shakespeare in love, and the list goes on).
